Type 2 diabetes Mellitus is related to the increase prevalence of mental health problems. The aim of this study was to a) verify the anxiety and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of diabetics with and without symptoms of depression; b) correlate HRQoL with blood glucose levels and abdominal adiposity and c) investigate if there is difference between genders. Ninety-six individuals, with an average age of 56.2 ± 9.6 years, men and women, carried out anthropometric measure: waist circumference (WC), body mass index, evaluation of blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and fasting blood glucose. The Beck Depression Inventory, the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory and the SF-36 Questionnaire verified the presence of depressive symptoms, the anxiety level and the HRQoL respectively. Most individuals were overweight (78%) and altered WC (72.9%). The depression’s prevalence was 34.1%, and the levels of trait and state anxiety were 63.3% and 77%. Individuals with depression had worse HRQoL, anxiety (trait) and altered WC, but without differences in HR and BP. Men had better HRQoL and lower levels of depression than women. Cardiometabolic variables (abdominal adiposity and blood glucose) correlated with altered HRQoL, despite gender. In men, correlations between glycemia and functional capacity, and HR with mental health were observed. In women, anxiety levels correlated with functional capacity and abdominal adiposity. Diabetes is directly related to biopsychosocial factors, mainly HRQoL and depression. In addition, depressive diabetics have worse HRQoL, more anxiety and, in men, changes in body composition.O diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 está relacionado ao aumento da prevalência de problemas de saúde mental. Music and software piracy : issues and solutions for music teachers and media intensive educators

    Get PDF
The rampant piracy of digital materials is not just a problem for the individual home user. In today\u27s world it is increasingly a concern for educators and their school district as a whole. Many recent court actions have been brought against school districts based the illegal use of unlicensed software and other copyrighted materials. This project presents the issues of music and software piracy and the legalities of the United States Copyright Act. It presents common examples for use in the music or media intensive classroom, as well as legal usage requirements including the payment of royalties and purchase of recording or distribution licenses. Also covered are methods and suggestions on how faculty members can ensure that their school is compliant with current law and beyond the scope of legal actions that can adversely affect the district both financially and in the realm of public relations

Molecular Characterization Of Intestinal Protozoa In Two Poor Communities In The State Of São Paulo, Brazil.

Several species of protozoa cause acute or chronic gastroenteritis in humans, worldwide. The burden of disease is particularly high among children living in developing areas of the world, where transmission is favored by lower hygienic standards and scarce availability of safe water. However, asymptomatic infection and polyparasitism are also commonly observed in poor settings. Here, we investigated the prevalence of intestinal protozoa in two small fishing villages, Porto Said (PS) and Santa Maria da Serra (SM), situated along the river Tietê in the State of São Paolo, Brazil. The villages lack basic public infrastructure and services, such as roads, public water supply, electricity and public health services. Multiple fecal samples were collected from 88 individuals in PS and from 38 individuals in SM, who were asymptomatic at the time of sampling and had no recent history of diarrheal disease. To gain insights into potential transmission routes, 49 dog fecal samples (38 from PS and 11 from SM) and 28 river water samples were also collected. All samples were tested by microscopy and PCR was used to genotype Giardia duodenalis, Blastocystis sp., Dientamoeba fragilis and Cryptosporidium spp. By molecular methods, the most common human parasite was Blastocystis sp. (prevalence, 45% in PS and 71% in SM), followed by D. fragilis (13.6% in PS, and 18.4% in SM) and G. duodenalis (18.2% in PS and 7.9% in SM); Cryptosporidium spp. were not detected. Sequence analysis revealed large genetic variation among Blastocystis samples, with subtypes (STs) 1 and 3 being predominant, and with the notable absence of ST4. Among G. duodenalis samples, assemblages A and B were detected in humans, whereas assemblages A, C and D were found in dogs. Finally, all D. fragilis samples from humans were genotype 1. A single dog was found infected with Cryptosporidium canis. River water samples were negative for the investigated parasites. This study showed a high carriage of intestinal parasites in asymptomatic individuals from two poor Brazilian villages, and highlighted a large genetic variability of Blastocystis spp. and G. duodenalis.810

ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest

Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. Fermented or unfermented milk using Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019: Technological approach determines the probiotic modulation of mucosal cellular immunity

    No full text
Functional foods are important sources of probiotic delivery, mainly by fermentedmilk products. The physiological benefits attributed to bifido bacteria are their abilities to interfere with the adhesion of pathogenic species to surfaces of intestinal cells, and to enhance the host's immune function through their metabolic activities. However, the effects of a technological approach ? fermentation or addition of probiotic in milk, and its efficacy in health are rarely taken into consideration. Hence, fermented or unfermented milk using Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 were administered to BALB/c mice for 14 days. After that, the architecture of the gut was histologically investigated, and the related immune cells were examined by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. Increase in mucus and cellularity production, changes in immune pattern and preservation of mucosal epithelia in health BALB/c mice were observed only in the fermentedmilk group. This suggested that changes in functionality of bifidobacteria and/or themetabolites produced by the fermentation process are the keys to improving beneficial effects in the host of the gut mucosa.Fil: Bogsan, Cristina Stewart Bittencourt.
