    Synoptic conditions producing cirrus during the FIRE cirrus IFO

    Although direct observations of cirrus clouds by the FIRE research aircraft were usually confined to the area of Intensive Field Observation (IFO) surface network, these cirrus were generally part of a more extensive zone of upper level cloudiness. It is these large scale patterns of cirriform cloud and their relationship to the corresponding synoptic environment which are the prime focus. Three conceptual models are presented and each of the individual cases are classified into one of these categories. Although the cases manifest significant differences in intensity and small scale structure, it is believed that they are best viewed in this unified context. The descriptions given are mostly qualitative, however, quantitative descriptions of the synoptic control and its relationship to cloud structure for all the IFO cases are summarized. The synoptic situations in which extensive cirriform clouds were observed are classified into three basic types: warm front cases, cold front cases, and closed low aloft cases. Additionally, an extra degree of freedom is introduced to treat the volumetric locking steaming from the effective response of the medium; its balance equation is also stabilized.     Aerosol-assisted metallo-organic chemical vapour deposition of Bi2Se3 films using single-molecule precursors: the crystal structure of bismuth(m) dibutyldiselenocarbamate

    The complexes [Bi{Se2CN(C2H5)2}3], [Bi{Se2CN(C4H9)2}3], [Bi{Se2CN(CH3)(C4H9)}3] and [Bi{Se2CN(CH3)(C6H13)}3] have been synthesized and characterized structurally using IR, 1H and 13C NMR. In addition, the crystal structure of [Bi{Se2CN(C4H9)2}3] was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing the bismuth centre coordinated to three dialkyldiselenocarbamate ligands through the selenium donor atoms. The Bi(III) compounds were used as precursors for the deposition of Bi2Se3 films on glass substrates through aerosol-assisted metallo-organic chemical vapour deposition (AA-MOCVD)

    Three-Step Model of Dispersed Flow Heat Transfer (Post CHF Vertical Flow)

    The paper presents a three step model of the dispersed flow heat transfer process, using an analysis of a single drop motion and heat transfer, and a statistical representation of the overall behaviour of the drops. The resulting equation gives the total heat transferred to the flow in terms of the mass flux, flow quality, fluid properties, wall roughness, and wall superheat. It includes the effect of contact angle or change in the wet ability of the surface. The range of validity of the model and the equation extends from dry wall film boiling to transition boiling, and is limited on the low temperature end by the critical Heat Flux region. Since the equation is analytically derived, its differentiation with respect to wall superheat will yield the Minimum Heat Flux point. The equation and model provide a very powerful base for analysis and prediction of post Critical Heat Flux heat transfer. The stable film boiling data for dispersed vertical flow of liquid nitrogen from reference [1] have been compared with the prediction and the results have been favourable

    Comparison of Euler-Lagrangian and Fischer's Methods of Predicting Dispersion Coefficient

    This paper is aimed at comparing the prediction of dispersion coefficient of a natural stream using a new Euler-Lagrangian model, Fischer's models and Levenspiel and smith equation. In order to achieve this, stream data were extracted from \American Stream Tracer Analysis on Humboldt River" and applied to the models. Results showed that slightly higher values of dispersion coefficients were obtained using the Euler-Lagrangian model than Fischer's. The percentage difference ranges from 4.26% to 16.59%. The Levenspiel and smith approach predicted values 1 to 3 times larger than the new method. In addition to the available data from literature, limited eld data collected from River Ebere in Enugu State, Nigeria were used in the analysis.     Behavioural activation written self-help to improve mood, wellbeing and quality of life in people with dementia supported by informal carers (PROMOTE): study protocol for a single-arm feasibility study.

    Background: Increases in life expectancy have resulted in a global rise in dementia prevalence. Dementia is associated with poor wellbeing, low quality of life and increased incidence of mental health difficulties such as, low mood or depression. However, currently there is limited access to evidence-based psychological interventions for people with dementia experiencing low mood and poor wellbeing. Behavioural activation-based self-help, supported by informal carers and guided by mental health professionals, may represent an effective and acceptable solution. Methods/design: The present study is a Phase II (feasibility) single-arm trial informed by the MRC Complex Interventions Research Methods Framework. Up to fifty dementia participant/informal carer dyads will be recruited from a variety of settings including primary care, dementia-specific health settings, and community outreach. People living with dementia will receive behavioural activation based self-help and be supported by their informal carer who has received training in the skills required to support the self-help approach. In turn, during the use of the intervention the informal carer will be guided by mental health professionals to help them work through the materials and problem solve any difficulties. Consistent with the objectives of feasibility studies, outcomes relating to recruitment from different settings, employment of different recruitment methods, attrition, data collection procedures, clinical delivery and acceptability of the intervention will be examined. Clinical outcomes for people with dementia (symptoms of depression and quality of life) and informal carers (symptoms of depression and anxiety, carer burden and quality of life) will be measured pretreatment and at 3 months post-treatment allocation. Discussion: This study will examine the feasibility and acceptability of a novel behavioural activation-based self-help intervention designed to promote wellbeing and improve low mood in people living with dementia, alongside methodological and procedural uncertainties associated with research-related procedures. As determined by pre-specified progression criteria, if research procedures and the new intervention demonstrate feasibility and acceptability, results will then be used to inform the design of a pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) to specifically examine remaining methodological uncertainties associated with recruitment into a randomised controlled design.This study is collaboratively funded by Cornwall Foundation Partnership Trust, South West Peninsula Academic Health Sciences Network and the University of Exeter

    Long term adverse drug reaction to Efavirenz in a HIV infected adolescent

    Efavirenz is one of the medications used in combined antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the management of HIV infection in adolescents. Various central nervous system adverse reactions have been reported in patients commencing antiretroviral therapy with a regimen containing Efavirenz. These reactions tend to be acute, commonly occurring in the first six months of therapy. Adverse reactions following long term use of Efavirenz for ART is rare among adults and rarer still among children and adolescents. There is only one published case of serious adverse reaction to Efavirenz in an adolescent after long-term use. The case of a male HIV Positive Nigerian patient aged 13 years. He presented with five-day history of Difficulty sleeping, abnormal dreams, inability to concentrate, restlessness, irrational behavior and long-term memory loss. There was no previous history of psychiatric illness and no suggestive social or family history. Patient was on Efavirenz containing regimen about 6.5 years till presentation with adverse reaction mainly affecting behavior, thought processes and memory. After discontinuing Efavirenz and replacing with Nevirapine in his combined ART regimen, all neuropsychiatric manifestations ceased .He regained his memory, no longer had bad dreams or demonstrated any irrational behavior or attitude. Physicians who are involved in the care of HIV infected patients need to be aware of the possibility of adverse Drug reactions occurring in patients who have been on antiretroviral drugs for years.     Torosaurus Is Not Triceratops: Ontogeny in Chasmosaurine Ceratopsids as a Case Study in Dinosaur Taxonomy

    Background: In horned dinosaurs, taxonomy is complicated by the fact that the cranial ornament that distinguishes species changes with age. Based on this observation, it has been proposed that the genera Triceratops and Torosaurus are in fact synonymous, with specimens identified as Torosaurus representing the adult form of Triceratops. The hypothesis of synonymy makes three testable predictions: 1) the species in question should have similar geographic and stratigraphic distributions, 2) specimens assigned to Torosaurus should be more mature than those assigned to Triceratops, and 3) intermediates should exist that combine features of Triceratops and Torosaurus. The first condition appears to be met, but it remains unclear whether the other predictions are borne out by the fossil evidence. Methodology/Principal Findings: We assessed the relative maturity of Torosaurus and Triceratops specimens by coding skulls for characters that vary with maturity, and then using a clustering analysis to arrange them into a growth series. We found that a well-defined sequence of changes exists in horned dinosaurs: development of cranial ornament occurs in juveniles, followed by fusion of the skull roof in subadults, and finally, the epoccipitals, epijugals, and rostral fuse to the skull in adults. Using this scheme, we identified mature and immature individuals of both Torosaurus and Triceratops. Furthermore, we describe the ventral depressions on the frill of Triceratops, and show that they differ in shape and position from the parietal fenestrae of Torosaurus.
