    Self-diffusion in sheared suspensions by dynamic simulation

    The behaviour of the long-time self-diffusion tensor in concentrated colloidal dispersions is studied using dynamic simulation. The simulations are of a suspension of monodisperse Brownian hard spheres in simple shear flow as a function of the Péclet number, Pe, which measures the relative importance of shear and Brownian forces, and the volume fraction, [phi]. Here, Pe = &[gamma]dot;a^2/D0, where &[gamma]dot; is the shear rate, a the particle size and D0 = kT/6[pi][eta]a is the Stokes–Einstein diffusivity of an isolated particle of size a with thermal energy kT in a solvent of viscosity [eta]. Two simulations algorithms are used: Stokesian Dynamics for inclusion of the many-body hydrodynamic interactions, and Brownian Dynamics for suspensions without hydrodynamic interactions. A new procedure for obtaining high-quality diffusion data based on averaging the results of many short simulations is presented and utilized. At low shear rates, low Pe, Brownian diffusion due to a random walk process dominates and the characteristic scale for diffusion is the Stokes–Einstein diffusivity, D0. At zero Pe the diffusivity is found to be a decreasing function of [phi]. As Pe is slowly increased, O(Pe) and O(Pe^3/2) corrections to the diffusivity due to the flow are clearly seen in the Brownian Dynamics system in agreement with the theoretical results of Morris & Brady (1996). At large shear rates, large Pe, both systems exhibit diffusivities that grow linearly with the shear rate by the non-Brownian mechanism of shear-induced diffusion. In contrast to the behaviour at low Pe, this shear-induced diffusion mode is an increasing function of [phi]. Long-time rotational self-diffusivities are of interest in the Stokesian Dynamics system and show similar behaviour to their translational analogues. An off-diagonal long-time self-diffusivity, Dxy, is reported for both systems. Results for both the translational and rotational Dxy show a sign change from low Pe to high Pe due to different mechanisms in the two regimes. A physical explanation for the off-diagonal diffusivities is proposed

    Advection of a Passive Scalar by a Vortex Couple in the Small-diffusion Limit

    We study the advection of a passive scalar by a vortex couple in the small-diffusion (i.e. large Péclet number, Pe) limit. The presence of weak diffusion enhances mixing within the couple and allows the gradual escape of the scalar from the couple into the surrounding flow. An averaging technique is applied to obtain an averaged diffusion equation for the concentration inside the dipole which agrees with earlier results of Rhines & Young for large times. At the outer edge of the dipole, a diffusive boundary layer of width O(Pe−½) forms; asymptotic matching to the interior of the dipole yields effective boundary conditions for the averaged diffusion equation. The analysis predicts that first the scalar is homogenized along the streamlines on a timescale O(Pe−13\frac{1}{3}). The scalar then diffuses across the streamlines on the diffusive timescale, O(Pe). Scalar that diffuses into the boundary layer is swept to the rear stagnation point, and a finite proportion is expelled into the exterior flow. Expulsion occurs on the diffusive timescale at a rate governed by the lowest eigenvalue of the averaged diffusion equation for large times. A split-step particle method is developed and used to verify the asymptotic results. Finally, some speculations are made on the viscous decay of the dipole in which the vorticity plays a role analogous to the passive scalar

    A lattice estimate of the g_{D^* D pi} coupling

    We present the results of the first direct determination of the g_{D^* D pi} coupling using lattice QCD. From our simulations in the quenched approximation, we obtain g_{D^* D pi} = 18.8 +/- 2.3^{+1.1}_{-2.0} and hat(g) = 0.67 +/- 0.08^{+0.04}_{-0.06}.     Spontaneous pneumomediastinum as the presenting sign of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection

    Introdução: O pneumomediastino espontâneo (PE) define-se pela presença de ar livre no mediastino, sem causa traumática. É raro em idade pediátrica e exige elevada suspeição diagnóstica. Caso Clínico: Adolescente de 17 anos, longilíneo, fumador ocasional, sem história traumática nem patologia pulmonar, observado na Urgência por dor retrosternal intensa acompanhada por dispneia ligeira. Referência a acessos de tosse seca violenta horas antes. O diagnóstico de PE suspeitou-se pela palpação de enfisema subcutâneo supraclavicular e confirmou-se por telerradiografia do tórax mostrando ar livre mediastínico. A investigação revelou infeção por Mycoplasma pneumoniae pelo que foi medicado com macrólido para além do repouso e analgesia propostos para o PE, evoluindo favoravelmente. Discussão/Conclusôes: O PE é um diagnóstico a não esquecer perante dor torácica aguda no adolescente. A presença de sintomas, por vezes, frustres e a evolução habitualmente benigna contribuem para um provável subdiagnóstico. O tabagismo é um fator predisponente. A associação a infeção por Mycoplasma pneumoniae só raramente foi descrita.Introduction: Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SP) results from nontraumatic mediastinal air leakage. It is uncommon in children requiring a high index of suspicion. Case Report: A 17-year-old tall thin boy, light smoker, with no history of trauma or lung disease presented to our emergency room with symptoms dominated by chest pain and mild dyspnea. He reported a violent cough event in the previous hours. Pneumomediastinum was suspected considering the presence of subcutaneous air in the supraclavicular region, and was confirmed by chest radiograph, which showed mediastinal air. Serology study was positive for Mycoplasma pneumoniae and therefore a macrolide was added to symptomatic treatment, with a complete recovery. Discussion/Conclusion: SP is a diagnosis to consider when facing an adolescent with acute chest pain. This condition is possibly underdiagnosed, given its benign course and mild symptoms. Smoking acts as a predisposing factor

    Gluon two- and three-point Green Functions computed in Landau gauge from the lattice show the existence of power corrections to the purely perturbative expressions, that can be explained through an Operator Product Expansion as the influence of a non gauge invariant mass dimension two condensate.     The initiator methionine tRNA drives cell migration and invasion leading to increased metastatic potential in melanoma

    The cell's repertoire of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) has been linked to cancer. Recently, levels of the initiator methionine tRNA (tRNAiMet) in stromal fibroblasts have been shown to influence extracellular matrix (ECM) secretion to drive tumour growth and angiogenesis. Here we show that increased tRNAiMet within cancer cells does not influence tumour growth, but drives cell migration and invasion via a mechanism that is independent from ECM synthesis and dependent on α5β1 integrin and levels of the translation initiation ternary complex. In vivo and ex vivo migration (but not proliferation) of melanoblasts is significantly enhanced in transgenic mice which express additional copies of the tRNAiMet gene. We show that increased tRNAiMet in melanoma drives migratory, invasive behaviour and metastatic potential without affecting cell proliferation and primary tumour growth, and that expression of RNA polymerase III-associated genes (which drive tRNA expression) are elevated in metastases by comparison with primary tumours. Thus specific alterations to the cancer cell tRNA repertoire drive a migration/invasion programme that may lead to metastasis
