Highlights include: 1994 was the first year in which any member of the University community could be awarded the 30 year honor. Last year. Registrar Douglas Bohn and Professor Maria Toiriera were handed medals for their service. This year Professor of Mathematics Raoul DeVilliers and Professor of Art Virginia Zic will receive 30 year medals -- Twelve faculty members, representing all disciplines, have become involved in a new Writing Advisory Board. Director of Freshman Communications Dr. Alison Warriner formed the board with the future of writing instruction at Sacred Heart University in mind. The Writing Advisory Board is currently discussing options to bring a writing-across-the-curriculum (WAC) program to SHU --Four professors take sabbatical: professors will be involved in projects designed to enhance their effectiveness as university faculty. Associate Professor of philosophy, Dr. Edward A. Papa, in his eighth year with the University will be writing. Dr. Gary L. Rose, professor of political science, will be completing his fourth book The American presidency under siege. After 29 years with the University, Associate Professor of biology. Dr. Carol Schofield will undertake the task of redesigning the University’s anatomy and physiology laboratories, using a multi-media interactive approach to learning. Ninth year history professor Dr. Thomas Curran will be involved in several research projects. His primary focus will be on revising his dissertation, “Education and Society in Republican China,” which deals with the changing status of intellectuals --Professor Jonathan Matte makes Math magnificent

Bridging the gap between ecosystem service indicators and ecosystem accounting in Finland

    Get PDF
In this paper, we examine how progress on ecosystem service indicators could contribute to ecosystem accounting within the scope of environmental-economic accounting in Finland. We propose an integration framework and examine the integration of ecosystem service indicators into environmental-economic accounting with two case studies relevant for Finland: (1) water-related ecosystem services and (2) the ecosystem services of fish provisioning in marine ecosystems. In light of these case studies, we evaluate the relevance of existing Finnish ecosystem service indicators, the data availability for ecosystem accounting in Finland, and the applicability of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting o Experimental Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EEA) framework to integrate Finnish ecosystem service indicators and other relevant data into environmental-economic accounts. The results indicate that the present ecosystem service indicators can assist in creating a basis for ecosystem accounting, but the indicators require further elaboration to be more compatible with the existing environmental-economic accounting system.Peer reviewe

International Fisheries Management and Recreational Benefits: The Case of Baltic Salmon

    Get PDF
This article studies how accounting for the benefits of recreational fisheries affects the formation and stability of an international fisheries agreement (IFA) on the management of Baltic salmon stocks. The interaction between four countries is modelled through a partition function game, under two scenarios. In the first scenario, countries take their participation decision for the IFA based only on the net present value of profits from commercial fisheries. In the second scenario, the net present value of the recreational benefits from angling is also considered. The results show that accounting for recreational benefits leads to the formation of the grand coalition, whereas only partial cooperation occurs when payoffs are confined to profits from commercial fisheries

Opas perustuu kaivannaisjätteiden hallinnan parhaita käyttökelpoisia tekniikoita koskevaan vertailuasiakirjaan "Best Available Techniques Reference Document for the Management of Waste from Extractive Industries” ja Suomen kansallisiin ohjeistuksiin, oppaisiin sekä lainsäädäntöön.

Immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases in Finnish pediatric healthcare workers in 2015

Healthcare workers (HCWs) pose a risk to themselves and their patients if not protected against vaccine preventable diseases. Alarmingly, lacking immunity has been reported in several studies. We assessed the immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases in 157 pediatric HCWs in Helsinki Children's Hospital. The HCWs enrolled answered a questionnaire and gave a serum sample. Antibodies were measured with EIA against MMR-diseases, tetanus and diphtheria toxins, Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis A (HAV), varicella zoster and pertussis toxin. Neutralizing antibodies against poliovirus 1, 2 and 3 were measured. All of the HCWs had antibodies against tetanus and 89.8% against diphtheria. All had measurable levels of polio antibodies to all three polioviruses. 41% had suboptimal levels of antibodies against at least one of the antigens tested: MMR-viruses, diphtheria, HBV or polio. Measles, mumps and rubella antibodies were detectable in 81.5%, 89.2% and 93%, respectively. Only one HCW had no varicella-antibodies. Hepatitis B surface antibodies (HBsAb) were detected in 89.8% of the nurses. 67.5% had HAV-antibodies. A poor correlation between detected antibody levels and reported vaccination history was noticed, indicating a need for a universal record system for registering the vaccines given to each individual. The development of narrative productivity, syntactic complexity, referential cohesion and event content in four- to eight-year-old Finnish children

    No full text
This study focuses on the development of narrative structure and the relationship between narrative productivity and event content. A total of 172 Finnish children aged between four and eight participated. Their picture-elicited narrations were analysed for productivity, syntactic complexity, referential cohesion and event content. Each measure showed a developmental trend. Concerning consecutive age groups, significant differences were observed between four- and five-year-olds in productivity and event content and between five- and six-year-olds in referential cohesion. Multiple regression analysis showed that the relationship between productivity and event content was important, and especially the number of different word tokens proved to be useful in explaining the event content, whereas the number of communication units did not. This suggests that some productivity measures should be interpreted with caution
