Stability radii of positive linear Volterra–Stieltjes equations

AbstractWe study stability radii of linear Volterra–Stieltjes equations under multi-perturbations and affine perturbations. A lower and upper bound for the complex stability radius with respect to multi-perturbations are given. Furthermore, in some special cases concerning the structure matrices, the complex stability radius can precisely be computed via the associated transfer functions. Then, the class of positive linear Volterra–Stieltjes equations is studied in detail. It is shown that for this class, complex, real and positive stability radius under multi-perturbations or multi-affine perturbations coincide and can be computed by simple formulae expressed in terms of the system matrices. As direct consequences of the obtained results, we get some results on robust stability of positive linear integro-differential equations and of positive linear functional differential equations. To the best of our knowledge, most of the results of this paper are new

Stability of positive linear Volterra integro-differential systems with delays

We study positive linear Volterra integro-differential systems with infinitely many delays. Positivity is characterized in terms of the system entries. A generalized version of the Perron-Frobenius Theorem is shown; this may be interesting in its own right but is exploited here for stability results: explicit spectral criteria for L1-stability and exponential asymptotic stability. Also the concept of stability radii, determining the maximal robustness with respect to additive perturbations to L1-stable system, is introduced and it is shown that the complex, real and positive stability radii coincide and can be computed by an explicit formula

Linear time-varying Volterra integro-differential equations of non convolution type are considered. Positivity is characterized and a sufficient condition for exponential stability is presented

summary:We present new explicit criteria for exponential stability of general linear neutral time-varying differential systems. Particularly, our results give extensions of the well-known stability criteria reported in [3,11] to linear neutral time-varying differential systems with distributed delays

Cost optimization of two-stage helical gearboxes with second stage double gear-sets

In practice, the cost of a gearbox plays a very important role in the trade. Therefore, reducing the cost of gearboxes is an important task not only when manufacturing the gearboxes but also when designing them. In order to reduce the cost of a gearbox, there are many solutions in which determining the optimal partial gear ratios of a gearbox is an effective measure. This is because it not only the size, the mass but also the cost of a gearbox depends greatly on the partial gear ratios. This work presents a method for calculating the cost function of two-stage helical gearboxes with second-stage double gear-sets based on the mass of the components that construct the gearbox. The cost objective function is minimized to achieve the optimal transmission ratios. Furthermore, screening experiments are carried out with nine important input parameters that have significant effects on the optimum transmission ratio of the second stage. These parameters are the total gearbox ratio, the coefficient of wheel face width of the first stage, coefficient of wheel face width of the second stage, the allowable contact stress of the first stage, the allowable contact stress of the second stage, the output torque, the cost of gearbox housing, the cost of gears, and the shaft cost. The experimental results of were analysed by using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) method with the help of Minitab 19 software. The results demonstrate that the effective weight of the input parameters and their interactions on the output response was investigated. Also, a regression model for computing the optimal transmission ratio of the second stage was proposed. This brings significance not only in the design process but also in manufacturing since the gearbox cost can decreas

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Canarium tramdenum Dai and Yakovl. in Northern Vietnam

Canarium tramdenum occurs naturally in subtropical and tropical regions of Indochina and China. The wood is used for making high quality furniture and the fruit and leaves are used in traditional medicine. However, a lack of information on genetic diversity and population structure has handicapped the genetic conservation and domestication of this high-value species. This study evaluated genetic variation within and among four C. tramdenum populations. Sixty individuals were collected from four natural populations in Vietnam in the provinces of Ninhbinh, Bacgiang, Nghean, and Backan. Genetic diversity and genetic structure were determined using 20 ISSR markers. A total of 192 DNA fragments with sizes ranging from 110 bp to 3,000 bp were detected, of which 154 segments (80.2%) were polymorphic and 38 segments (19.8%) were monomorphic. The ISSR data indicated a moderate degree of genetic diversity for the species (h = 0.252). The four populations were separated into three genetic clusters with low levels of genetic distance between them. AMOVA result showed that most (78%) of the genetic variation was within the populations. The moderate to high genetic diversity of C. tramdenum and the low genetic differentiation among populations suggested that all existing natural populations in the particular regions needed to be preserved to protect the genetic diversity of this species

Pragmatic economic valuation of adaptation risk and responses across scales Case study in Vietnam

    Get PDF
Vietnam is one of the countries particularly vulnerable to climate change. Increased temperatures, increased salinity intrusion due to sea-level rise and altering precipitation patterns significantly affect livelihood options of smallholder farmers, resulting in losses in agricultural production. These impacts are projected to become increasingly severe, hence, adaptation to climate change and sensitivity needs to be assessed and adaptation measures taken. This study provides a vulnerability assessment based on the results for exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity. This includes present and projected future climatic conditions and hazards, crop suitability analyses and socioeconomic assessments on a district scale. In addition, a case study is presented focusing on the two provinces of Tra Vinh and Ben Tre, identified as highly vulnerable in the Mekong Delta area. The case study shows opportunities, economic trade-offs and barriers of adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices to adapt to progressive climate change

CSA: Thực hành nông nghiệp thông minh với khí hậu ở Việt Nam

During the last five years, Vietnam has been one of the countries most affected by climate change. Severe typhoons, flooding, cold spells, salinity intrusion, and drought have affected agriculture production across the country, from upland to lowland regions. Fortunately for Vietnam, continuous work in developing climate-smart agriculture has been occurring in research organizations and among innovative farmers and entrepreneurs. Application of various CSA practices and technologies to adapt to the impact of climate change in agriculture production have been expanding. However, there is a need to accelerate the scaling process of these practices and technologies in order to ensure growth of agriculture production and food security, increase income of farmers, make farming climate resilient, and contribute to global climate change mitigation. This book aims to provide basic information to researchers, managers, and technicians and extentionists at different levels on what CSA practices and technologies can be up scaled in different locations in Vietnam
