    Blueprint model and language for engineering cloud applications

    Abstract: The research presented in this thesis is positioned within the domain of engineering CSBAs. Its contribution is twofold: (1) a uniform specification language, called the Blueprint Specification Language (BSL), for specifying cloud services across several cloud vendors and (2) a set of associated techniques, called the Blueprint Manipulation Techniques (BMTs), for publishing, querying, and composing cloud service specifications with aim to support the flexible design and configuration of an CSBA.

    Reaching for Yield and the Diabolic Loop in a Monetary Union

    We use the theoretical framework of Acharya and Naqvi (2019) to introduce a macro-financial model where the “reaching for yield” incentivized by a loosening monetary policy in the United States mitigates the diabolic loop in a Monetary Union. We provide empirical evidence that the introduction of an accommodative monetary policy by the Fed lowers the yields in US assets and increases liquidity and, by extension, the threshold above which a liquidity shock can damage a bank. This, in turn, incentivizes bank managers to optimize their portfolios by investing in risky assets. We use a monetary VAR to provide novel empirical evidence that there is an increase in the flow of funds to European assets, a result which can be attributed to the “reaching-for-yield” incentive. This portfolio balance channel attenuates the effects of financial fragility and improves government funding costs as well as credit conditions by providing liquidity to domestic banks and assets. As a result, the “reaching-for-yield” incentive mitigates the diabolic loop effect

    Wireless Energy Harvesting Assisted Two-Way Cognitive Relay Networks: Protocol Design and Performance Analysis

    This paper analyzes the effects of realistic relay transceiver on the outage probability and throughput of a two-way relay cognitive network that is equipped with an energy-harvesting relay. In this paper, we configure the network with two wireless power transfer policies and two bidirectional relaying protocols. Furthermore, the differences in receiver structure of relay node that can be time switching or power splitting structure are also considered to develop closed-form expressions of outage and throughput of the network providing that the delay of transmission is limited. Numerical results are presented to corroborate our analysis for all considered network configurations. This paper facilitates us not only to quantify the degradation of outage probability and throughput due to the impairments of realistic transceiver but also to provide an insight into practical effects of specified configuration of power transfer policy, relaying protocol, and receiver structure on outage and throughput. For instance, the system with multiple access broadcast protocol and the power splitting-based receiver architecture achieves ceiling throughout higher than that of the transmission rate of source nodes. On the contrary, a combination of dual-source energy transfer policy and the time division broadcast protocol is contributed the highest level of limiting factor in terms of transceiver hardware impairments on the network throughput.</p

    US Antidumping Petitions and Revealed Comparative Advantage of Shrimp Exporting Countries

    The paper explores the trade competitiveness of seven major shrimp exporting countries, namely Vietnam, China, Thailand, Ecuador, India, Indonesia and Mexico, to the USA. Specifically, we investigate whether the United States (US) antidumping petitions impact upon the bilateral revealed comparative advantage (RCA) indexes for each of the seven shrimp exporting countries with the USA. Monthly data from January 2003 to December 2014 and the panel data model are used to examine the determinants of the RCA for the shrimp exporting countries. The empirical results show the shrimp exporting countries have superior competitiveness against the shrimp market in the USA. Moreover, the RCA indexes are significantly negatively influenced by shrimp prices, and are positively affected by US income per capita. However, the EMS (Early Mortality Syndrome) shrimp disease, domestic US shrimp quantity, exchange rate, and US antidumping laws are found to have no significant impacts on the RCA indexes. In terms of policy implications, the USA should try to reduce production costs of shrimp in the US market instead of imposing antidumping petitions, and the shrimp exporting countries should maintain their comparative advantage and diversify into new markets

    Two nonmagnetic impurities in the DSC and DDW state of the cuprate superconductors as a probe for the pseudogap

    The quantum interference between two nonmagnetic impurities is studied numerically in both the d-wave superconducting (DSC) and the d-density wave (DDW) state. In all calculations we include the tunnelling through excited states from the CuO2_2 planes to the BiO layer probed by the STM tip. Compared to the single impurity case, a systematic study of the modulations in the two-impurity local density of states can distinguish between the DSC or DDW states. This is important if the origin of the pseudogap phase is caused by preformed pairs or DDW order. Furthermore, in the DSC state the study of the LDOS around two nonmagnetic impurities provide further tests for the potential scattering model versus more strongly correlated models.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Vortex structure in d-density wave scenario of pseudogap

    We investigate the vortex structure assuming the d-density wave scenario of the pseudogap. We discuss the profiles of the order parameters in the vicinity of the vortex, effective vortex charge and the local density of states. We find a pronounced modification of these quantities when compared to a purely superconducting case. Results have been obtained for a clean system as well as in the presence of a nonmagnetic impurity. We show that the competition between superconductivity and the density wave may explain some experimental data recently obtained for high-temperature superconductors. In particular, we show that the d-density wave scenario explains the asymmetry of the gap observed in the vicinity of the vortex core.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
