Language teaching has become a priority in the Costa Rican educational system, considering it as a tool for communication and development of thought. Without language, there is no access to other curriculum disciplinary knowledge. A successful experience conducted some years ago, with students from 4th to 6th grade, was the basis for the design and implementation of a professional development activity addressed to promoting an integration strategy previously adjusted according to the Ministry’s requirements and the existing national regulations. This study is developed in the framework of a qualitative paradigm including research-action and systematization. A purposive sample was selected based on a suitability factor, through which individuals are informed about the strategy, and then the strategy is applied to a group of students from urban-marginal areas. The techniques used include literature review, analysis of curriculum and Ministry’s regulations, application of an in-depth interview, discussions from the course’s participant in a portfolio, and discussions from students to whom the strategy was applied. We analyzed the considerations of teachers and students, as well as the theoretical and regulatory information by triangulation. The study’s conclusion is the necessity of a communicative approach in language teaching and our recommendation is to implement the strategy developed in the Costa Rican classrooms as provided in this paper.

eReuse is an initiative and action-research project that since 2015 has iterated over research and activism to understand, develop, apply to communities, evaluate and scale-up the circular economy of digital devices. The work, in partnership with diverse organisations, has contributed to the transition towards a circular economy of digital devices that contributes effectively to sustainable development. This work was partially funded by the Spanish Government under contracts PID2019-106774RB-C21, and PCI2019-111851-2 (LeadingEdge Chist-era), and the Generalitat de Catalunya as Consolidated Research Group 2017-SGR-990, the NGI DLT4EU, NGI Policy in Practice, NGI Atlantic projects, Subtract (Interreg Europe), the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), and the Waste Agency of the Catalan government.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Circular digital devices: lessons about the social and planetary boundaries

    Get PDF
The digital world can be part of the solution to the coexistence of people and the planet, with large efficiencies gained through digital solutions, but it is part of the problem too, as it requires vast natural resources for digital devices in terms of participation. The challenge lies in satisfying the demand for digital devices for everyone, particularly for those with scarce resources, while preserving planetary limits. We have implemented and optimised a circular economy ecosystem that —through donation, refurbishment and traceability— delivers locally reused digital devices at a fair economic and environmental cost to citizens in need, providing satisfactory computing services and reducing the demand to manufacture new devices, which instead must be more durable. Following the sourcing of 10,000 computers, 1,000 have been successfully refurbished by local social enterprises and used by citizens in the city of Barcelona as a common good, herein we present an analysis of the achievements, limitations, and conditions of this model, which has already been replicated in other areas. It is feasible, and we also explore its scalability and sustainability in economic, social, and environmental contexts. We identify critical success factors, such as the roles of local public or private donors, social-support organisations, and ecosystem facilitators, in mediating among all actors involved. This work was partially funded by the Spanish government under contracts PID2019-106774RB-C21, and PCI2019-111851-2 (LeadingEdge Chist-era), the NGI-DLT4EU, NGI-Policy, NGI-Atlantic projects, Subtract (Interreg Europe), and the Waste Agency of the Catalonia. Many organisations and people have participated in the eReuse circuit and have contributed to improving the model: Pangea.org for supporting the eReuse project since its initial idea, the Centre of Cooperation for Development UPC, the City Councils of Barcelona, Sant Boi and Getafe, and the entities part of eReuse: Asociación Cultural La Kalle-Reutilizak, Solidança, Donalo.org, AndròminesAlencop, Fundación Esplai, Trinijove, TXT-UPC, Banc dels Aliments, Abacus, Sant Joan de Déu-Terres de l’Ebre, Punt de referència, among others.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Conceptual framework of mental health literacy: Results from a scoping review and a Delphi survey

    Get PDF
Mental health literacy (MHL) has been identified as a factor influencing early help-seeking for mental health problems (MHPs) and stigmatizing attitudes. However, the lack of consensus on its definition has led to considerable heterogeneity in measurement and, consequently, methodological challenges in comparing data. In this way, the present study was conducted with the following objectives: in Phase I, mapping the existing literature through a scoping review; in Phase 2, 28 experts in the field of mental health participated to develop a consensus statement on the relevance and importance of the findings from Phase 1. A total of 37 articles were included for review. Notable nuances were identified in the conceptualization of MHL, particularly with regard to the fact that it should not be limited to mental disorders but should also encompass mental health. Furthermore, the sociocultural influence was highlighted as shaping MHL, recognizing it as a modifiable competence that adapts to different contexts and life stages, involving both individual and collective levels. The experts deemed the findings pertinent and relevant with a high degree of consensus, except for factors related to MHL. This framework provides a refined definition of MHL and related factors that should be taken into account to guide nursing and other disciplines' studies and interventions on MHL. The evolution of this concept includes dimensions to be considered in future research, especially when developing new measurement instruments or implementing educational programmes. This knowledge and skills cannot be determined globally without considering the context and development of the individual

Testing different strategies for the remediation of soils polluted with lindane

    Get PDF
This work attempts to clarify the remediation processes involved in the treatment of soil spiked with non-soluble species like lindane. To achieve this goal, the remediation of spiked soil is evaluated coupling electro-kinetic soil flushing (EKSF) with three types of permeable reactive barriers (PRB) which consist of soil merged with nanoparticles of ZVI (n-ZVI), granular particles of ZVI (m-ZVI) or granular activated carbon (GAC). Likewise, the effect of reverse polarity in EKSF will be assessed. Results show that, for a given electric field applied, the intensity reached depends on the size and materials of the reactive particles contained in the PRB and decreases in the sequence EKAB-EKmZVIB-EKnZVIB. Additionally, water content and pH and conductivity profiles between rows of electrodes are also affected by the presence of PRB, mainly because ZVI particles can behave as bipolar electrodes and, thus amend current lines and water flux. In terms of lindane mobilization, the differences are even more remarkable since iron particles promote lindane dehalogenation and activated carbon shows a very good adsorption capacity for lindane. After 720 h of operation, the percentage of lindane extracted is below 2% in all EK-strategies while the percentage retained in soil depends on the strategy used: REKSF seems to prevent lindane removal while EKSF and EKAB lead to higher removal. Results are significant for the design of full-scale applications for the remediation of soils polluted with non-soluble species

Artículo científicoSteviol glycosides are sweetening compounds from the Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni plant. This product is considered safe for human consumption and was approved as a food additive by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Its effects on the ecosystem have not been studied in depth; therefore, it is necessary to carry out ecotoxicological studies in organisms such as Cyprinus carpio. The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity by SGs on diverse tissues in C. carpio using oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers. To test the antioxidant activity, carps were exposed to four systems: (1) SGs free 444 control,(2)CCl 0.5mL/kg,(3)SGs1g/L,and(4)CCl 0.5mL/kg+SGs1g/Lat96h.Thefollowingbiomarkerswereanalyzed: lipoperoxidation (LPX), hydroperoxide content (HPC), and protein carbonyl content (PCC), as well as antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). It was found that both (3 and 4) systems’ exposure decreases LPX, CHP, PCC, SOD,andCATwithrespecttotheCCl system.TheresultsofthisstudydemonstratethattheconcentrationsofSGsusedarenot capable of generating oxidative stress and, on the contrary, would appear to induce an antioxidant effect
