Benchmarking clear-sky reflectances
Accurate calculations of shortwave reflectances in clear-sky aerosol-laden atmospheres are necessary for various applications in atmospheric sciences. However, computational cost becomes increasingly important for some applications such as data assimilation of top-of-atmosphere reflectances in models of atmospheric composition. This study aims to provide a benchmark that can help in assessing these two requirements in combination. We describe a protocol and input data for 44 080 cases involving various solar and viewing geometries, four different surfaces (one oceanic bidirectional reflectance function and three albedo values for a Lambertian surface), eight aerosol optical depths, five wavelengths, and four aerosol types. We first consider two models relying on the discrete ordinate method: VLIDORT (in vector and scalar configurations) and DISORT (scalar configuration only). We use VLIDORT in its vector configuration as a reference model and quantify the loss of accuracy due to (i) neglecting the effect of polarization in DISORT and VLIDORT (scalar) models and (ii) decreasing the number of streams in DISORT. We further test two other models: the 6SV2 model, relying on the successive orders of scattering method, and Forward-Lobe Two-Stream Radiance Model (FLOTSAM), a new model under development by two of the authors. Typical mean fractional errors of 2.8 % and 2.4 % for 6SV2 and FLOTSAM are found, respectively. Computational cost depends on the input parameters but also on the code implementation and application as some models solve the radiative transfer equations for a range of geometries while others do not. All necessary input and output data are provided as a Supplement as a potential resource for interested developers and users of radiative transfer models
Schizanthus grahamii and Schizanthus hookeri. Is there any relationship between their anthocyanin compositions and their different pollination syndromes?
[EN] Three different pollination syndromes (bee, hummingbird and moth-pollination syndromes) have been described for the different species of the genus Schizanthus Ruiz & Pav. (Solanaceae). Two closely related species from a phylogenetic point of view, Schizanthus grahamii and Schizanthus hookeri, show hummingbird and bee-pollination syndromes, respectively. One of the traits used to assign these pollination syndromes is the colour of the petals, which is red in S. grahamii and bluish-pink in S. hookeri. The objective of this work was to establish the differences in the anthocyanin composition of these two Schizanthus species that contribute to the different pollination syndrome. Identification of the pigments was carried out from the chromatographic and spectral data supplied by the HPLC-DAD-MSn analyses of the samples. Alkaline and acid hydrolyses were also performed in the extracts and in some isolated compounds in order to confirm the identities. First difference between these two species was found in the total anthocyanin content, which was about 13-fold higher in S. grahamii than in S. hookeri. Furthermore, the major peak was also different in both cases, thus explaining quantitative and qualitative colour differences between species. Delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside represented ca. 72% of the total area in S. grahamii and petanin (Petunidin 3-O-p-coumaroylrutinoside-5-O-glucoside) accounted for almost 62% of the total area in S. hookeri. The presence of the p-coumaroylrutinosyl moiety in the petanin makes the intramolecular copigmentation possible, thus conferring the bluish-pink hue to the petals of S. hookeri. Delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside is in turn responsible for the red colour exhibited by the petals of S. grahamii and along with other floral traits, responsible for the attraction of hummingbirds to the plant. Pigments structurally related to petanin, which have been often detected in other genus of Solanaceae, were detected in both species and in similar contents, supporting results from previous studies that pointed to a bee-pollinated common ancestor for both species that further specialised acquiring traits attractive to hummingbirds and among them, red colour of the petals which is mainly supplied by delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside
Refining the scalar and tensor contributions in decays
In this article we analyze the contribution from intermediate spin-0 and
spin-2 resonances to the decay by means of a chiral
invariant Lagrangian incorporating these mesons. In particular, we study the
corresponding axial-vector form-factors. The advantage of this procedure with
respect to previous analyses is that it incorporates chiral (and isospin)
invariance and, hence, the partial conservation of the axial-vector current.
This ensures the recovery of the right low-energy limit, described by chiral
perturbation theory, and the transversality of the current in the chiral limit
at all energies. Furthermore, the meson form-factors are further improved by
requiring appropriate QCD high-energy conditions. We end up with a brief
discussion on its implementation in the Tauola Monte Carlo and the prospects
for future analyses of Belle's data.Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures. Extended discussion on the numerical importance

Limits on the Dipole Moments of the -Lepton via the Process $e^{+}e^{-}\to \tau^+ \tau^- \gamma in a Left-Right Symmetric Model
Limits on the anomalous magnetic moment and the electric dipole moment of the
lepton are calculated through the reaction at the -pole and in the framework of a left-right symmetric model.
The results are based on the recent data reported by the L3 Collaboration at
CERN LEP. Due to the stringent limit of the model mixing angle , the
effect of this angle on the dipole moments is quite small.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
Searching for Anomalous Weak Couplings of Heavy Flavors at the SLC and LEP
The existence of anomalous electric() and/or
magnetic() dipole moment couplings between the heavy flavor fermions
() and the boson can cause significant shifts in the values of
several electroweak observables currently being probed at both the SLC and LEP.
Using the good agreement between existing data and the predictions of the
Standard Model we obtain strict bounds on the possible strength of these new
interactions for all of the heavy flavors. The decay ,
however, provides some possible hint of new physics. The corresponding
anomalous couplings of 's to photons is briefly examined.Comment: 21 pages, 14 figs(available on request), LaTex, SLAC-PUB-667
Sublittoral soft bottom communities and diversity of Mejillones Bay in northern Chile (Humboldt Current upwelling system)
The macrozoobenthos of Mejillones Bay (23°S; Humboldt Current) was quantitatively investigated over a 7-year period from austral summer 1995/1996 to winter 2002. About 78 van Veen grab samples taken at six stations (5, 10, 20 m depth) provided the basis for the analysis of the distribution of 60 species and 28 families of benthic invertebrates, as well as of their abundance and biomass. Mean abundance (2,119 individuals m-2) was in the same order compared to a previous investigation; mean biomass (966 g formalin wet mass m-2), however, exceeded prior estimations mainly due to the dominance of the bivalve Aulacomya ater. About 43% of the taxa inhabited the complete depth range. Mean taxonomic Shannon diversity (H', Log e) was 1.54 ± 0.58 with a maximum at 20 m (1.95 ± 0.33); evenness increased with depth. The fauna was numerically dominated by carnivorous gastropods, polychaetes and crustaceans (48%). About 15% of the species were suspensivorous, 13% sedimentivorous, 11% detritivorous, 7% omnivorous and 6% herbivorous. Cluster analyses showed a significant difference between the shallow and the deeper stations. Gammarid amphipods and the polychaete family Nephtyidae characterized the 5-mzone, the molluscs Aulacomya ater, Mitrella unifasciata and gammarids the intermediate zone, while the gastropod Nassarius gayi and the polychaete family Nereidae were most prominent at the deeper stations. The communities of the three depth zones did not appear to be limited by hypoxia during non-El Niño conditions. Therefore, no typical change in community structure occurred during El Niño 1997–1998, in contrast to what was observed for deeper faunal assemblages and hypoxic bays elsewhere in the coastal Humboldt Current system
Fundamental Symmetries and Interactions
In Nuclear Physics numerous possibilities exist to investigate fundamental
symmetries and interactions. In particular, the precise measurements of
properties of fundamental fermions, searches for new interactions in
-decays, and violations of discrete symmeties offer possibilities to
search for physics beyond Standard Theory. Precise measurements of fundamental
constants can be carried out. Low energy experiments allow to probe New Physics
at mass scales far beyond the reach of present accelerators or such planned for
the future and at which predicted new particles could be produced directly.Comment: Review talk at the International Nuclear Physics Conference INPC04,

Quark-hadron duality, axial anomaly and mixing
Interplay between axial anomaly and quark-hadron duality in the presence of
strong mixing is considered. The anomaly sum rule for meson transition form
factors based on the dispersive representation of axial anomaly and
quark-hadron duality in octet channel is analyzed. The comparison of this sum
rule to the experimental data on and mesons transition form
factors shows that the interval of duality in this channel is rather small,
contradicting the usual understanding of quark-hadron duality. The same values
of interval of duality are supported by considering the two-point correlator in
the local duality limit. This contradiction may be resolved by introducing of
some nonperturbative non-OPE correction to the relevant spectral density. The
form and value of this correction are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, reference adde
