    Get PDF
In the maritime sector, many improvements are performed on ship propulsion system. The hybrid propulsion system (HPS) is one of the innovations in the marine sector, considering International Maritime Organization (IMO) energy efficiency measures. The main objectives of the HPS are reduction in fuel consumption, maintenance costs, and minimization of the emissions of gases that harm the environment. The IMO International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI “Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships” determines nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide, and particulate matter limits emitted from marine vessels. These limitations will be met with the HPS to be established on marine vessels. Batteries, an Energy Storage System (ESS), are used to drive electric motors, part of the HPS equipment. In this study, battery types are evaluated in terms of their chemical properties, capacities, volumes, weights, energies, specific energies, costs, and life cycle by TOPSIS method and the most suitable battery for the HPS is selected. According to the results, the highest rank (0.643127638) for the HPS is obtained from lithium iron phosphate (LFB) battery that has 200 Ah capacity, 30.55-liter volume, 27.7 kg weight, 92.42 Wh/kg energy density, 987 $/kWh cost, and 400~13,000 life cycle. This study will be a good source for researchers and maritime sector stakeholders, whose studies regard Energy Storage Systems, especially batteries on the HPS in marine vessels

MOLFPP reduces to an equivalent Multi Objective Linear Programming Problem (MOLPP). The resulting MOLPP is solved assuming that weights of these linear objective functions are equal and considering the sum of the these linear objective functions. The proposed solution to MOLFPP always yields efficient solution, even a strong-efficient solution. Therefore, the complexity in solving MOLFPP has reduced easy computational. To show the ability the proposed solution, three different numerical examples have been presented. The given examples are solved using optimization software WINQSB (Chang, 2001)

The existence of energy is essential to countries striving to survive, both socially and economically. In this context, countries establish different types of power plants and use alternative energy resource,s such as solar and wind power, to meet their energy needs. Establishing power plants and using alternative energy resources are tough for some regions, such as Middle Eastern, African, and Asian countries. Thereby Powerships have been developed due to the consideration that these countries suffer from energy deficiency and encounter difficulties in building land power plants. In this study, the emergence of Powerships, providing electricity to energy-deficient countries and the successful launch strategies, are investigated. A single revelatory case study concept is used to understand what exactly the Powerships are, where they operate, positive and negative situations encountered during operation, as well as economic benefits compared to other systems. In this context, together with the intensive literature review, semi-structured interview questions are prepared for several company officials and former employees and detailed evaluations are described in the Powerships operation process. Semi-structured interview questions results are evaluated and discussed with a view to understanding how the company has successfully launched its innovative product to the energy market. This article will, we hope, represent a significant resource for experts, academics, and companies working on floating energy power plants in the future

Background: Latent Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections may be reactive in consequence of immunosuppression. Recently, CMV-associated uveitis cases have also been reported in immunocompetent individuals. Aim: The aim of this study was to obtain epidemiological data by evaluating CMV DNA PCR results, clinical characteristics and risk factors of patients diagnosed with viral uveitis. Methods: Between the years 2011-2017, anterior chamber fluid samples of 35 patients with viral uveitis sent from the ophthalmology clinic to the Virology Laboratory were included in this study. CMV DNA real-time PCR results were evaluated. Results: CMV DNA positivity was detected in 9 (26%) of the 35 patients. CMV DNA positivity was highest (13%) in over 60 years (p=0.02). Acute recurrent uveitis in 44% (4/9) of patients, single eye involvement in 78% (7/9) and anterior uveitis in 44% (4/9) were found. Conclusion: In this study, CMV DNA positivity was detected in 26% of the patients with viral uveitis. Considering the presentations of a small number of cases related to CMV uveitis in our country, this study is important due to being the most comprehensive study in our country

Current orthopedic implants are not conducive for optimal integration of the biomaterial with newly-formed tissue (osseointegration) inside a patient’s body. In this study, medical-rade Ti-6Al-4V was used as a substrate due to its biocompatibility and ability to facilitate cellular adhesion and proliferation. Live cell imaging was conducted on bone marrow stromal cells, genetically modified to express the green fluorescent protein (GFP), from the 24-96 hours growth period, with the first 24 hours of growth being held inside a lab-scale incubator. Periodic images were recorded on nanopitted anodized and polished Ti-6Al-4V substrates to study how substratestiffness influences adhesion and proliferation. Collected images were analyzed for mitosis, adhesion, and filopodia-stretchability using ImageJ, an image processing program. Images were enhanced in order to perform cell counts at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours of growth. Continuous recordings were produced to account for the number of mitosis occurrences and cellular migration on each of the substrates. Based on the conducted experiments, it appears that polished Ti-6Al-4V has a higher cell adherence than “nanopitted” anodized surface and an improved rate of proliferation which may be because the cells once adhered on the nano-pitted surface have less ability to detach in-order to undergo mitosis.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/u_poster_2014/1004/thumbnail.jp

Objectives: Although well-defined principles of rational antimicrobial use are available, inappropriate prescribing patterns are reported worldwide. Accurate information on the usage of antimicrobials, including factors associated with and influencing their use, is valuable for improving the quality of prescription practices. Methods: In this cross-sectional point prevalence survey, data on patients hospitalized in 12 different children's hospitals were collected on a single day. Appropriateness of prescription was compared between the types of antimicrobials prescribed, indications, wards, and presence of/consultation with an infectious disease physician (IDP). Results: A total 711 of 1302 (54.6%) patients evaluated were receiving one or more antimicrobial drugs. The antimicrobial prescription rate was highest in pediatric intensive care (75.7%) and lowest in the surgery wards (37.0%). Of the 711 patients receiving antimicrobials, 332 patients (46.7%) were found to be receiving at least one inappropriately prescribed drug. Inappropriate use was most frequent in surgery wards (80.2%), while it was less common in oncology wards (31.8%; p < 0.001). Respiratory tract infection was the most common indication for antimicrobial use (29.4%). Inappropriate use was more common in deep-seated infections (54.7%) and respiratory infections (56.5%). Fluoroquinolones were used inappropriately more than any other drugs (81.8%, p = 0.021). Consultation with an IDP appears to increase appropriate antimicrobial use (p = 0.008). Conclusions: Inappropriate antimicrobial use remains a common problem in Turkish pediatric hospitals. Consultation with an IDP and prescribing antimicrobial drugs according to microbiological test results could decrease the inappropriate use of antimicrobials
