EuroSpine Task Force on Research: support for spine researchers
In recognition of the value of research to the practice of spine care, Federico Balagué and Ferran Pellisé, at the time President and Secretary for EuroSpine, asked Margareta Nordin to set up a Task Force on Research (TFR) for EuroSpine during summer 2011. The concept was to stimulate and facilitate a research community within the society, through two main functions: (1) distribution of EuroSpine funds to researchers; (2) develop and deliver research training/education courses. The universe dynamics in the tachyon cosmology with non-minimal coupling to matter
Recently, the tachyon cosmology has been represented as dark energy model to
support the current acceleration of the universe without phantom crossing. In
this paper, we study the dynamics of the tachyon cosmology in which the field
plays the role of tachyon field and also non--minimally coupled to the matter
lagrangian. The model shows current universe acceleration and also phantom
crossing in the future. Two cosmological tests are also performed to validate
the model; the difference in the distance modulus and the model independent

NTT and NOT spectroscopy of SDSS-II supernovae
Context. The SDSS-II Supernova Survey, conducted between 2005 and 2007, was
designed to detect a large number of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) around z~0.2,
the redshift "gap" between low-z and high-z SN searches. The survey has
provided multi-band photometric lightcurves for variable targets, and SN
candidates were scheduled for spectroscopic observations, primarily to provide
SN classification and accurate redshifts. We present SN spectra obtained in
2006 and 2007 using the NTT and the NOT. Aims. We provide an atlas of SN
spectra in the range z =0.03-0.32 that complements the well-sampled lightcurves
from SDSS-II in the forthcoming three-year SDSS SN cosmology analysis. The
sample can, for example, be used for spectral studies of SNe Ia, which are
critical for understanding potential systematic effects when SNe are used to
determine cosmological distances. Methods. The spectra were reduced in a
uniform manner, and special care was taken in estimating the uncertainties for
the different processing steps. Host-galaxy light was subtracted when possible
and the SN type fitted using the SuperNova IDentification code (SNID). We also
present comparisons between spectral and photometric dating using SALT
lightcurve fits to the photometry from SDSS-II, as well as the global
distribution of our sample in terms of the lightcurve parameters: stretch and
colour. Results. We report new spectroscopic data from 141 SNe Ia, mainly
between -9 and +15 days from lightcurve maximum, including a few cases of
multi-epoch observations. This homogeneous, host-galaxy subtracted, SN Ia
spectroscopic sample is among the largest such data sets and unique in its
redshift interval. The sample includes two potential SN 1991T-like SNe (SN
2006on and SN 2007ni) and one potential SN 2002cx-like SN (SN 2007ie). In
addition, the new compilation includes spectra from 23 confirmed Type II and 8

"Taste Stripsâ - A rapid, lateralized, gustatory bedside identification test based on impregnated filter papers
Objective : To elaborate normative values for a clinical psychophysical taste test ("Taste Stripsâ). Background : The "Taste Stripsâ are a psychophysical chemical taste test. So far, no definitive normative data had been published and only a fairly small sample size has been investigated. In light of this shortcoming for this easy, reliable and quick taste testing device, we attempted to provide normative values suitable for the clinical use. Setting : Normative value acquisition study, multicenter study. Methods : The investigation involved 537 participants reporting a normal sense of smell and taste (318 female, 219 male, mean age 44 years, age range 18-87 years). The taste test was based on spoonshaped filter paper strips ("Taste Stripsâ) impregnated with the four (sweet, sour, salty, and bitter) taste qualities in four different concentrations. The strips were placed on the left or right side of the anterior third of the extended tongue, resulting in a total of 32 trials. With their tongue still extended, patients had to identify the taste from a list of four descriptors, i. e., sweet, sour, salty, and bitter (multiple forcedchoice). To obtain an impression of overall gustatory function, the number of correctly identified tastes was summed up for a "taste scoreâ. Results : Taste function decreased significantly with age. Women exhibited significantly higher taste scores than men which was true for all age groups. The taste score at the 10th percentile was selected as a cut-off value to distinguish normogeusia from hypogeusia. Results from a small series of patients with ageusia confirmed the clinical usefulness of the proposed normative values. Standardizing Type Ia Supernova Absolute Magnitudes Using Gaussian Process Data Regression
We present a novel class of models for Type Ia supernova time-evolving
spectral energy distributions (SED) and absolute magnitudes: they are each
modeled as stochastic functions described by Gaussian processes. The values of
the SED and absolute magnitudes are defined through well-defined regression
prescriptions, so that data directly inform the models. As a proof of concept,
we implement a model for synthetic photometry built from the spectrophotometric
time series from the Nearby Supernova Factory. Absolute magnitudes at peak
brightness are calibrated to 0.13 mag in the -band and to as low as 0.09 mag
in the blueshifted -band, where the dispersion includes
contributions from measurement uncertainties and peculiar velocities. The
methodology can be applied to spectrophotometric time series of supernovae that
span a range of redshifts to simultaneously standardize supernovae together

The Impact of Olfactory Disorders in the United Kingdom
Olfactory disorders are believed to affect 5% of the general population and have been shown to bear significant psychosocial consequences to sufferers. Although more common than blindness and profound deafness in the United Kingdom, the impact of these disorders has not been assessed to date and the plight of British patients has yet to be quantified. In 2012, a patient support organization, Fifth Sense, was founded to provide information and support to sufferers of chemosensory disorders. Following a recent members conference, a survey of the membership was conducted anonymously using a series of questions based on an existing olfactory disorders questionnaire. From 496 respondents, this has demonstrated high rates of depression (43%) and anxiety (45%), impairment of eating experience (92%), isolation (57%), and relationship difficulties (54%). Women appear to have significantly more issues than men in terms of social and domestic dysfunction relating to olfactory loss (P = 0.01). Qualitative disorders also affected more than 1 in 5 members with parosmia reported in 19% and phantosmia in 24%. A prospective cohort study comparing the reactogenicity of trivalent influenza vaccine in pregnant and non-pregnant women
Background: Influenza vaccination during pregnancy can prevent serious illness in expectant mothers and provide protection to newborns; however, historically uptake has been limited due to a number of factors, including safety concerns. Symptomatic complaints are common during pregnancy and may be mistakenly associated with reactions to trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV). To investigate this, we compared post-vaccination events self-reported by pregnant women to events reported by non-pregnant women receiving TIV.
Methods: A prospective cohort of 1,086 pregnant women and 314 non-pregnant female healthcare workers (HCWs) who received TIV between March-May 2014 were followed-up seven days post-vaccination to assess local and systemic adverse events following immunisation (AEFIs). Women were surveyed by text message regarding perceived reactions to TIV. Those reporting an AEFI completed an interview by telephone or mobile phone to ascertain details. Logistic regression models adjusting for age and residence were used to compare reactions reported by pregnant women and non-pregnant HCWs.
Results: Similar proportions of pregnant women and non-pregnant, female HCWs reported â„1 reaction following vaccination with TIV (13.0% and 17.3%, respectively; OR = 1.2 [95% CI: 0.8-1.8]). Non-pregnant, female HCWs were more likely to report fever or headache compared to pregnant women (OR: 4.6 [95% CI 2.1-10.3] and OR: 2.2 [95% CI 1.0-4.6], respectively). No other significant differences in reported symptoms were observed. No serious vaccine-associated adverse events were reported, and less than 2% of each group sought medical advice for a reaction.
Conclusions: We found no evidence suggesting pregnant women are more likely to report adverse events following influenza vaccination when compared to non-pregnant female HCWs of similar age, and in some cases, pregnant women reported significantly fewer adverse events. These results further support the safety of TIV administered in pregnant women
Cosmic Dynamics in the Chameleon Cosmology
We study in this paper chameleon cosmology applied to
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space, which gives rise to the equation of state
(EoS) parameter larger than -1 in the past and less than -1 today, satisfying
current observations. We also study cosmological constraints on the model using
the time evolution of the cosmological redshift of distant sources which
directly probes the expansion history of the universe. Due to the evolution of
the universe's expansion rate, the model independent Cosmological Redshift
Drift (CRD)test is expected to experience a small, systematic drift as a
function of time. The model is supported by the observational data obtained

Measuring cosmic bulk flows with Type Ia Supernovae from the Nearby Supernova Factory
Context. Our Local Group of galaxies appears to be moving relative to the
cosmic microwave background with the source of the peculiar motion still
uncertain. While in the past this has been studied mostly using galaxies as
distance indicators, the weight of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) has increased
recently with the continuously improving statistics of available low-redshift
supernovae.
Aims. We measured the bulk flow in the nearby universe ()
using 117 SNe Ia observed by the Nearby Supernova Factory, as well as the
Union2 compilation of SN Ia data already in the literature.
Methods. The bulk flow velocity was determined from SN data binned in
redshift shells by including a coherent motion (dipole) in a cosmological fit.
Additionally, a method of spatially smoothing the Hubble residuals was used to
verify the results of the dipole fit. To constrain the location and mass of a
potential mass concentration (e.g., the Shapley supercluster) responsible for
the peculiar motion, we fit a Hubble law modified by adding an additional mass
concentration.
Results. The analysis shows a bulk flow that is consistent with the direction
of the CMB dipole up to , thereby doubling the volume over which
conventional distance measures are sensitive to a bulk flow. We see no
significant turnover behind the center of the Shapley supercluster. A simple
attractor model in the proximity of the Shapley supercluster is only marginally
consistent with our data, suggesting the need for another, more distant source.
In the redshift shell , we constrain the bulk flow velocity to
(68% confidence level) for the direction of the CMB
dipole, in contradiction to recent claims of the existence of a large-amplitude

Evidence of Environmental Dependencies of Type Ia Supernovae from the Nearby Supernova Factory indicated by Local H{\alpha}
(Abridged) We study the host galaxy regions in close proximity to Type Ia
supernovae (SNe Ia) to analyze relations between the properties of SN Ia events
and environments most similar to where their progenitors formed. We focus on
local H\alpha\ emission as an indicator of young environments. The Nearby
Supernova Factory has obtained flux-calibrated spectral timeseries for SNe Ia
using integral field spectroscopy, allowing the simultaneous measurement of the
SN and its immediate vicinity. For 89 SNe Ia we measure H\alpha\ emission
tracing ongoing star formation within a 1 kpc radius around each SN. This
constitutes the first direct study of the local environment for a large sample
of SNe Ia also having accurate luminosity, color and stretch measurements. We
find that SNe Ia with local H\alpha\ emission are redder by 0.036+/-0.017 mag,
and that the previously-noted correlation between stretch and host mass is
entirely driven by the SNe Ia coming from passive regions. Most importantly,
the mean standardized brightness for SNe Ia with local H\alpha\ emission is
0.094+/-0.031 mag fainter than for those without. This offset arises from a
bimodal structure in the Hubble residuals, that also explains the
previously-known host-mass bias. We combine this bimodality with the cosmic
star-formation rate to predict changes with redshift in the mean SN Ia
brightness and the host-mass bias. This change is confirmed using high-redshift
SNe Ia from the literature. These environmental dependences point to remaining
systematic errors in SNe Ia standardization. The observed brightness offset is
predicted to cause a significant bias in measurements of the dark energy
equation of state. Recognition of these effects offers new opportunities to
improve SNe Ia as cosmological probes - e.g. SNe Ia having local H\alpha\
emission are more homogeneous, having a brightness dispersion of 0.105+/-0.012
