    Chaos in resonant-tunneling superlattices

    Spatio-temporal chaos is predicted to occur in n-doped semiconductor superlattices with sequential resonant tunneling as their main charge transport mechanism. Under dc voltage bias, undamped time-dependent oscillations of the current (due to the motion and recycling of electric field domain walls) have been observed in recent experiments.     Self-sustained time-dependent current oscillations under dc voltage bias have been observed in recent experiments on n-doped semiconductor superlattices with sequential resonant tunneling. The current oscillations are caused by the motion and recycling of the domain wall separating low- and high-electric- field regions of the superlattice, as the analysis of a discrete drift model shows and experimental evidence supports. Numerical simulation shows that different nonlinear dynamical regimes of the domain wall appear when an external microwave signal is superimposed on the dc bias and its driving frequency and driving amplitude vary. On the frequency - amplitude parameter plane, there are regions of entrainment and quasiperiodicity forming Arnol'd tongues. Chaos is demonstrated to appear at the boundaries of the tongues and in the regions where they overlap.     Effects of noise on hysteresis and resonance width in graphene and nanotubes resonators

    We investigate the role that noise plays in the hysteretic dynamics of a suspended nanotube or a graphene sheet subject to an oscillating force. We find that not only the size but also the position of the hysteresis region in these systems can be controlled by noise. We also find that nano-resonators act as noise rectifiers: by increasing the noise in the setup, the resonance width of the characteristic peak in these systems is reduced and, as a result, the quality factor is increased.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures.     Current-voltage characteristic and stability in resonant-tunneling n-doped semiconductor superlattices

    We review the occurrence of electric-field domains in doped superlattices within a discrete drift model. A complete analysis of the construction and stability of stationary field profiles having two domains is carried out. As a consequence, we can provide a simple analytical estimation for the doping density above which stable stable domains occur. This bound may be useful for the design of superlattices exhibiting self-sustained current oscillations. Furthermore we explain why stable domains occur in superlattices in contrast to the usual Gunn diode.Comment: Tex file and 3 postscript figure

    La fibra dietética es un componente importante de las dietas de las aves. La inclusión en el pienso de ciertos tipos de fibra en cantidad adecuada mejora la adaptación del tracto gastrointestinal (TGI) a los actuales sistemas de producción y de alimentación, reduciendo los trastornos digestivos y mejorando la productividad global (Jiménez-Moreno et al., 2009; Mateos et al., 2002). La fibra dietética puede aumentar el tiempo de retención de la digesta en la parte proximal del TGI y tiene un marcado efecto sobre la anatomía y el desarrollo y funcionamiento del mismo (Mateos et al., 2012), con aumento del tamaño de la molleja (Hetland et al., 2005) y de la longitud de diversos órganos digestivos (Van der Klis y Van Voorst, 1993; Iji et al., 2001). Es una práctica común en la industria suministrar piensos fibrosos durante la última fase de recría a fin de mejorar la capacidad de ingesta de las pollitas y mejorar la productividad de las aves en el inicio de puesta. Sin embargo, la información existente sobre el beneficio de esta práctica es muy limitada. La hipótesis de este estudio fue que cambios en el desarrollo del TGI durante la fase de recría debido a la inclusión de diversas fuentes de fibra en el pienso podrían mejorar los parámetros productivos durante la puesta, especialmente durante el inicio de la misma

    Quasiperiodic time dependent current in driven superlattices: distorted Poincare maps and strange attractors

    Intriguing routes to chaos have been experimentally observed in semiconductor superlattices driven by an ac field. In this work, a theoretical model of time dependent transport in ac driven superlattices is numerically solved. In agreement with experiments, distorted Poincare maps in the quasiperiodic regime are found. They indicate the appearance of very complex attractors and routes to chaos as the amplitude of the AC signal increases. Distorted maps are caused by the discrete well-to-well jump motion of a domain wall during spiky high-frequency self-sustained oscillations of the current.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Electrically tunable GHz oscillations in doped GaAs-AlAs superlattices

    Tunable oscillatory modes of electric-field domains in doped semiconductor superlattices are reported. The experimental investigations demonstrate the realization of tunable, GHz frequencies in GaAs-AlAs superlattices covering the temperature region from 5 to 300 K. The orgin of the tunable oscillatory modes is determined using an analytical and a numerical modeling of the dynamics of domain formation. Three different oscillatory modes are found. Their presence depends on the actual shape of the drift velocity curve, the doping density, the boundary condition, and the length of the superlattice. For most bias regions, the self-sustained oscillations are due to the formation, motion, and recycling of the domain boundary inside the superlattice. For some biases, the strengths of the low and high field domain change periodically in time with the domain boundary being pinned within a few quantum wells. The dependency of the frequency on the coupling leads to the prediction of a new type of tunable GHz oscillator based on semiconductor superlattices.Comment: Tex file (20 pages) and 16 postscript figure

    Discrete models of dislocations and their motion in cubic crystals

    A discrete model describing defects in crystal lattices and having the standard linear anisotropic elasticity as its continuum limit is proposed. The main ingredients entering the model are the elastic stiffness constants of the material and a dimensionless periodic function that restores the translation invariance of the crystal and influences the Peierls stress. Explicit expressions are given for crystals with cubic symmetry: sc, fcc and bcc. Numerical simulations of this model with conservative or damped dynamics illustrate static and moving edge and screw dislocations and describe their cores and profiles. Dislocation loops and dipoles are also numerically observed. Cracks can be created and propagated by applying a sufficient load to a dipole formed by two edge dislocations.Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
