    Activation of plasma membrane H + -ATPases participates in dormancy alleviation in sunflower seeds

    International audienceUsing various inhibitors and scavengers we took advantage of the size of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seeds to investigate in vivo the effects of hormones, namely abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene (ET), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the polarization of dormant (D) and non-dormant (ND) embryonic seed cells using microelectrodes. Our data show that D and ND seed cells present different polarization likely due to the regulation of plasma membrane (PM) H+-ATPase activity. The data obtained after addition of hormones or ROS scavengers further suggest that ABA dependent inhibition of PM H+-ATPases could participate in dormancy maintenance and that ET-and ROS-dependent PM H+-ATPase stimulation could participate in dormancy release in sunflower seeds

    Call for emergency action to restore dietary diversity and protect global food systems in times of COVID-19 and beyond: Results from a cross-sectional study in 38 countries

    Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the fragility of the global food system, sending shockwaves across countries' societies and economy. This has presented formidable challenges to sustaining a healthy and resilient lifestyle. The objective of this study is to examine the food consumption patterns and assess diet diversity indicators, primarily focusing on the food consumption score (FCS), among households in 38 countries both before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 37 207 participants (mean age: 36.70 ± 14.79, with 77 % women) was conducted in 38 countries through an online survey administered between April and June 2020. The study utilized a pre-tested food frequency questionnaire to explore food consumption patterns both before and during the COVID-19 periods. Additionally, the study computed Food Consumption Score (FCS) as a proxy indicator for assessing the dietary diversity of households. Findings: This quantification of global, regional and national dietary diversity across 38 countries showed an increment in the consumption of all food groups but a drop in the intake of vegetables and in the dietary diversity. The household's food consumption scores indicating dietary diversity varied across regions. It decreased in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, including Lebanon (p < 0.001) and increased in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries including Bahrain (p = 0.003), Egypt (p < 0.001) and United Arab Emirates (p = 0.013). A decline in the household's dietary diversity was observed in Australia (p < 0.001), in South Africa including Uganda (p < 0.001), in Europe including Belgium (p < 0.001), Denmark (p = 0.002), Finland (p < 0.001) and Netherland (p = 0.027) and in South America including Ecuador (p < 0.001), Brazil (p < 0.001), Mexico (p < 0.0001) and Peru (p < 0.001). Middle and older ages [OR = 1.2; 95 % CI = [1.125–1.426] [OR = 2.5; 95 % CI = [1.951–3.064], being a woman [OR = 1.2; 95 % CI = [1.117–1.367], having a high education (p < 0.001), and showing amelioration in food-related behaviors [OR = 1.4; 95 % CI = [1.292–1.709] were all linked to having a higher dietary diversity. Conclusion: The minor to moderate changes in food consumption patterns observed across the 38 countries within relatively short time frames could become lasting, leading to a significant and prolonged reduction in dietary diversity, as demonstrated by our findings.RevisiĂłn por pare

    Sex disparities in food consumption patterns, dietary diversity and determinants of self-reported body weight changes before and amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 10 Arab countries

    Background: The COVID-19 pandemic along with its confinement period boosted lifestyle modifications and impacted women and men differently which exacerbated existing gender inequalities. The main objective of this paper is to assess the gender-based differentials in food consumption patterns, dietary diversity and the determinants favoring weight change before and amid the COVID-19 pandemic among Arab men and women from 10 Arab countries. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted based on a convenience sample of 12,447 households' family members (mean age: 33.2 ± 12.9; 50.1% females) and information from participants aged 18 years and above was collected about periods before and during the pandemic. Results: Findings showed that, during the COVID-19 period, the dietary diversity, declined by 1.9% among females compared to males (0.4%) (p < 0.001) and by 1.5% among overweight participants (p < 0.001) compared to their counterparts. Conclusions: To conclude, gender-sensitive strategies and policies to address weight gain and dietary diversity during emergent shocks and pandemics are urgently needed in the region.This research was funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (G047518N) and Flanders Innovation and Entrepreneurship (HBC.2018.0397).     Impact of COVID-19 lockdown on smoking (waterpipe and cigarette) and participants' BMI across various sociodemographic groups in Arab countries in the Mediterranean Region

    INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smokers are at high risk of developing severe COVID-19. Lockdown was a chosen strategy to deal with the spread of infectious diseases; nonetheless, it influenced people's eating and smoking behaviors. The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on smoking (waterpipe and cigarette) behavior and its associations with sociodemographic characteristics and body mass index. METHODS: The data were derived from a large-scale retrospective cross-sectional study using a validated online international survey from 38 countries (n=37207) conducted between 17 April and 25 June 2020. The Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO-EMR countries) data related to 10 Arabic countries that participated in this survey have been selected for analysis in this study. A total of 12433 participants were included in the analysis of this study, reporting their smoking behavior and their BMI before and during the COVID-19 lockdown. Descriptive and regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between smoking practices and the participant's country of origin, sociodemographic characteristics, and BMI (kg/m2). RESULTS: Overall, the prevalence rate of smoking decreased significantly during the lockdown from 29.8% to 23.5% (p<0.05). The percentage of females who smoke was higher than males among the studied population. The highest smoking prevalence was found in Lebanon (33.2%), and the lowest was in Oman (7.9%). In Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia, the data showed a significant difference in the education level of smokers before and during the lockdown (p<0.05). Smokers in Lebanon had lower education levels than those in other countries, where the majority of smokers had a Bachelor's degree. The findings show that the BMI rates in Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, and Saudi Arabia significantly increased during the lockdown (p<0.05). The highest percentages of obesity among smokers before the lockdown were in Oman (33.3%), followed by Bahrain (28.4%) and Qatar (26.4%), whereas, during the lockdown, the percentage of obese smokers was highest in Bahrain (32.1%) followed by Qatar (31.3%) and Oman (25%). According to the logistic regression model, the odds ratio of smoking increased during the pandemic, whereas the odds ratio of TV watching decreased. This finding was statistically significant by age, gender, education level, country of residence, and work status. CONCLUSIONS: Although the overall rates of smoking among the studied countries decreased during the lockdown period, we cannot attribute this change in smoking behavior to the lockdown. Smoking cessation services need to anticipate that unexpected disruptions, such as pandemic lockdowns, may be associated with changes in daily tobacco consumption. Public health authorities should promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles to reduce the long-term negative effects of the lockdown

    Our work focused on the relationship of cell wall properties and protein oxidation state on dormancy alleviation and germination process. Different dormancy alleviation treatments have been used: afterripening, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hormone (ethylene). Thus, the study of the change in resistance of the cell wall has shown a decrease in rigidity in treated seeds, able to germinate, compared to dormant ones. Quantification of the identified cell wall monosaccharides did not show any significant difference suggesting the absence of phenomena related to the metabolism of polysaccharides at this stage of germination sensu stricto. Only dormant seeds treated with ROS showed a significant decrease in pectin methylesterase activity, a cell wall enzyme known for its role in elongation and growth. An immunocytological analysis has described a more esterified cell wall in dormant seeds. Thus, the ROS could have a non-enzymatic action while ethylene could act in synergy with the ROS to fulfil the needed relaxation of the cell wall for growth. In addition, a proteomic analysis combining the diagonal chromatography technique with an LC-MS / MS analysis was used on dormant and non-dormant sunflower seeds at different imbibition times in order to identify proteins containing methionine sulfoxyde, a type of reversible protein oxidation. Preliminary analyzes suggest a higher level of protein oxidation in non-dormant seeds. Interestingly, many proteins affected by the oxidation of methionine are related to different biological processes (translation, protein metabolism, energy and metabolism, oxidation-reduction processes) known to be involved in germination, thereby suggesting the importance of methionine oxidation in the regulation of different cellular pathways involved in dormancy emergence and germination.Nos travaux ont portĂ© sur la caractĂ©risation des propriĂ©tĂ©s de la paroi cellulaire et de l’état d’oxydation des protĂ©ines, ainsi que sur leur relation avec la levĂ©e de dormance et le processus de germination. Ainsi, nous avons Ă©tudiĂ© le changement de rĂ©sistance de la paroi cellulaire en utilisant diffĂ©rents traitements de levĂ©e de dormance: la post-maturation au sec, les espĂšces rĂ©actives de l’oxygĂšne (reactive oxygen species, ROS) et une hormone (l’éthylĂšne). L’étude du changement de rĂ©sistance de la paroi cellulaire a montrĂ© une diminution de rigiditĂ© chez les graines traitĂ©es, capables de germer, par rapport Ă  celles dormantes. La quantification des monosaccharides de la paroi n’a pas mis en Ă©vidence de diffĂ©rence significative, ce qui suggĂšre l’absence de phĂ©nomĂšnes associĂ©s au mĂ©tabolisme des polysaccharides Ă  ce stade de la germination sensu stricto. Seules les graines dormantes traitĂ©es avec les ROS ont prĂ©sentĂ© une diminution significative de l’activitĂ© de la pectine mĂ©thylestĂ©rase, une enzyme de la paroi connue pour son rĂŽle dans l’élongation et la croissance. Une analyse immunocytologique a permis de dĂ©crire une paroi cellulaire plus estĂ©rifiĂ©e chez les graines dormantes. Ainsi, les ROS pourraient avoir une action non-enzymatique alors que l'Ă©thylĂšne pourrait agir en synergie avec les ROS afin d'obtenir le relĂąchement nĂ©cessaire de la paroi cellulaire pour la croissance. En outre, une analyse protĂ©omique combinant la technique chromatographie Ă  une analyse LC-MS / MS a Ă©tĂ© utilisĂ©e sur des graines de tournesol dormantes et non dormantes Ă  diffĂ©rents temps d'imbibition afin d’identifier des protĂ©ines contenant des mĂ©thionines sulfoxydĂ©es, une oxydation protĂ©ique rĂ©versible. Des analyses prĂ©liminaires suggĂšrent un niveau d'oxydation des protĂ©ines au niveau de la mĂ©thionine plus important dans les graines non dormantes.     Nurses’ eating habits in Lebanon during the economic and health crises: a cross-sectional study

    International audienceAbstract Background Nurses face multiple stressors that can influence their lifestyle, thus affecting their health status. Scarce are the scientific data on the nutritional status of nurses, especially during health crises. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the eating habits of hospital nurses in the context of an exceptional economic situation in Lebanon. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using a web-based questionnaire, targeting a non-random sampling of frontline nurses using the snowball technique. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were carried out. The population of the study included all registered nurses working in the Lebanese hospitals. A total of 533 nurses completed the questionnaire; 500 surveys were selected after excluding the ones presenting conditions that may affect their eating behavior. Results The majority of the respondents were women (78.6%) with a mean age of 33 years [18-60] [SD,7.44 years]. Most of them (57.6%) had a crowding index ≄1. The consumption of different food groups decreased during these crises. There was a significant correlation between stress and deterioration of healthy food consumption, which provides beneficial nutrients and minimizes potentially harmful elements, especially for meat (OR 2.388, CI 1.463 to 3.898, P < 0.001). The decrease in monthly income showed a real impact on the consumption of healthy food such as meat (OR 2.181, CI 1.504 to 3.161, P < 001), fruits (OR 1.930, CI 1.289 to 2.888, P = 0.001), and milk and dairy products (OR 1.544, CI 1.039 to 2.295, P = 0.031). Conclusions The pandemic and in particular the economic crisis has changed the consumption of healthy food among hospital nurses in Lebanon. Similar research and support may be extended to include other frontline health care workers

    The effect of borage, ginger and fennel extracts on acrylamide formation in French fries in deep and electric air frying

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three Lebanese wild plant extracts on acrylamide (AA) content in French fries, and to investigate the impact of air frying (AF) and deep frying (DF) techniques against AA formation. HPLC showed higher level of AA in DF (1384.79 ng/g) than in AF (163.1 ng/g). Indeed, the plant extracts of ginger, borage and fennel succeeded to decrease AA (59.67, 67.99, and 73.36% in (AF) and 21.91, 66.29 and 29.15% in (DF) respectively)in both fryers. Accordingly, borage fennel and ginger with their high scavenging activity (86.09%, 89.11% 93.67% respectively) and total phenolic contents (298.61, 117.79 and 97.36 of GAE respectively) can act as healthy beneficial pre-treatment, overall reducing AA in potato fries particularly in AF.Postprint (author's final draft

    Assessment of Feeding Behaviors and Parents’ Frustrations of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Lebanon: A Case-Control Study

    Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit restrictive and repetitive behaviors that affect their eating habits. The purpose of this study is to identify the behavioral feeding problems and eating habits among ASD children compared to typically developed (TD) children age/gender-matched controls, along with their parents’/caregivers’ strategies for dealing with them. It included 43 ASD children and 43 TD children aged two to eleven years. The analysis was performed based on two valid questionnaires: the Behavior Pediatrics Feeding Assessment Scale (BPFA) and “My Child Eating Habits” (MCEH). The BPFA and MCEH scores conceded three manifestations that fall into food selectivity and problematic mealtime behavior in both groups of children. Compared to TD children, children with ASD exhibited higher BPFA scores, which indicated food-related behavioral and skill-based problems (p = 0.004). Children with ASD were less likely to consume fruits, vegetables, and milk than TD children, which may lead to nutritional deficiencies (p = 0.003, p = 0.003, and p = 0.010, respectively). Parents of ASD children were concerned about their behavioral problems and expressed their intention of an early intervention. These findings highlight the importance of nutritional clinical routines that incorporate the evaluation of the nutritional status and feeding behaviors of ASD children
