Scattering in Multilayered Structures: Diffraction from a Nanohole
The spectral expansion of the Green's tensor for a planar multilayered
structure allows us to semi analytically obtain the angular spectrum
representation of the field scattered by an arbitrary dielectric perturbation
present in the structure. In this paper we present a method to find the
expansion coefficients of the scattered field, given that the electric field
inside the perturbation is available. The method uses a complete set of
orthogonal vector wave functions to solve the structure's vector wave equation.
In the two semi-infinite bottom and top media, those vector wave functions
coincide with the plane-wave basis vectors, including both propagating and
evanescent components. The technique is used to obtain the complete angular
spectrum of the field scattered by a nanohole in a metallic film under Gaussian
illumination. We also show how the obtained formalism can easily be extended to
spherically and cylindrically multilayered media. In those cases, the expansion
coefficients would multiply the spherical and cylindrical vector wave

Proliferation tracing with single-cell mass cytometry optimizes generation of stem cell memory-like T cells.
Selective differentiation of naive T cells into multipotent T cells is of great interest clinically for the generation of cell-based cancer immunotherapies. Cellular differentiation depends crucially on division state and time. Here we adapt a dye dilution assay for tracking cell proliferative history through mass cytometry and uncouple division, time and regulatory protein expression in single naive human T cells during their activation and expansion in a complex ex vivo milieu. Using 23 markers, we defined groups of proteins controlled predominantly by division state or time and found that undivided cells account for the majority of phenotypic diversity. We next built a map of cell state changes during naive T-cell expansion. By examining cell signaling on this map, we rationally selected ibrutinib, a BTK and ITK inhibitor, and administered it before T cell activation to direct differentiation toward a T stem cell memory (TSCM)-like phenotype. This method for tracing cell fate across division states and time can be broadly applied for directing cellular differentiation

High-velocity stars in the cores of globular clusters: The illustrative case of NGC 2808
We report the detection of five high-velocity stars in the core of the
globular cluster NGC 2808. The stars lie on the the red giant branch and show
total velocities between 40 and 45 km/s. For a core velocity dispersion sigma_c
= 13.4 km/s, this corresponds to up to 3.4 sigma_c. These velocities are close
to the estimated escape velocity (~ 50 km/s) and suggest an ejection from the
core. Two of these stars have been confirmed in our recent integral field
spectroscopy data and we will discuss them in more detail here. These two red
giants are located at a projected distance of ~ 0.3 pc from the center.
According to their positions on the color magnitude diagram, both stars are
cluster members. We investigate several possible origins for the high
velocities of the stars and conceivable ejection mechanisms. Since the
velocities are close to the escape velocity, it is not obvious whether the
stars are bound or unbound to the cluster. We therefore consider both cases in
our analysis. We perform numerical simulations of three-body dynamical
encounters between binaries and single stars and compare the resulting velocity
distributions of escapers with the velocities of our stars. We compare the
predictions for a single dynamical encounter with a compact object with those
of a sequence of two-body encounters due to relaxation. If the stars are
unbound, the encounter must have taken place recently, when the stars were
already in the giant phase. After including binary fractions and black-hole
retention fractions, projection effects, and detection probabilities from
Monte-Carlo simulations, we estimate the expected numbers of detections for all
the different scenarios. Based on these numbers, we conclude that the most
likely scenario is that the stars are bound and were accelerated by a single
encounter between a binary of main-sequence stars and a ~ 10 M_sun black hole.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in A&
Comorbid Medical Conditions as Predictors of Overall Survival in Glioblastoma Patients
Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive central nervous system tumor with a poor prognosis. This study was conducted to determine any comorbid medical conditions that are associated with survival in GBM. Data were collected from medical records of all patients who presented to VCU Medical Center with GBM between January 2005 and February 2015. Patients who underwent surgery/biopsy were considered for inclusion. Cox proportional hazards regression modeling was performed to assess the relationship between survival and sex, race, and comorbid medical conditions. 163 patients met inclusion criteria. Comorbidities associated with survival on individual-characteristic analysis included: history of asthma (Hazard Ratio [HR]: 2.63; 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.24–5.58; p = 0.01), hypercholesterolemia (HR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.09–3.50; p = 0.02), and incontinence (HR: 2.29; 95% CI: 0.95–5.57; p = 0.07). History of asthma (HR: 2.22; 95% CI: 1.02–4.83; p = 0.04) and hypercholesterolemia (HR: 1.99; 95% CI: 1.11–3.56; p = 0.02) were associated with shorter survival on multivariable analysis. Surgical patients with GBM who had a prior history of asthma or hypercholesterolemia had significantly higher relative risk for mortality on individual-characteristic and multivariable analyses
Variations between post- and pre-harvest seasons in stunting, wasting, and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices among children 6-23 months of age in lowland and midland agro-ecological zones of rural Ethiopia
Introduction: Food availability and access are strongly affected by seasonality in Ethiopia. However, there are little data on seasonal variation in Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices and malnutrition among 6-23 months old children in different agro-ecological zones of rural Ethiopia. Methods: Socio-demographic, anthropometry and IYCF indicators were assessed in post- and pre-harvest seasons among children aged 6–23 months of age randomly selected from rural villages of lowland and midland agro-ecological zones. Results: Child stunting and underweight increased from prevalence of 39.8% and 26.9% in post-harvest to 46.0% and 31.8% in pre-harvest seasons, respectively. The biggest increase in prevalence of stunting and underweight between post- and pre-harvest seasons was noted in the midland zone. Wasting decreased from 11.6% post-harvest to 8.5% pre-harvest, with the biggest decline recorded in the lowland zone. Minimum meal frequency, minimum acceptable diet and poor dietary diversity increased considerably in pre-harvest compared to post-harvest season in the lowland zone. Feeding practices and maternal age were predictors of wasting, while women’s dietary diversity and children age was predictor of child dietary diversity in both seasons. Conclusion: There is seasonal variation in malnutrition and IYCF practices among children 6-23 months of age with more pronounced effect in midland agro-ecological zone. A major contributing factor for child malnutrition may be poor feeding practices. Health information strategies focused on both IYCF practices and dietary diversity of mothers could be a sensible approach to reduce the burden of child malnutrition in rural Ethiopia
The role of angular momentum in the construction of electromagnetic multipolar fields
Multipolar solutions of Maxwell's equations are used in many practical
applications and are essential for the understanding of light-matter
interactions at the fundamental level. Unlike the set of plane wave solutions
of electromagnetic fields, the multipolar solutions do not share a standard
derivation or notation. As a result, expressions originating from different
derivations can be difficult to compare. Some of the derivations of the
multipolar solutions do not explicitly show their relation to the angular
momentum operators, thus hiding important properties of these solutions. In
this article, the relation between two of the most common derivations of this
set of solutions is explicitly shown and their relation to the angular momentum

–Fasilitas umum merupakan sarana yang dibutuhkan oleh masyarakat.Begitu pula dengan informasi fasilitas umum.Dibutuhkan informasi yang dapat diperoleh dengan cepat dan akurat.Untuk menjawab kebutuhan mayarakat, maka dibutuhkan sebuah aplikasi yang dapat memberikan informasi dengan cepat dan akurat.Aplikasi ini dibuat berbasis web service sehingga memudahkan pihak luar untuk memperoleh informasi yang akurat yang dapat diolah berdasarkan kebutuhan.Client aplikasi ini dibuat berbasis Android yang terhubung dengan layanan google maps.Sehingga masyarakat yang menggunakan smartphone android dapat dengan mudah memperoleh informasi tersebut karena informasi lokasi yang ditampilkan dalam bentuk peta digital.Dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode DAD (Disciplined Agile Delivery).Metode DAD terdiri atas 3 fase yaitu fase inception, fase construction dan fase transition.Berdasarkan dengan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa aplikasi fasilitas umum ini dapat membantu pengguna dalam memperoleh informasi dengan cepat dan akurat.Selain itu aplikasi ini juga membantu pihak luar untuk memperoleh data yang akurat yang dapat diolah berdasarkan kenutuhan pengguna
Effect of Primidone on Dentate Nucleus γ-Aminobutyric Acid Concentration in Patients With Essential Tremor
OBJECTIVES:
It is not known whether current use of the medication primidone affects brain γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentrations. This is an important potential confound in studies of the pathophysiology of essential tremor (ET), one of the most common neurological diseases. We compared GABA concentrations in the dentate nucleus in 6 ET patients taking primidone versus 26 ET patients not taking primidone.
METHODS:
(1)H magnetic resonance spectroscopy was performed using a 3.0-T Siemens Tim Trio scanner. The MEGA-PRESS J-editing sequence was used for GABA detection in 2 cerebellar volumes of interest (left and right) that included the dentate nucleus.
RESULTS:
The right dentate GABA concentration was similar in the 2 groups (2.21 ± 0.46 [on primidone] vs 1.93 ± 0.39 [not on primidone], P = 0.15), as was the left dentate GABA concentration (1.61 ± 0.35 [on primidone] vs 1.67 ± 0.34 [not on primidone], P = 0.72). The daily primidone dose was not associated with either right or left dentate GABA concentrations (P = 0.89 and 0.76, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS:
We did not find a difference in dentate GABA concentrations between 6 ET patients taking daily primidone and 26 ET patients not taking primidone. Furthermore, there was no association between daily primidone dose and dentate GABA concentration. These data suggest that it is not necessary to exclude ET patients on primidone from magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies of dentate GABA concentration, and if assessment of these concentrations was to be developed as a biomarker for ET, primidone usage would not confound interpretation of the results
