    The biology and behavior of the longhorned beetle, Dectes texanus on sunflower and soybean

    The biology and behavior of the longhorned beetle Dectes texanus LeConte (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) was studied on two host plants that suffer economic losses from this pest; sunflower, Helianthus annuus, and soybean, Glycines max. Reciprocal crosses of D. texanus collected from the two plants all produced viable progeny, indicating that conspecific insects attack both crops. Pupae from soybean stalks weighed about 40% less than those from sunflower, and adults fed on soybean lived a mean of 23 days, compared to a mean of 53 days (males) and 76 days (females) for those fed sunflower. A female's larval host plant had no effect on her tendency to ovipuncture plants of either type in a greenhouse trial. A field-tested population collected exclusively from sunflower contained three types of females in similar proportions: those that laid eggs only on sunflower, those that laid only on soybean, and those that laid equally on both host plants. Females in field trials fed more on the plant they had fed on in the laboratory, but soybean-fed females fed more on soybean than did sunflower-fed females. Females fed soybean also made more ovipunctures on soybean plants in field trials than sunflower-fed females, but their responses to sunflower plants were similar. Females displayed higher total ovipositional activity when they encountered sunflower first in the field, and lower total activity when they encountered soybean first. Feeding scores were significantly correlated with ovipunctures and eggs on both plant types. We conclude that sunflower is the preferred host plant, although females will accept soybean when it is the only available food. The results suggest that D. texanus is still in the initial stages of a host range expansion with female host selection behavior demonstrating both genetic influences and phenotypic flexibility. Sunflower represents a nutritionally superior, ancestral host plant and relatively high fitness costs are still associated with utilization of the novel host plant, soybean, costs that may be offset by benefits such as reduced intraspecific competition. These potential benefits and their consequent implications for D. texanus host range evolution are hypothesized and discussed

    Áreas potenciales para plantaciones de Agave angustifolia Haw en Guerrero, México

    Objective: To determine optimum and suboptimal areas for the establishment of plantations of Agave angustifolia Haw. in the state of Guerrero. Design/methodology/approach: A collection of 139 specimens of A. angustifolia was carried out, obtaining for each specimen phenotypic, agroclimatic and agroecological data. The information of 30 specimens of herbarium was consulted. Interviews were conducted with the representatives of the state council of mezcal in Guerrero, the company Sanzekan Tinemi and Mezcalli del Sur, to complement the information of the areas. A database was created where the information of each copy was included, as well as the information obtained from the interviews. Criteria for selecting potential areas of A. angustifoliawere defined, after which a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was constructed, generating mapping areas with agroclimatic and agro potential, wherein the optimal suboptimal and marginal areas for the establishment of A. angustifolia were delineated. For the validation of the information, field visits were made to specific sites to verify the agroecological conditions of the potential areas obtained in this research. Results: There are approximately 1,020,998.27 ha with optimum aptitude and 618,015.87 ha with suboptimal aptitude. Limitations on study/implications: We suggest to incorporate information referring to the physiology, productivity and genetic diversity of the native populations of A. angustifolia. Findings/conclusions: The regions with the highest and suboptimal potential for the plantations of A. angustifolia are Norte, Tierra Caliente and Centro, where the largest production of mezcal in the state occurs.  Objetivo: Determinar áreas optimas y subóptimas para establecer plantaciones de Agave angustifolia Haw. en el estado de Guerrero, México. Diseño/metodología/aproximación: Se recolectaron 139 ejemplares de A. angustifolia, para cada ejemplar se registraron datos fenotípicos, agroclimáticos y agroecológicos. Se consultó la información de 30 ejemplares de herbario; además se entrevistaron a los representantes del Consejo Estatal del Mezcal en Guerrero, la empresa Sanzekan Tinemi y la empresa Mezcalli del Sur, para complementar la información de las áreas. Se generó una base de datos donde se incluyó la información de cada ejemplar, así como la obtenida de entrevistas. Se definieron criterios para la selección de áreas potenciales de A. angustifolia, después de lo cual se construyó un Sistema de Información Geográfica (SIG),generando la cartografía de las áreas con potencial agroclimático y agroecológico, donde se delimitaron las áreas optimas, subóptimas y marginales, para el establecimiento de A. angustifolia. Para la validación de la información, se realizaron visitas de campo a sitios específicos para verificar las condiciones agroecológicas de las áreas potenciales obtenidas en el presente trabajo. Resultados: Los resultados indican que existen aproximadamente 1,020,998.27 ha con aptitud óptima y 618,015.87 ha con aptitud subóptima. Limitaciones del estudio/implicaciones: se sugiere incorporar información referente a la fisiología, productividad y diversidad genética de las poblaciones nativas de A. angustifolia. Hallazgos/conclusiones: Las regiones con mayor potencial optimo y subóptimo para las plantaciones de A. angustifolia son Norte, Tierra Caliente y Centro, donde además se presenta la mayor producción de mezcal en el estado

    First Measurement of Z/gamma* Production in Compton Scattering of Quasi-real Photons

    We report the first observation of Z/gamma* production in Compton scattering of quasi-real photons. This is a subprocess of the reaction e+e- to e+e-Z/gamma*, where one of the final state electrons is undetected. Approximately 55 pb-1 of data collected in the year 1997 at an e+e- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP have been analysed. The Z/gamma* from Compton scattering has been detected in the hadronic decay channel. Within well defined kinematic bounds, we measure the product of cross-section and Z/gamma* branching ratio to hadrons to be (0.9+-0.3+-0.1) pb for events with a hadronic mass larger than 60 GeV, dominated by (e)eZ production. In the hadronic mass region between 5 GeV and 60 GeV, dominated by (e)egamma* production, this product is found to be (4.1+-1.6+-0.6) pb. Our results agree with the predictions of two Monte Carlo event generators, grc4f and PYTHIA.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures included, submitted to Physics Letters

    Search for Higgs Bosons in e+e- Collisions at 183 GeV

    The data collected by the OPAL experiment at sqrts=183 GeV were used to search for Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Standard Model and various extensions, such as general models with two Higgs field doublets and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 54pb-1. None of the searches for neutral and charged Higgs bosons have revealed an excess of events beyond the expected background. This negative outcome, in combination with similar results from searches at lower energies, leads to new limits for the Higgs boson masses and other model parameters. In particular, the 95% confidence level lower limit for the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson is 88.3 GeV. Charged Higgs bosons can be excluded for masses up to 59.5 GeV. In the MSSM, mh > 70.5 GeV and mA > 72.0 GeV are obtained for tan{beta}>1, no and maximal scalar top mixing and soft SUSY-breaking masses of 1 TeV. The range 0.8 < tanb < 1.9 is excluded for minimal scalar top mixing and m{top} < 175 GeV. More general scans of the MSSM parameter space are also considered.Comment: 49 pages.     A Measurement of the Product Branching Ratio f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) in Z0 Decays

    The product branching ratio, f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X), where Lambda_b denotes any weakly-decaying b-baryon, has been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. Lambda_b are selected by the presence of energetic Lambda particles in bottom events tagged by the presence of displaced secondary vertices. A fit to the momenta of the Lambda particles separates signal from B meson and fragmentation backgrounds. The measured product branching ratio is f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) = (2.67+-0.38(stat)+0.67-0.60(sys))% Combined with a previous OPAL measurement, one obtains f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) = (3.50+-0.32(stat)+-0.35(sys))%.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 3 eps figs included, submitted to the European Physical Journal

    Measurement of the Michel Parameters in Leptonic Tau Decays

    The Michel parameters of the leptonic tau decays are measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The Michel parameters are extracted from the energy spectra of the charged decay leptons and from their energy-energy correlations. A new method involving a global likelihood fit of Monte Carlo generated events with complete detector simulation and background treatment has been applied to the data recorded at center-of-mass energies close to sqrt(s) = M(Z) corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 155 pb-1 during the years 1990 to 1995. If e-mu universality is assumed and inferring the tau polarization from neutral current data, the measured Michel parameters are extracted. Limits on non-standard coupling constants and on the masses of new gauge bosons are obtained.     An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics

    For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types

    The fate of carbon in a mature forest under carbon dioxide enrichment

    Atmospheric carbon dioxide enrichment (eCO2) can enhance plant carbon uptake and growth1 5, thereby providing an important negative feedback to climate change by slowing the rate of increase of the atmospheric CO2 concentration6. Although evidence gathered from young aggrading forests has generally indicated a strong CO2 fertilization effect on biomass growth3 5, it is unclear whether mature forests respond to eCO2 in a similar way. In mature trees and forest stands7 10, photosynthetic uptake has been found to increase under eCO2 without any apparent accompanying growth response, leaving the fate of additional carbon fixed under eCO2 unclear4,5,7 11. Here using data from the first ecosystem-scale Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment in a mature forest, we constructed a comprehensive ecosystem carbon budget to track the fate of carbon as the forest responded to four years of eCO2 exposure. We show that, although the eCO2 treatment of +150 parts per million (+38 per cent) above ambient levels induced a 12 per cent (+247 grams of carbon per square metre per year) increase in carbon uptake through gross primary production, this additional carbon uptake did not lead to increased carbon sequestration at the ecosystem level. Instead, the majority of the extra carbon was emitted back into the atmosphere via several respiratory fluxes, with increased soil respiration alone accounting for half of the total uptake surplus. Our results call into question the predominant thinking that the capacity of forests to act as carbon sinks will be generally enhanced under eCO2, and challenge the efficacy of climate mitigation strategies that rely on ubiquitous CO2 fertilization as a driver of increased carbon sinks in global forests. © 2020, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited
