Fonseca’s will, in particular, which is published in this article, displays up to what point both these tendencies were present in their strategies to accumulate patrimony, social capital and to consolidate themselves in Rome, all the while maintaining family ties and a strong Iberian identity

    Continuous atom laser with Bose-Einstein condensates involving three-body interactions

    We demonstrate, through numerical simulations, the emission of a coherent continuous matter wave of constant amplitude from a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a shallow optical dipole trap. The process is achieved by spatial control of the variations of the scattering length along the trapping axis, including elastic three body interactions due to dipole interactions. In our approach, the outcoupling mechanism are atomic interactions and thus, the trap remains unaltered. We calculate analytically the parameters for the experimental implementation of this CW atom laser.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Anatomy of Monocotyledons: stems and rhizomes of land herbs used as medicinal in the Río de La Plata area (Argentina)

    Aerial stems of Cenchrus spinifexCav., Commelina erectaL., Sisyrinchium chilenseHook. subsp. chilense, and Tripogandra diuretica(Mart.) Handlos, and rhizomes of Arundo donax L., Cynodon dactylon(L.) Pers., and Kyllinga odorataVahl were studied. These organs are used in folk medicine in the Río de La Plata area. The objective was to get diagnostic characters to elaborate a key to distinguish the taxa from whole or fragmented caulinar samples. Conventional histological and microchemical methods were used. The main differential traits were found in epidermal cell shapes, position and stomata type, trichome types, distribution of fibers, characteristics of vascular bundles, and crystals. Every species gave positive reaction for starch, and for mucilages the reaction was positive in Commelinaceae species. Most of the species gave negative reaction for lipophilic and phenolic substances, however Kyllinga odoratarhizome showed interesting content of secretory substances and gave positive reaction for oils droplets

    Bird mortality related to collisions with ski–lift cables: do we estimate just the tip of the iceberg?

    Collisions with ski–lift cables are an important cause of death for grouse species living close to alpine ski resorts. As several biases may reduce the detection probability of bird carcasses, the mortality rates related to these collisions are generally underestimated. The possibility that injured birds may continue flying for some distance after striking cables represents a major source of error, known as crippling bias. Estimating the crippling losses resulting from birds dying far from the ski–lift corridors is difficult and it is usually assessed by systematic searches of carcasses on both sides of the ski–lifts. Using molecular tracking, we were able to demonstrate that a rock ptarmigan hen flew up to 600 m after striking a ski–lift cable, a distance preventing its detection by traditional carcasses surveys. Given the difficulty in conducting systematic searches over large areas surrounding the ski–lifts, only an experiment using radio–tagged birds would allow us to estimate the real mortality rate associated with cable collision

    Anaplasma marginale is the most prevalent tick-borne livestock pathogen with worldwide distribution. Bovine anaplasmosis is a significant threat to cattle industry. Anaplasmosis outbreaks in endemic areas are prevented via vaccination with live A. centrale produced in splenectomized calves. Since A. centrale live vaccine can carry other pathogens and cause disease in adult cattle, research efforts are directed to develop safe recombinant subunit vaccines. Previous work found that the subdominant proteins of A. marginale type IV secretion system (T4SS) and the subdominant elongation factor-Tu (Ef-Tu) were involved in the protective immunity against the experimental challenge in cattle immunized with the A. marginale outer membrane (OM). This study evaluated the immunogenicity and protection conferred by recombinant VirB9.1, VirB9.2, VirB10, VirB11, and Ef-Tu proteins cloned and expressed in E. coli. Twenty steers were randomly clustered into four groups (G) of five animals each. Cattle from G1 and G2 were immunized with a mixture of 50 μg of each recombinant protein with Quil A® or Montanide™ adjuvants, respectively. Cattle from G3 and G4 (controls) were immunized with Quil A and Montanide adjuvants, respectively. Cattle received four immunizations at three-week intervals and were challenged with 107 A. marginale-parasitized erythrocytes 42 days after the fourth immunization. After challenge, all cattle showed clinical signs, with a significant drop of packed cell volume and a significant increase of parasitized erythrocytes (p<0.05), requiring treatment with oxytetracycline to prevent death. The levels of IgG2 induced in the immunized groups did not correlate with the observed lack of protection. Additional strategies are required to evaluate the role of these proteins and their potential utility in the development of effective vaccines.EEA RafaelaFil: Sarli, Macarena.     Generation of broadband mid-IR and UV light in gas-filled single-ring hollow-core PCF

    We report generation of an ultrafast supercontinuum extending into the mid- infrared in gas-filled single-ring hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (SR-PCF) pumped by 1.7 μ\mum light from an optical parametric amplifier. The simple fiber structure offers shallow dispersion and flat transmission in the near and mid-infrared, enabling the generation of broadband spectra extending from 300 nm to 3.1 μ\mum, with a total energy of a few μ\muJ. In addition, we report the emission of ultraviolet dispersive waves whose frequency can be tuned simply by adjusting the pump wavelength. SR-PCF also provides an effective means of compressing and delivering tunable ultrafast pulses in the near and mid-infrared spectral regions.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Ferromagnetice exchange in bichloride bridged Cu(II) chains: magnetostructural correlations between ordered and disordered systems

    The synthesis, structure, magnetic properties, and theoretical analysis of a new phase of dichloro(2-thlaro-3-methylpyridine)copper(II) (2) and its isomorphous analogue dichloro(2bromo-3-methylpyridine)copper(II) (3) are reported. Both complexes crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbca and present square pyramidal Cu(II) ions bridged into chains by chloride ions with each,copper(II)-bearing a single pyridine ligand. Variable temperature magnetic Susceptibility measurements were well fit by a uniform one-dimensional ferromagnetic chain model with,2) J = 69.0(7) K, C = 0.487 emu-K/mol-Oe; 3, J = 73.9(4) K, C = 0.463 emu-K/mol-Oe = Hamiltonian). The experimental J-values were confirmed-via theOretical calculations. Comparison to a known disordered polymorph of dichloro(2-chloro-3-inethylpyridine)copper(II), 1, shows marked differences as there are significant antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor interactions, in 1 in addition to randomness induced by the disorder which provide a distinctly different magnetic response. The differences in magnetic behavior are attributed principally to the structural difference in the Cu(II) coordination sphere, 1 being significantly closer to trigonal-bipyramidal, whose difference changes both the nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions

    In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in Industrial Augmented Reality (IAR) due to its prominent role in the ongoing revolution known as Industry 4.0. For companies and industries it is essential to evaluate carefully which of the developed AR-based technologies to adopt, and when, for tasks such as training, maintenance, assistance, and collaborative design. There is also a wide array of hardware and software alternatives on the market, characterized by a significant heterogeneity in terms of functionalities, performance and cost. With this work, our objective is to study and compare some widely available devices and Software Development Kits (SDKs) for AR by leveraging a set of evaluation criteria derived from the actual literature which have been deemed capable to qualify the above assets as suitable for industrial applications. Such criteria include the operative range, robustness, accuracy and stability. Both marker-based and marker-less solutions have been considered, in order to investigate a wide range of possible use cases
