A 38 year-old male was admitted to the emergency room with fever and hemoptysis in the last 3 weeks. His past medical history included previous intravenous drug usage (20 years before), severe acute pancreatitis in the last year, and steroid therapy for the last 10 months due to presumptive diagnosis of bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia. The episode of pancreatitis required hospital admission, when the patient received total parenteral nutrition and also had an episode of pneumonia treated with antibiotics.

Family network of children with special health needs: implications for Nursing

OBJECTIVE: to describe appropriate sources and resources for caregivers of children with special health needs in the community. METHOD: A qualitative study that used the creativity and sensitivity dynamics speaking map, part of the sensitive creative method, involving 11 caregivers of children with special health needs who are assisted in a university hospital located in the South of Brazil. RESULTS: the maps graphically represented through the genogram and ecomap showed that the caregiving women consistently and regularly use the resources of the internal and external family network; they eventually and irregularly access the community social network for physical and psychological support. CONCLUSION: the reclusive nature of care for these children inside the family circle contributes to their social invisibility. Based on this new information, it is recommended that Nursing participate in the care that is focused on these children's families, with particular attention to their socio-cultural conditions

Is the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) a coastal species? Expanding its distribution range in the Atlantic Ocean using at-sea observer data

captura asociada a la pesquería de palangre de superficie dirigida a pez espadaThe occurrence of tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) in the Atlantic Ocean was assessed using at-sea observer data from multiple pelagic longline fisheries (Japan, Portugal, Spain, United States and Uruguay). Geographic positions of 2,764 tiger sharks, recorded between 1993 and 2013 and covering a wide area of the Atlantic were compared with the currently accepted distribution ranges of the species. Most of our records fell outside the accepted distribution ranges in both the Southern and Northern hemispheres. These results strongly suggest that the distribution range of the tiger shark is considerably wider than previously described, particularly over the open oceanEn prensa1,834

α-MSH regulates intergenic splicing of MC1R and TUBB3 in human melanocytes

Alternative splicing enables higher eukaryotes to increase their repertoire of proteins derived from a restricted number of genes. However, the possibility that functional diversity may also be augmented by splicing between adjacent genes has been largely neglected. Here, we show that the human melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) gene, a critical component of the facultative skin pigmentation system, has a highly complex and inefficient poly(A) site which is instrumental in allowing intergenic splicing between this locus and its immediate downstream neighbour tubulin-β-III (TUBB3). These transcripts, which produce two distinct protein isoforms localizing to the plasma membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum, seem to be restricted to humans as no detectable chimeric mRNA could be found in MC1R expressing mouse melanocytes. Significantly, treatment with the MC1R agonist α-MSH or activation of the stress response kinase p38-MAPK, both key molecules associated with ultraviolet radiation dermal insult and subsequent skin tanning, result in a shift in expression from MC1R in favour of chimeric MC1R-TUBB3 isoforms in cultured melanocytes. We propose that these chimeric proteins serve to equip melanocytes with novel cellular phenotypes required as part of the pigmentation response

Synopsis of the second virtual meeting of the Blue Genes community: In search of new ways to increase our connection with Nature

19 pagesOn June 22, 2023, the second online meeting ofthe Blue Genes initiative took place, unitingmembers of the Blue Genes Community. The aimwas to exchange experiences, discuss initiatives, and share insights concerning the Ocean andWaters. Over 30 participants joined this virtual assembly. Following a series of inspiringpresentations delivered by several of the community members, the meetingtransitioned into an interactive session, enabling attendees to activelyparticipate in discussions and to share their viewpoints. Among other relevantconversations, the meeting proposed to target a milestone: to organize aSatellite Event during the 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference, which will takeplace in Barcelona in April 2024, as an open space to explore how to search fornew ways to increase our connection with Nature, with the ocean as its centralcomponent. The participants felt this in-person meeting would be an excellentvenue to work towards defining the priorities and strategies for the future ofthe Blue Genes community, as well as to engage a wider number of actorsWith the institutional support of the ‘Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence’ accreditation (CEX2019-000928-S)Peer reviewe
