    An efficient algorithm for discrete modelling of tracer kinetics

    AbstractEffective study of certain health care problems and biomedical systems requires development and utilization of duly validated models for characterization of tracer kinetics in compartmental systems. This report presents an efficient algorithm for evaluation of discrete-time models in this context, starting from real patient data. The procedure evolved is systematic and involves parameter identification, model order determination and ascertaining the validity of the model: mathematical techniques proposed for this three-tier approach are robust as well as simple. A method for deriving state-space representations for multicompartmental systems directly from observations vector is also outlined. An illustrative example is given which demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm when applied to tracer analysis of the hepatobiliary system. The methodology proposed is recursive in nature such that it can be implemented very conveniently utilizing a microcomputer or even a programmable pocket calculator

    Majorizing measures for the optimizer

    The theory of majorizing measures, extensively developed by Fernique, Talagrand and many others, provides one of the most general frameworks for controlling the behavior of stochastic processes. In particular, it can be applied to derive quantitative bounds on the expected suprema and the degree of continuity of sample paths for many processes. One of the crowning achievements of the theory is Talagrand’s tight alternative characterization of the suprema of Gaussian processes in terms of majorizing measures. The proof of this theorem was difficult, and thus considerable effort was put into the task of developing both shorter and easier to understand proofs. A major reason for this difficulty was considered to be theory of majorizing measures itself, which had the reputation of being opaque and mysterious. As a consequence, most recent treatments of the theory (including by Talagrand himself) have eschewed the use of majorizing measures in favor of a purely combinatorial approach (the generic chaining) where objects based on sequences of partitions provide roughly matching upper and lower bounds on the desired expected supremum. In this paper, we return to majorizing measures as a primary object of study, and give a viewpoint that we think is very natural and clarifying from an optimization perspective. As our main contribution, we give an algorithmic proof of the majorizing measures theorem based on two parts: - We make the simple (but apparently new) observation that finding the best majorizing measure can be cast as a convex program. This also allows for efficiently computing the measure using off-the-shelf methods from convex optimization. - We obtain tree-based upper and lower bound certificates by rounding, in a series of steps, the primal and dual solutions to this convex program. While duality has conceptually been part of the theory since its beginnings, as far as we are aware no explicit link to convex optimization has been previously made.<p

    Deployment of genetic and genomic tools toward gaining a better understanding of Rice-Xanthomonasoryzae pv. oryzae interactions for development of durable bacterial blight resistant rice

    Rice is the most important food crop worldwide and sustainable rice production is important for ensuring global food security. Biotic stresses limit rice production significantly and among them, bacterial blight (BB) disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is very important. BB reduces rice yields severely in the highly productive irrigated and rainfed lowland ecosystems and in recent years; the disease is spreading fast to other rice growing ecosystems as well. Being a vascular pathogen, Xoo interferes with a range of physiological and biochemical exchange processes in rice. The response of rice to Xoo involves specific interactions between resistance (R) genes of rice and avirulence (Avr) genes of Xoo, covering most of the resistance genes except the recessive ones. The genetic basis of resistance to BB in rice has been studied intensively, and at least 44 genes conferring resistance to BB have been identified, and many resistant rice cultivars and hybrids have been developed and released worldwide. However, the existence and emergence of new virulent isolates of Xoo in the realm of a rapidly changing climate necessitates identification of novel broad-spectrum resistance genes and intensification of gene-deployment strategies. This review discusses about the origin and occurrence of BB in rice, interactions between Xoo and rice, the important roles of resistance genes in plant’s defense response, the contribution of rice resistance genes toward development of disease resistance varieties, identification and characterization of novel, and broad-spectrum BB resistance genes from wild species of Oryza and also presents a perspective on potential strategies to achieve the goal of sustainable disease management

    Breakage Assessment of Lath-Like Crystals in a Novel Laboratory-Scale Agitated Filter Bed Dryer

    Agitated filter bed dryer is often the equipment of choice in the pharmaceutical industry for the isolation of potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) from the mother liquor and subsequent drying through intermittent agitation. The use of an impeller to promote homogeneous drying could lead to undesirable size reduction of the crystal product due to shear deformation induced by the impeller blades during agitation, potentially causing off-specification product and further downstream processing issues. An evaluation of the breakage propensity of crystals during the initial development stage is therefore critical. A new versatile scale-down agitated filter bed dryer (AFBD) has been developed for this purpose. Carbamazepine dihydrate crystals that are prone to breakage have been used as model particles. The extent of particle breakage as a function of impeller rotational speed, size of clearance between the impeller and containing walls and base, and solvent content has been evaluated. A transition of breakage behaviour is observed, where carbamazepine dihydrate crystals undergo fragmentation first along the crystallographic plane [00l]. As the crystals become smaller and more equant, the breakage pattern switches to chipping. Unbound solvent content has a strong influence on the breakage, as particles break more readily at high solvent contents. The laboratory-scale instrument developed here provides a tool for comparative assessment of the propensity of particle attrition under agitated filter bed drying conditions

    A Honeycomb Proportional Counter for Photon Multiplicity Measurement in the ALICE Experiment

    A honeycomb detector consisting of a matrix of 96 closely packed hexagonal cells, each working as a proportional counter with a wire readout, was fabricated and tested at the CERN PS. The cell depth and the radial dimensions of the cell were small, in the range of 5-10 mm. The appropriate cell design was arrived at using GARFIELD simulations. Two geometries are described illustrating the effect of field shaping. The charged particle detection efficiency and the preshower characteristics have been studied using pion and electron beams. Average charged particle detection efficiency was found to be 98%, which is almost uniform within the cell volume and also within the array. The preshower data show that the transverse size of the shower is in close agreement with the results of simulations for a range of energies and converter thicknesses.Comment: To be published in NIM

    Restricting quark matter models by gravitational wave observation

    We consider the possibilities for obtaining information about the equation of state for quark matter by using future direct observational data on gravitational waves. We study the nonradial oscillations of both fluid and spacetime modes of pure quark stars. If we observe the ff and the lowest wIIw_{\rm II} modes from quark stars, by using the simultaneously obtained radiation radius we can constrain the bag constant BB with reasonable accuracy, independently of the ss quark mass.Comment: To appear in Phys.     Mass Splitting and Production of Σc0\Sigma_c^0 and Σc++\Sigma_c^{++} Measured in 500GeV500 {GeV} π\pi^- -N Interactions

    From a sample of 2722±782722 \pm 78 Λc+\Lambda_c^+ decaying to the pKπ+pK^-\pi^+ final state, we have observed, in the hadroproduction experiment E791 at Fermilab, 143±20143 \pm 20 Σc0\Sigma_c^0 and 122±18122 \pm 18 Σc++\Sigma_c^{++} through their decays to Λc+π±\Lambda_c^+ \pi^{\pm}. The mass difference M(Σc0)M(Λc+M(\Sigma_c^0) - M(\Lambda_c^+) is measured to be (167.38±0.29±0.15)MeV(167.38\pm 0.29\pm 0.15) {MeV}; for M(Σc++)M(Λc+)M(\Sigma_c^{++}) - M(\Lambda_c^+), we find (167.76±0.29±0.15)MeV(167.76\pm 0.29\pm0.15) {MeV}. The rate of Λc+\Lambda_c^+ production from decays of the Σc\Sigma_c triplet is (22\pm 2\pm 3) {%} of the total Λc+\Lambda_c^+ production assuming equal rate of production from all three, as measured for Σc0\Sigma_c^0 and Σc++\Sigma_c^{++}. We do not observe a statistically significant Σc\Sigma_c baryon-antibaryon production asymmetry. The xFx_F and pt2p_t^2 spectra of Λc+\Lambda_c^+ from Σc\Sigma_c decays are observed to be similar to those for all Λc+\Lambda_c^+'s produced.Comment: 15 pages, uuencoded postscript 3 figures uuencoded, tar-compressed fil

    Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and photons at SPS energies are discussed. Fluctuations are studied by controlling the centrality of the reaction and rapidity acceptance of the detectors.     Suppression of High-p_T Neutral Pion Production in Central Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 17.3 GeV Relative to p+C and p+Pb Collisions

    Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in p+C and p+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 17.4 GeV at mid-rapidity 2.3 < eta_lab < 3.0 over the range 0.7< p_T < 3.5 GeV/c. The spectra are compared to pi0 spectra measured in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 17.3 GeV in the same experiment. For a wide range of Pb+Pb centralities (N_part < 300) the yield of pi0's with p_T > 2 GeV/c is larger than or consistent with the p+C or p+Pb yields scaled with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (N_coll), while for central Pb+Pb collisions with N_part > 350 the pi0 yield is suppressed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
