Comparative Microbial Dynamics in Crassostrea virginica and Crassostrea ariakensis
Considerations to introduce the Suminoe or Asian oyster Crassostrea ariakensis along the East Coast have raised many questions regarding ecology, economics, and human health. To date, research has focused primarily on the ecological and socioeconomic implications of this initiative, yet few studies have assessed its potential
impact on public health. Our work compares the rates of bioaccumulation, depuration and post harvest decay of indicator organisms (such as E. coli) and Vibrio sp. between
Crassostrea virginica and Crassostrea ariakensis in the laboratory. Preliminary results suggest that the rates of bioaccumulation of E. coli in Crassostrea ariakensis were
significantly lower than those for Crassostrea virginica, depuration of E. coli was variable between the two species, and Crassostrea ariakensis post harvest decay rates of
Vibrio sp. were significantly lower than Crassostrea virginica. This research provides coastal managers with insight into the response of Crassostrea ariakensis to bacteria, an important consideration for determining appropriate management strategies for this species. The rational development of molecularly imprinted polymer-based sensors for protein detection.
The detection of specific proteins as biomarkers of disease, health status,
environmental monitoring, food quality, control of fermenters and civil defence
purposes means that biosensors for these targets will become increasingly more
important. Among the technologies used for building specific recognition
properties, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are attracting much attention.
In this critical review we describe many methods used for imprinting recognition
for protein targets in polymers and their incorporation with a number of
transducer platforms with the aim of identifying the most promising approaches
for the preparation of MIP-based protein sensors (277 references)
Interim Report on S3D/LEAPS Integration
The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division has created the Leading Edge Architecture for Prototyping Systems, or LEAPS, as the data repository for ship design, and a significant number of the early-stage ship design tools interface directly or through a translator with LEAPS. Separately, the Office of Naval Research has funded Smart Ship Systems Design (S3D), a ship design tool effort that expands the Navy’s toolkit to include simulation and distributed system design among other capabilities. The current project will integrate S3D with LEAPS. This report provides an interim status report on progress for the integration project. The project plan and use case are described, underlying terms are defined and correlated between the two databases, and the initial version of the translator code is described
Post-graduate education, training and extension at Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Cochin
In view of the increasing demand for trained personnel to meet the requirements of mariculture and brackishwater culture activities in
the country, the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute took steps to institute a post-graduate education programme In mariculture at the
institute, leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees awarded by the Cochin University of Science and Technology. Through this programme a
number of post-graduates have been turned out in the subject during the past seven years. The students were given both theoretical and practical
instructions in different aspects of mariculture including basic subjects like physiology, nutrition, genetics and pathology. The Scientists of the
Institute constitute the faculty for the programme and a number of members of the faculty have also been trained abroad in different specialisations.
The Programme also had the advantage of consultants from other countries who have contributed greatly to its improvement and also in the
development of Infrastructural facilities at the Institute. As a result of the consultancy, a number of manuals on special subjects have also been
published. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra and the Trainers' Training Centre handle a number of courses at the farmers level and at the trainers level
based on the technologies developed at the Institute. In addition, an integrated programme of training including subjects in agriculture, animal
husbandry and home management is also conducted
Bifurcations of discrete breathers in a diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain
Discrete breathers are time-periodic, spatially localized solutions of the
equations of motion for a system of classical degrees of freedom interacting on
a lattice. Such solutions are investigated for a diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam
chain, i. e., a chain of alternate heavy and light masses coupled by anharmonic
forces. For hard interaction potentials, discrete breathers in this model are
known to exist either as ``optic breathers'' with frequencies above the optic
band, or as ``acoustic breathers'' with frequencies in the gap between the
acoustic and the optic band. In this paper, bifurcations between different
types of discrete breathers are found numerically, with the mass ratio m and
the breather frequency omega as bifurcation parameters. We identify a period
tripling bifurcation around optic breathers, which leads to new breather
solutions with frequencies in the gap, and a second local bifurcation around
acoustic breathers. These results provide new breather solutions of the FPU
system which interpolate between the classical acoustic and optic modes. The
two bifurcation lines originate from a particular ``corner'' in parameter space
(omega,m). As parameters lie near this corner, we prove by means of a center
manifold reduction that small amplitude solutions can be described by a
four-dimensional reversible map. This allows us to derive formally a continuum
limit differential equation which characterizes at leading order the

As a topographic modelling technique, structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry combines the utility of digital photogrammetry with a flexibility and ease of use derived from multi-view computer vision methods. In conjunction with the rapidly increasing availability of imagery, particularly from unmanned aerial vehicles, SfM photogrammetry represents a powerful tool for geomorphological research. However, to fully realize this potential, its application must be carefully underpinned by photogrammetric considerations, surveys should be reported in sufficient detail to be repeatable (if practical) and results appropriately assessed to understand fully the potential errors involved. To deliver these goals, robust survey and reporting must be supported through (i) using appropriate survey design, (ii) applying suitable statistics to identify systematic error (bias) and to estimate precision within results, and (iii) propagating uncertainty estimates into the final data products

Assessing the farm-scale impacts of cover crops and non-inversion tillage regimes on nutrient losses from an arable catchment
The efficacy of cover crops and non-inversion tillage regimes at minimising farm-scale nutrient losses were assessed across a large, commercial arable farm in Norfolk, UK. The trial area, covering 143 ha, was split into three blocks: winter fallow with mouldboard ploughing (Block J); shallow non-inversion tillage with a winter oilseed radish (Raphanus sativus) cover crop (Block P); and direct drilling with a winter oilseed radish cover crop (Block L). Soil, water and vegetation chemistry across the trial area were monitored over the 2012/13 (pre-trial), 2013/14 (cover crops and non-inversion tillage) and 2014/15 (non-inversion tillage only) farm years. Results revealed oilseed radish reduced nitrate (NO3¬¬-N) leaching losses in soil water by 75–97% relative to the fallow block, but had no impact upon phosphorus (P) losses. Corresponding reductions in riverine NO3¬¬-N concentrations were not observed, despite the trial area covering 20% of the catchment. Mean soil NO3¬¬-N concentrations were reduced by ~77% at 60–90 cm depth beneath the cover crop, highlighting the ability of deep rooting oilseed radish to scavenge nutrients from deep within the soil profile. Alone, direct drilling and shallow non-inversion tillage were ineffective at reducing soil water NO3¬¬-N and P concentrations relative to conventional ploughing. Applying starter fertiliser to the cover crop increased radish biomass and nitrogen (N) uptake, but resulted in net N accumulation within the soil. There was negligible difference between the gross margins of direct drilling (£731 ha-1) and shallow non-inversion tillage (£758 ha-1) with a cover crop and conventional ploughing with fallow (£745 ha-1), demonstrating farm productivity can be maintained whilst mitigating diffuse pollution. The results presented here support the wider adoption of winter oilseed radish cover crops to reduce NO3¬¬-N leaching losses in arable systems, but caution that it may take several years before catchment-scale impacts downstream are detected
Variability between human experts and artificial intelligence in identification of anatomical structures by ultrasound in regional anaesthesia: a framework for evaluation of assistive artificial intelligence
Background: ScanNavTM Anatomy Peripheral Nerve Block (ScanNav™) is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based device that produces a colour overlay on real-time B-mode ultrasound to highlight key anatomical structures for regional anaesthesia. This study compares consistency of identification of sono-anatomical structures between expert ultrasonographers and ScanNav™.
Methods: Nineteen experts in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia (UGRA) annotated 100 structures in 30 ultrasound videos across six anatomical regions. These annotations were compared with each other to produce a quantitative assessment of the level of agreement amongst human experts. The AI colour overlay was then compared with all expert annotations. Differences in human–human and human–AI agreement are presented for each structure class (artery, muscle, nerve, fascia/serosal plane) and structure. Clinical context is provided through subjective assessment data from UGRA experts.
Results: For human–human and human–AI annotations, agreement was highest for arteries (mean Dice score 0.88/0.86), then muscles (0.80/0.77), and lowest for nerves (0.48/0.41). Wide discrepancy exists in consistency for different structures, both with human–human and human–AI comparisons; highest for sartorius muscle (0.91/0.92) and lowest for the radial nerve (0.21/0.27).
Conclusions: Human experts and the AI system both showed the same pattern of agreement in sono-anatomical structure identification. The clinical significance of the differences presented must be explored; however the perception that human expert opinion is uniform must be challenged. Elements of this assessment framework could be used for other devices to allow consistent evaluations that inform clinical training and practice. Anaesthetists should be actively engaged in the development and adoption of new AI technology
