    Tricritical wedge filling transitions with short-ranged forces

    We show that the 3D wedge filling transition in the presence of short-ranged interactions can be first-order or second order depending on the strength of the line tension associated with to the wedge bottom. This fact implies the existence of a tricritical point characterized by a short-distance expansion which differs from the usual continuous filling transition. Our analysis is based on an effective one-dimensional model for the 3D wedge filling which arises from the identification of the breather modes as the only relevant interfacial fluctuations. From such analysis we find a correspondence between continuous 3D filling at bulk coexistence and 2D wetting transitions with random-bond disorder.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 6th Liquid Matter Conference Proceedings (to be published in J.     Agriculture department programs in 43 states surveyed offer similar services in regulation, market promotion, and natural resource conservation but are organized differently. Two OLS equations were estimated to explain state agriculture department expenditures as a function of gross farm sales, farm receipts mix, degree of government centralization, the proportion of metropolitan area residents, and tax capacity. A positive relation was found between state agricultural spending and gross farm sales and the percent of fruit/vegetables farm receipts.     Atmospheric neutrinos in ice and measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters

    The main goal of the IceCube Deep Core Array is to search for neutrinos of astrophysical origins. Atmospheric neutrinos are commonly considered as a background for these searches.     Argentina tiene una historia de más de 60 años de programas alimentarios con escasísimas o nulas evaluaciones, aun cuando se han producido cambios epidemiológicos y sociales muy importantes en su población objetivo. En este artículo se revisan los programas alimentarios del Estado de alcance nacional, que tengan como propósito de su formulación contribuir a la seguridad alimentaria de las familias más necesitadas; se actualiza la situación nutricional de su población objetivo; y se proponen argumentos para analizar los programas vigentes a partir de una tipología basada en los componentes de la seguridad alimentaria. Una revisión general de los programas alimentarios requiere ser realizada desde su concepción, contenido y alcance, para que dejen de ser meras ayudas sociales y se transformen en portadores del derecho a una mejor alimentación y nutrición.Argentina has an over 60-year history of food programs which have received few to no evaluations, even considering the highly important epidemiological and social changes that have occurred in the target population. In this article, nationwide State-run food programs with the objective of contributing to the food security of the families in greatest need are reviewed, the nutritional situation of the target population is reassessed, and arguments for analyzing current programs using a typology based in the components of food security are proposed. A general review of the conceptions, content and reach of food programs should be carried out, in order for these programs to cease to act as mere social assistance and instead be transformed in bearers of the right to better food and nutrition

    Renormalisation group determination of the order of the DNA denaturation transition

    We report on the nature of the thermal denaturation transition of homogeneous DNA as determined from a renormalisation group analysis of the Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois model. Our approach is based on an analogy with the phenomenon of critical wetting that goes further than previous qualitative comparisons, and shows that the transition is continuous for the average base-pair separation. However, since the range of universal critical behaviour appears to be very narrow, numerically observed denaturation transitions may look first-order, as it has been reported in the literature.Comment: 6 pages; no figures; to appear in Europhysics Letter

    Constraining the neutrino magnetic dipole moment from white dwarf pulsations

    Pulsating white dwarf stars can be used as astrophysical laboratories to constrain the properties of weakly interacting particles. Comparing the cooling rates of these stars with the expected values from theoretical models allows us to search for additional sources of cooling due to the emission of axions, neutralinos, or neutrinos with magnetic dipole moment. In this work, we derive an upper bound to the neutrino magnetic dipole moment using an estimate of the rate of period change of the pulsating DB white dwarf star PG 1351+489. By comparing the theoretical rate of change of period expected for this star with the rate of change of period with time of PG 1351+489, we assess the possible existence of additional cooling by neutrinos with magnetic dipole moment. Our models suggest the existence of some additional cooling in this pulsating DB white dwarf, consistent with a non-zero magnetic dipole moment. Our upper limit for the neutrino magnetic dipole moment is somewhat less restrictive than, but still compatible with, other limits inferred from the white dwarf luminosity function or from the color-magnitude diagram of the Globular cluster M5. Further improvements of the measurement of the rate of period change of the dominant pulsation mode of PG 1351+489 will be necessary to confirm our bound.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables.     On the improvement of the low energy neutrino factory

    The low energy neutrino factory has been proposed as a very sensitive setup for future searches for CP violation and matter effects. Here we study how its performance is affected when the experimental specifications of the setup are varied. Most notably, we have considered the addition of the 'platinum' nu_{mu} -> nu_{e} channel. We find that, whilst theoretically the extra channel provides very useful complementary information and helps to lift degeneracies, its practical usefulness is lost when considering realistic background levels. Conversely, an increase in statistics in the 'golden' nu_{e} -> nu_{mu} channel and, to some extent, an improvement in the energy resolution, lead to an important increase in the performance of the facility, given the rich energy dependence of the 'golden' channel at these energies. We show that a low energy neutrino factory with a baseline of 1300 km, muon energy of 4.5 GeV, and either a 20 kton totally active scintillating detector or 100 kton liquid argon detector, can have outstanding sensitivity to the neutrino oscillation parameters theta13, delta and the mass hierarchy. For our estimated exposure of 2.8 x 10^{23} kton x decays per muon polarity, the low energy neutrino factory has sensitivity to theta13 and delta for sin^{2}(2theta13) > 10^{-4} and to the mass hierarchy for sin^{2}(2theta13) > 10^{-3}.Comment: 13 pages, 8 eps figures.     Generalized Berreman's model of the elastic surface free energy of a nematic liquid crystal on a sawtoothed substrate

    In this paper we present a generalization of Berreman's model for the elastic contribution to the surface free-energy density of a nematic liquid crystal in presence of a sawtooth substrate which favours homeotropic anchoring, as a function of the wavenumber of the surface structure qq, the tilt angle α\alpha and the surface anchoring strength ww. In addition to the previously reported non-analytic contribution proportional to qlnqq\ln q, due to the nucleation of disclination lines at the wedge bottoms and apexes of the substrate, the next-to-leading contribution is proportional to qq for a given substrate roughness, in agreement with Berreman's predictions. We characterise this term, finding that it has two contributions: the deviations of the nematic director field with respect to the corresponding to the isolated disclination lines, and their associated core free energies. Comparison with the results obtained from the Landau-de Gennes model shows that our model is quite accurate in the limit wL>1wL>1, when strong anchoring conditions are effectively achieved.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures; revised version submitted to Phys.
