A Glance at the New Article 9 Secured Transaction
Those of us who teach a course on Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code (Secured Transactions) dreaded the approach of July I, 2001. On that day, a revised version of Article 9 became effective in New Mexico and most other states. The old notes had to be discarded. New materials had to be prepared, or at least the old ones had to be revised. Perhaps there would be some excitement in learning what the drafters had done, but more obvious was the effort needed to learn something new. Maybe it was time to retire. We have now taught the revised version of Article 9. We know a little more about it now, and perhaps by next year, we\u27ll know more
Influence of BMI and dietary restraint on self-selected portions of prepared meals in US women
The rise of obesity prevalence has been attributed in part to an increase in food and beverage portion sizes selected and consumed among overweight and obese consumers. Nevertheless, evidence from observations of adults is mixed and contradictory findings might reflect the use of small or unrepresentative samples. The objective of this study was i) to determine the extent to which BMI and dietary restraint predict self-selected portion sizes for a range of commercially available prepared savoury meals and ii) to consider the importance of these variables relative to two previously established predictors of portion selection, expected satiation and expected liking. A representative sample of female consumers (N = 300, range 18–55 years) evaluated 15 frozen savoury prepared meals. For each meal, participants rated their expected satiation and expected liking, and selected their ideal portion using a previously validated computer-based task. Dietary restraint was quantified using the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ-R). Hierarchical multiple regression was performed on self-selected portions with age, hunger level, and meal familiarity entered as control variables in the first step of the model, expected satiation and expected liking as predictor variables in the second step, and DEBQ-R and BMI as exploratory predictor variables in the third step. The second and third steps significantly explained variance in portion size selection (18% and 4%, respectively). Larger portion selections were significantly associated with lower dietary restraint and with lower expected satiation. There was a positive relationship between BMI and portion size selection (p = 0.06) and between expected liking and portion size selection (p = 0.06). Our discussion considers future research directions, the limited variance explained by our model, and the potential for portion size underreporting by overweight participants
Consumer Bankruptcy Panel: Bringing Relevance Back to Consumer Bankruptcy
Conversations on the consumer panel centered around the relevance of bankruptcy for the average consumer and how the system could be improved. The bulk of this panel discussed the notion that the Bankruptcy Code, when drafted, did not effectively cover many of issues faced by the average consumer today. The astronomical increases in student loan debt, credit card debt, mortgages, and car payments are some of the key issues discussed
Practical Recommendations of the Obesity Management Task Force of the European Association for the Study of Obesity for the Post-Bariatric Surgery Medical Management
Bariatric surgery is today the most effective long-term therapy for the management of patients with severe obesity, and its use is recommended by the relevant guidelines of the management of obesity in adults. Bariatric surgery is in general safe and effective, but it can cause new clinical problems and is associated with specific diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic needs. For clinicians, the acquisition of special knowledge and skills is required in order to deliver appropriate and effective care to the post-bariatric patient. In the present recommendations, the basic notions needed to provide first-level adequate medical care to post-bariatric patients are summarised. Basic information about nutrition, management of co-morbidities, pregnancy, psychological issues as well as weight regain prevention and management is derived from current evidences and existing guidelines. A short list of clinical practical recommendations is included for each item. It remains clear that referral to a bariatric multidisciplinary centre, preferably the one performing the original procedure, should be considered in case of more complex clinical situations
Basin-scale biogeography of marine phytoplankton reflects cellular-scale optimization of metabolism and physiology
Extensive microdiversity within Prochlorococcus, the most abundant marine cyanobacterium, occurs at scales from a single droplet of seawater to ocean basins. To interpret the structuring role of variations in genetic potential, as well as metabolic and physiological acclimation, we developed a mechanistic constraint-based modeling framework that incorporates the full suite of genes, proteins, metabolic reactions, pigments, and biochemical compositions of 69 sequenced isolates spanning the Prochlorococcus pangenome. Optimizing each strain to the local, observed physical and chemical environment along an Atlantic Ocean transect, we predicted variations in strain-specific patterns of growth rate, metabolic configuration, and physiological state, defining subtle niche subspaces directly attributable to differences in their encoded metabolic potential. Predicted growth rates covaried with observed ecotype abundances, affirming their significance as a measure of fitness and inferring a nonlinear density dependence of mortality. Our study demonstrates the potential to interpret global-scale ecosystem organization in terms of cellular-scale processes
Various Approaches for Predicting Land Cover in Mountain Areas
Using former maps, geographers intend to study the evolution of the land
cover in order to have a prospective approach on the future landscape;
predictions of the future land cover, by the use of older maps and
environmental variables, are usually done through the GIS (Geographic
Information System). We propose here to confront this classical geographical
approach with statistical approaches: a linear parametric model (polychotomous
regression modeling) and a nonparametric one (multilayer perceptron). These
methodologies have been tested on two real areas on which the land cover is
known at various dates; this allows us to emphasize the benefit of these two
statistical approaches compared to GIS and to discuss the way GIS could be
improved by the use of statistical models.Comment: 14 pages; Classifications: Information Theory; Probability Theory &

Diagnosis and management of an immature teratoma during ovarian stimulation: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>The discovery of a mature teratoma (dermoid cyst) of the ovary during ovarian stimulation is not a rare event. Conversely, we could not find any reported cases of immature teratoma in such a situation. Clinical and ultrasound arguments for this immature form are scarcely or poorly evaluated.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>We describe the case of a 31-year-old Caucasian woman with primary infertility, who developed an immature teratoma during an in vitro fertilization ovarian stimulation cycle.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Ultrasound signs of an atypical cyst during ovarian stimulation allowed us to adopt a careful medical attitude and to adapt the required surgical oncological treatment.</p
