Systems of possibilistic regressions: a case study in ecological inference

    Get PDF
This work introduces how possibilistic regression can be used in the case of non symmetrical triangular membership functions, building a system of regressions, so that suitable restrictions for each particular problem can be incorporated. We apply this methodology to the problem of ecological inference, in particular to the estimation of the electoral transition matrix. An experimentation with several examples shows the benefits of the new approach

Context. Conceptually reconstructing the physical conditions in relativistic jets, given the observed electromagnetic spectrum, is a complex inverse problem. Aims. We aim to improve our understanding of the mechanisms operating in relativistic jets by modeling their broadband electromagnetic spectrum. Methods. We develop an inhomogeneous jet model where the injection of relativistic primary and secondary particles takes place in a spatially extended region. We calculate the contribution of all particles species to the jet emissivity by several radiative processes, and assess the effect of gamma-ray absorption in internal and external photon fields. A number of specific models with different parameters are computed to explore the possibilities of this scenario. Results. We obtain a variety of spectral shapes depending on the model parameters, some of them predicting significant gamma-ray emission. The observed broadband spectrum of the low-mass microquasar XTE J1118+480 can be satisfactorily reproduced by the model. Conclusions. Our results indicate that outbursts similar to those displayed in the past by XTE J1118+480 might be detected with present-day gamma-ray instruments.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica

A systematic overview of dental methods for age assessment in living individuals: from traditional to artificial intelligence-based approaches

    Get PDF
Dental radiographies have been used for many decades for estimating the chronological age, with a view to forensic identification, migration flow control, or assessment of dental development, among others. This study aims to analyse the current application of chronological age estimation methods from dental X-ray images in the last 6 years, involving a search for works in the Scopus and PubMed databases. Exclusion criteria were applied to discard off-topic studies and experiments which are not compliant with a minimum quality standard. The studies were grouped according to the applied methodology, the estimation target, and the age cohort used to evaluate the estimation performance. A set of performance metrics was used to ensure good comparability between the different proposed methodologies. A total of 613 unique studies were retrieved, of which 286 were selected according to the inclusion criteria. Notable tendencies to overestimation and underestimation were observed in some manual approaches for numeric age estimation, being especially notable in the case of Demirjian (overestimation) and Cameriere (underestimation). On the other hand, the automatic approaches based on deep learning techniques are scarcer, with only 17 studies published in this regard, but they showed a more balanced behaviour, with no tendency to overestimation or underestimation. From the analysis of the results, it can be concluded that traditional methods have been evaluated in a wide variety of population samples, ensuring good applicability in different ethnicities. On the other hand, fully automated methods were a turning point in terms of performance, cost, and adaptability to new populationsOpen Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Education and competence mismatches: job satisfaction consequences for workers

    Get PDF
The accuracy of the match in the job-worker pairing is analyzed both in terms of education and in terms of qualification using Spanish data from the 2001 wave of the European Community Household Panel (ECHP). Regarding the incidence of mismatch situations, the results suggest that the education match appears to be a rather poor indicator for the qualification match. In addition, ordered discrete choice models reveal that they have different consequences in terms of job satisfaction as well

Effect of lead on proliferation, oxidative stress and genotoxic damage of 3T3-L1 fibroblasts

Lead (Pb) is an environmental and industrial contaminant that still represents a public health problem. In this paper, we investigated the effect of Pb on proliferation, lipid peroxidation and the number of micronucleated cells in exponentially growing 3T3-L1 fibroblasts, a cell line previously used to evaluate different environmental contaminants. We found that Pb (10 μM or higher) was able to inhibit proliferation of exponentially growing cells after 24-h treatment, which was evaluated by the MTT assay and cell counting in Neubauer chamber, but cell survival was not affected according to the trypan blue exclusion assay. On the other hand, Pb was able to increase lipid peroxidation and the number of micronucleated cells, which are indicative of oxidative stress and genotoxic damage respectively. We also found that removal of Pb after 24-h treatment allowed cells to recover proliferation. Our results indicate that Pb was able to induce oxidative stress and genotoxicity in this cell line under standardized conditions, which supports the involvement of Pb in similar effects observed in human exposed to this heavy metal. In addition, Pb inhibits proliferation of exponentially growing fibroblasts but cells resume proliferation after removal of this metal, which suggests that it is important to move away Pb-exposed individuals from the source of contamination.Fil: Martini, Claudia Noemí. Loop recognition and copper-mediated disulfide reduction underpin metal site assembly of CuA in human cytochrome oxidase

    Get PDF
Maturation of cytochrome oxidases is a complex process requiring assembly of several subunits and adequate uptake of the metal cofactors. Two orthologous Sco proteins (Sco1 and Sco2) are essential for the correct assembly of the dicopper CuA site in the human oxidase, but their function is not fully understood. Here, we report an in vitro biochemical study that shows that Sco1 is a metallochaperone that selectively transfers Cu(I) ions based on loop recognition, whereas Sco2 is a copper-dependent thiol reductase of the cysteine ligands in the oxidase. Copper binding to Sco2 is essential to elicit its redox function and as a guardian of the reduced state of its own cysteine residues in the oxidizing environment of the mitochondrial intermembrane space (IMS). These results provide a detailed molecular mechanism for CuA assembly, suggesting that copper and redox homeostasis are intimately linked in the mitochondrion.Fil: Morgada, Marcos Nicolás. Proyecto de actuación en Secundaria como soporte básico de la cuarta transición

    Get PDF
