In doing this we provide a method for determiningthe composition multiplicities for some composition factors of tensor productsof simple modules with the wedge square of the dual natural module

    #EAPC versus #ESMO- comparative 2 year quantitative sentiment analysis of Twitter activity at EAPC and European Cancer Conferences

    Background: We collected public Twitter data from EAPC congresses in 2014 and 2015 and compared this with similar size European Oncology events (ESMO/ECC). This poster can only be accessed through Twitter on #EAPC2016TOP Aims: To analyse, quantify and benchmark use of #EAPC2014, #ESMO14, #EAPC2015, #ECC2015 hashtags on Twitter. Methods: An advanced Twitter search using the hashtags described in Aims was conducted by four reviewers independently. Data were collated manually, counted, compared and verified with a third party Twitter analysis tool,Symplur. A timeline was agreed: 7 days prior to start of first day of respective conference, and 7 days after last day of conference. Organisers were approached to ensure that no other hashtags had been circulated, to avoid missing data. Results: The results are displayed in table 1. Sentiment analysis on Twitter showed that conference attendees made mainly positive comments about events and talks. We further sub-categorized Tweets into ´Status update´, ´Slide/Poster Photo upload´,´Other Photo´ content, to further define how users were interacting. Conclusions: For EAPC alone between 2014 and 2015, this represents a year on year increase of 218% for original Tweets and 221% for Total Tweets. Compared to a similar size European cancer conference event, there is potential for an increase in numbers. Photo uploads were research slides and posters, publishing these to a vast audience and thus making data freely available to interested non-attenders worldwide. Pharmaceutical companies´ and charities´ Twitter accounts had some of the highest audience reach

    A framework for species distribution modelling with improved pseudo-absence generation

    Species distribution models (SDMs) are an important tool in biogeography and phylogeography studies, that most often require explicit absence information to adequately model the environmental space on which species can potentially inhabit. In the so called background pseudoabsences approach, absence locations are simulated in order to obtain a complete sample of the environment. Whilst the commonest approach is random sampling of the entire study region, in its multiple variants, its performance may not be optimal, and the method of generation of pseudoabsences is known to have a significant influence on the results obtained. Here, we compare a suite of classic (random sampling) and novel methods for pseudo-absence data generation and propose a generalizable three-step method combining environmental profiling with a new technique for background extent restriction. To this aim, we consider 11 phylogenetic groups of Oak (Quercus sp.) described in Europe. We evaluate the influence of different pseudo-absence types on model performance (area under the ROC curve), calibration (reliability diagrams) and the resulting suitability maps, using a cross-validation approach. Regardless of the modelling algorithm used, randomsampling models were outperformed by the methods that incorporate environmental profiling of the background, stressing the importance of the pseudo-absence generation techniques for the development of accurate and reliable SDMs. We also provide an integrated modelling framework implementing the methods tested in a software package for the open source R environment

    Circulating adiponectin levels are lower in Latino versus non-Latino white patients at risk for cardiovascular disease, independent of adiposity measures

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Latinos in the United States have a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes than non-Latino whites, even after controlling for adiposity. Decreased adiponectin is associated with insulin resistance and predicts T2DM, and therefore may mediate this ethnic difference. We compared total and high-molecular-weight (HMW) adiponectin in Latino versus white individuals, identified factors associated with adiponectin in each ethnic group, and measured the contribution of adiponectin to ethnic differences in insulin resistance.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We utilized cross-sectional data from subjects in the Latinos Using Cardio Health Actions to reduce Risk study. Participants were Latino (n = 119) and non-Latino white (n = 60) men and women with hypertension and at least one other risk factor for CVD (age 61 ± 10 yrs, 49% with T2DM), seen at an integrated community health and hospital system in Denver, Colorado. Total and HMW adiponectin was measured by RIA and ELISA respectively. Fasting glucose and insulin were used to calculate the homeostasis model insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR). Variables independently associated with adiponectin levels were identified by linear regression analyses. Adiponectin's contribution to ethnic differences in insulin resistance was assessed in multivariate linear regression models of Latino ethnicity, with logHOMA-IR as a dependent variable, adjusting for possible confounders including age, gender, adiposity, and renal function.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean adiponectin levels were lower in Latino than white patients (beta estimates: -4.5 (-6.4, -2.5), p < 0.001 and -1.6 (-2.7, -0.5), p < 0.005 for total and HMW adiponectin), independent of age, gender, BMI/waist circumference, thiazolidinedione use, diabetes status, and renal function. An expected negative association between adiponectin and waist circumference was seen among women and non-Latino white men, but no relationship between these two variables was observed among Latino men. Ethnic differences in logHOMA-IR were no longer observed after controlling for adiponectin levels.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Among patients with CVD risk, total and HMW adiponectin is lower in Latinos, independent of adiposity and other known regulators of adiponectin. Ethnic differences in adiponectin regulation may exist and future research in this area is warranted. Adiponectin levels accounted for the observed variability in insulin resistance, suggesting a contribution of decreased adiponectin to insulin resistance in Latino populations.</p

    Genome analysis and physiological comparison of Alicycliphilus denitrificans strains BC and K601T

    The genomes of the Betaproteobacteria Alicycliphilus denitrificans strains BC and K601T have been sequenced to get insight into the physiology of the two strains. Strain BC degrades benzene with chlorate as electron acceptor. The cyclohexanol-degrading denitrifying strain K601T is not able to use chlorate as electron acceptor, while strain BC cannot degrade cyclohexanol. The 16S rRNA sequences of strains BC and K601T are identical and the fatty acid methyl ester patterns of the strains are similar. Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) analysis of predicted open reading frames of both strains showed most hits with Acidovorax sp. JS42, a bacterium that degrades nitro-aromatics. The genomes include strain-specific plasmids (pAlide201 in strain K601T and pAlide01 and pAlide02 in strain BC). Key genes of chlorate reduction in strain BC were located on a 120 kb megaplasmid (pAlide01), which was absent in strain K601T. Genes involved in cyclohexanol degradation were only found in strain K601T. Benzene and toluene are degraded via oxygenase-mediated pathways in both strains. Genes involved in the meta-cleavage pathway of catechol are present in the genomes of both strains. Strain BC also contains all genes of the ortho-cleavage pathway.     Genomic investigations of unexplained acute hepatitis in children

    Since its first identification in Scotland, over 1,000 cases of unexplained paediatric hepatitis in children have been reported worldwide, including 278 cases in the UK1. Here we report an investigation of 38 cases, 66 age-matched immunocompetent controls and 21 immunocompromised comparator participants, using a combination of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and immunohistochemical methods. We detected high levels of adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) DNA in the liver, blood, plasma or stool from 27 of 28 cases. We found low levels of adenovirus (HAdV) and human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) in 23 of 31 and 16 of 23, respectively, of the cases tested. By contrast, AAV2 was infrequently detected and at low titre in the blood or the liver from control children with HAdV, even when profoundly immunosuppressed. AAV2, HAdV and HHV-6 phylogeny excluded the emergence of novel strains in cases. Histological analyses of explanted livers showed enrichment for T cells and B lineage cells. Proteomic comparison of liver tissue from cases and healthy controls identified increased expression of HLA class 2, immunoglobulin variable regions and complement proteins. HAdV and AAV2 proteins were not detected in the livers. Instead, we identified AAV2 DNA complexes reflecting both HAdV-mediated and HHV-6B-mediated replication. We hypothesize that high levels of abnormal AAV2 replication products aided by HAdV and, in severe cases, HHV-6B may have triggered immune-mediated hepatic disease in genetically and immunologically predisposed children

    Detection of specific solvent rearrangement regions of an enzyme: NMR and ITC studies with aminoglycoside phosphotransferase(3 ')-IIIa

    This work describes differential effects of solvent in complexes of the aminoglycoside phosphotransferase(3')-IIIa (APH) with different aminoglycosides and the detection of change in solvent structure at specific sites away from substrates. Binding of kanamycins to APH occurs with a larger negative Delta H in H2O relative to D2O (Delta Delta H(H2O-D2O) < 0), while the reverse is true for neomycins. Unusually large negative Delta C-p values were observed for binding of aminoglycosides to APH. Delta C-p for the APH-neomycin complex was -1.6 kcal(.)mol(-1.)deg(-1). A break at 30 degrees C was observed in the APH-kanamycin complex yielding Delta C-p values of -0.7 kcal(.)mol(-1.)deg(-1) and -3.8 kcal(.)mol(-1.)deg(-1) below and above 30 degrees C, respectively. Neither the change in cessible surface area (Delta ASA) nor contributions from heats of ionization were sufficient to explain the large negative Delta C-p values. Most significantly, N-15-H-1 HSQC experiments showed that temperature-dependent shifts of the backkbone amide protons of Leu 88, Ser 91, Cys 98, and Leu143 revealed a break at 30 C only in the APH-kanamycin complex in spectra collected between 21 degrees C and 38 degrees C. These amino acids represent solvent reorganization sites that experience a change in solvent structure in their immediate environment as structurally different ligands bind to the enzyme. These residues were away from the substrate binding site and distributed in three hydrophobic patches in APH. Overall, our results show that a large number of factors affect Delta C-p and binding of structurally different ligand groups cause different solvent structure in the active site as well as differentially affecting specific sites away from the ligand binding site
