First Attempt at Spectroscopic Detection of Gravity Modes in a Long-Period Pulsating Subdwarf B Star -- PG 1627+017
In the first spectroscopic campaign for a PG 1716 variable (or long-period
pulsating subdwarf B star), we succeeded in detecting velocity variations due
to g-mode pulsations at a level of 1.0-1.5 km/s.The observations were obtained
during 40 nights on 2-m class telescopes in Arizona, South Africa,and
Australia. The target,PG1627+017, is one of the brightest and largest amplitude
stars in its class.It is also the visible component of a post-common envelope
binary.Our final radial velocity data set includes 84 hours of time-series
spectroscopy over a time baseline of 53 days. Our derived radial velocity
amplitude spectrum, after subtracting the orbital motion, shows three potential
pulsational modes 3-4 sigma above the mean noise level, at 7201.0s,7014.6s and
7037.3s.Only one of the features is statistically likely to be real,but all
three are tantalizingly close to, or a one day alias of, the three strongest
periodicities found in the concurrent photometric campaign. We further
attempted to detect pulsational variations in the Balmer line amplitudes. The
single detected periodicity of 7209 s, although weak, is consistent with
theoretical expectations as a function of wavelength.Furthermore, it allows us
to rule out a degree index of l= 3 or l= 5 for that mode. Given the extreme
weakness of g-mode pulsations in these stars,we conclude that anything beyond
simply detecting their presence will require larger telescopes,higher
efficiency spectral monitoring over longer time baselines,improved longitude

Exomoon simulations
We introduce and describe our newly developed code that simulates light
curves and radial velocity curves for arbitrary transiting exoplanets with a
satellite. The most important feature of the program is the calculation of
radial velocity curves and the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect in such systems. We
discuss the possibilities for detecting the exomoons taking the abilities of
Extremely Large Telescopes into account. We show that satellites may be
detected also by their RM effect in the future, probably using less accurate
measurements than promised by the current instrumental developments. Thus, RM

Slowing down atomic diffusion in subdwarf B stars: mass loss or turbulence?
Subdwarf B stars show chemical peculiarities that cannot be explained by
diffusion theory alone. Both mass loss and turbulence have been invoked to slow
down atomic diffusion in order to match observed abundances. The fact that some
sdB stars show pulsations gives upper limits on the amount of mass loss and
turbulent mixing allowed. Consequently, non-adiabatic asteroseismology has the
potential to decide which process is responsible for the abundance anomalies.
We compute for the first time seismic properties of sdB models with atomic
diffusion included consistently during the stellar evolution. The diffusion
equations with radiative forces are solved for H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Fe and
Ni. We examine the effects of various mass-loss rates and mixed surface masses
on the abundances and mode stability. It is shown that the mass-loss rates
needed to simulate the observed He abundances (10^{-14}<=Mdot
[Msun/yr]<=10^{-13}) are not consistent with observed pulsations. We find that
for pulsations to be driven the rates should be Mdot<=10^{-15} Msun/yr. On the
other hand, weak turbulent mixing of the outer 10^{-6} Msun can explain the He
abundance anomalies while still allowing pulsations to be driven. The origin of
the turbulence remains unknown but the presence of pulsations gives tight

Parental cultural models and resources for understanding mathematical achievement in culturally diverse school settings
This paper proposes that the theoretical concept of cultural models can offer useful insights into parental involvement in their child’s mathematical achievement and the resources they use to go about gaining information in culturally diverse learning settings. This examination takes place within a cultural-developmental framework and draws on the notion of cultural models to explicate parental understandings of their child’s mathematics achievement and what resources are used to make sense of this. Three parental resources are scrutinized: (a) the teacher, (b) examination test results, and (c) constructions of child development. The interviews with 22 parents revealed some ambiguity around the interpretation of these resources by the parent, which was often the result of incongruent cultural models held between the home and the school. The resources mentioned are often perceived as being unambiguous but show themselves instead to be highly interpretive because of the diversity of cultural models in existence in culturally diverse settings. Parents who are in minority or marginalized positions tend to have difficulties in interpreting cultural models held by school, thereby disempowering them to be parentally involved in the way the school would like
Identification of blue high proper motion objects in the Tycho-2 and 2MASS catalogues using Virtual Observatory tools
With available Virtual Observatory tools, we looked for new bright blue high
proper motion objects in the entire sky: white dwarfs, hot subdwarfs, runaway
OB stars, and early-type stars in nearby young moving groups. We performed an
all-sky cross-match between the optical Tycho-2 and near-infrared 2MASS
catalogues with Aladin, and selected objects with proper motions >50mas/yr and
colours Vt-Ks<-0.5mag with TOPCAT. We also collected multi-wavelength
photometry, constructed the spectral energy distributions and estimated
effective temperatures from fits to atmospheric models with VOSA for the most
interesting targets. We assembled a sample of 32 bright blue high proper motion
objects, including ten sdO/B subdwarfs, nine DA white dwarfs, five young
early-type stars (two of which are runaway stars), two blue horizontal branch
stars, one star with poor information, and five objects reported for the first
time in this work. These last five objects have magnitudes Bt~11.0-11.6mag,
effective temperatures ~24,000-30,000K, and are located in the region of known
white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs in a reduced proper motion-colour diagram. We
confirmed the hot subdwarf nature of one of the new objects, Albus 5, with
public far-ultraviolet spectroscopic data obtained with FUSE.Comment: Published in Astronomy & Astrophysic
A database of whole-body action videos for the study of action, emotion, and untrustworthiness
We present a database of high-definition (HD) videos for the study of traits inferred from whole-body actions. Twenty-nine actors (19 female) were filmed performing different actions—walking, picking up a box, putting down a box, jumping, sitting down, and standing and acting—while conveying different traits, including four emotions (anger, fear, happiness, sadness), untrustworthiness, and neutral, where no specific trait was conveyed. For the actions conveying the four emotions and untrustworthiness, the actions were filmed multiple times, with the actor conveying the traits with different levels of intensity. In total, we made 2,783 action videos (in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional format), each lasting 7 s with a frame rate of 50 fps. All videos were filmed in a green-screen studio in order to isolate the action information from all contextual detail and to provide a flexible stimulus set for future use. In order to validate the traits conveyed by each action, we asked participants to rate each of the actions corresponding to the trait that the actor portrayed in the two-dimensional videos. To provide a useful database of stimuli of multiple actions conveying multiple traits, each video name contains information on the gender of the actor, the action executed, the trait conveyed, and the rating of its perceived intensity. The analysis of facial beauty: an emerging area of research in pattern analysis
Much research presented recently supports the idea that the human perception of attractiveness is data-driven and largely irrespective of the perceiver. This suggests using pattern analysis techniques for beauty analysis. Several scientific papers on this subject are appearing in image processing, computer vision and pattern analysis contexts, or use techniques of these areas. In this paper, we will survey the recent studies on automatic analysis of facial beauty, and discuss research lines and practical application
An expression signature of the angiogenic response in gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours: correlation with tumour phenotype and survival outcomes.
BACKGROUND: Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP-NETs) are heterogeneous with respect to biological behaviour and prognosis. As angiogenesis is a renowned pathogenic hallmark as well as a therapeutic target, we aimed to investigate the prognostic and clinico-pathological role of tissue markers of hypoxia and angiogenesis in GEP-NETs. METHODS: Tissue microarray (TMA) blocks were constructed with 86 tumours diagnosed from 1988 to 2010. Tissue microarray sections were immunostained for hypoxia inducible factor 1α (Hif-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), carbonic anhydrase IX (Ca-IX) and somatostatin receptors (SSTR) 1–5, Ki-67 and CD31. Biomarker expression was correlated with clinico-pathological variables and tested for survival prediction using Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression methods. RESULTS: Eighty-six consecutive cases were included: 51% male, median age 51 (range 16–82), 68% presenting with a pancreatic primary, 95% well differentiated, 51% metastatic. Higher grading (P=0.03), advanced stage (P<0.001), high Hif-1α and low SSTR-2 expression (P=0.03) predicted for shorter overall survival (OS) on univariate analyses. Stage, SSTR-2 and Hif-1α expression were confirmed as multivariate predictors of OS. Median OS for patients with SSTR-2+/Hif-1α-tumours was not reached after median follow up of 8.8 years, whereas SSTR-2-/Hif-1α+ GEP-NETs had a median survival of only 4.2 years (P=0.006). CONCLUSION: We have identified a coherent expression signature by immunohistochemistry that can be used for patient stratification and to optimise treatment decisions in GEP-NETs independently from stage and grading. Tumours with preserved SSTR-2 and low Hif-1α expression have an indolent phenotype and may be offered less aggressive management and less stringent follow up
Whole Earth Telescope observations of the pulsating subdwarf B star PG 0014+067
PG 0014+067 is one of the most promising pulsating subdwarf B stars for
seismic analysis, as it has a rich pulsation spectrum. The richness of its
pulsations, however, poses a fundamental challenge to understanding the
pulsations of these stars, as the mode density is too complex to be explained
only with radial and nonradial low degree (l < 3) p-modes without rotational
splittings. One proposed solution, for the case of PG 0014+067 in particular,
assigns some modes with high degree (l=3). On the other hand, theoretical
models of sdB stars suggest that they may retain rapidly rotating cores, and so
the high mode density may result from the presence of a few rotationally-split
triplet (l=1), quintuplet (l=2) modes, along with radial (l=0) p-modes. To
examine alternative theoretical models for these stars, we need better
frequency resolution and denser longitude coverage. Therefore, we observed this
star with the Whole Earth Telescope for two weeks in October 2004. In this
paper we report the results of Whole Earth Telescope observations of the
pulsating subdwarf B star PG 0014+067. We find that the frequencies seen in PG
0014+067 do not appear to fit any theoretical model currently available;
however, we find a simple empirical relation that is able to match all of the
