Quantum trajectories for the realistic measurement of a solid-state charge qubit
We present a new model for the continuous measurement of a coupled quantum
dot charge qubit. We model the effects of a realistic measurement, namely
adding noise to, and filtering, the current through the detector. This is
achieved by embedding the detector in an equivalent circuit for measurement.
Our aim is to describe the evolution of the qubit state conditioned on the
macroscopic output of the external circuit. We achieve this by generalizing a
recently developed quantum trajectory theory for realistic photodetectors [P.
Warszawski, H. M. Wiseman and H. Mabuchi, Phys. Rev. A_65_ 023802 (2002)] to
treat solid-state detectors. This yields stochastic equations whose (numerical)
solutions are the ``realistic quantum trajectories'' of the conditioned qubit
state. We derive our general theory in the context of a low transparency
quantum point contact. Areas of application for our theory and its relation to

The Cosmic Ray Hodoscopes for Testing Thin Gap Chambers at the Technion and Tel Aviv University
Thin gap chambers (TGCs) are built for the muon trigger chambers in the
endcap region of the LHC experiment ATLAS. More than 2500 ATLAS TGCs are being
produced at the Weizmann institute in Israel, and in Shandong University in
China. Detailed testing of these chambers is performed at the Technion and at
the Tel-Aviv University. Two cosmic ray hodoscopes for testing the operation of
these detectors were built in Israel. In these hodoscopes the response of the
chambers to energetic cosmic ray muons is recorded and analyzed. The hodoscopes
measure the exact time and space location of the cosmic ray hit and read out
the chambers which are being tested to verify that they produce a corresponding
signal within the required time interval. The cosmic ray hodoscopes built at
the Technion and at the Tel Aviv University for the test of ATLAS TGCs are
described. The mechanical structure, readout electronics, data acquisition and
operating scheme are presented. Typical TGC test results are presented and

Non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equations: Generalization to real-valued noise using quantum measurement theory
Do stochastic Schr\"odinger equations, also known as unravelings, have a
physical interpretation? In the Markovian limit, where the system {\em on
average} obeys a master equation, the answer is yes. Markovian stochastic
Schr\"odinger equations generate quantum trajectories for the system state
conditioned on continuously monitoring the bath. For a given master equation,
there are many different unravelings, corresponding to different sorts of
measurement on the bath. In this paper we address the non-Markovian case, and
in particular the sort of stochastic \sch equation introduced by Strunz, Di\'
osi, and Gisin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1801 (1999)]. Using a quantum measurement
theory approach, we rederive their unraveling which involves complex-valued
Gaussian noise. We also derive an unraveling involving real-valued Gaussian
noise. We show that in the Markovian limit, these two unravelings correspond to
heterodyne and homodyne detection respectively. Although we use quantum
measurement theory to define these unravelings, we conclude that the stochastic
evolution of the system state is not a true quantum trajectory, as the identity
of the state through time is a fiction.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Gravitational waves from single neutron stars: an advanced detector era survey
With the doors beginning to swing open on the new gravitational wave
astronomy, this review provides an up-to-date survey of the most important
physical mechanisms that could lead to emission of potentially detectable
gravitational radiation from isolated and accreting neutron stars. In
particular we discuss the gravitational wave-driven instability and
asteroseismology formalism of the f- and r-modes, the different ways that a
neutron star could form and sustain a non-axisymmetric quadrupolar "mountain"
deformation, the excitation of oscillations during magnetar flares and the
possible gravitational wave signature of pulsar glitches. We focus on progress
made in the recent years in each topic, make a fresh assessment of the
gravitational wave detectability of each mechanism and, finally, highlight key

CD4 cell count and the risk of AIDS or death in HIV-Infected adults on combination antiretroviral therapy with a suppressed viral load: a longitudinal cohort study from COHERE.
BACKGROUND: Most adults infected with HIV achieve viral suppression within a year of starting combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). It is important to understand the risk of AIDS events or death for patients with a suppressed viral load.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Using data from the Collaboration of Observational HIV Epidemiological Research Europe (2010 merger), we assessed the risk of a new AIDS-defining event or death in successfully treated patients. We accumulated episodes of viral suppression for each patient while on cART, each episode beginning with the second of two consecutive plasma viral load measurements 500 copies/µl, the first of two consecutive measurements between 50-500 copies/µl, cART interruption or administrative censoring. We used stratified multivariate Cox models to estimate the association between time updated CD4 cell count and a new AIDS event or death or death alone. 75,336 patients contributed 104,265 suppression episodes and were suppressed while on cART for a median 2.7 years. The mortality rate was 4.8 per 1,000 years of viral suppression. A higher CD4 cell count was always associated with a reduced risk of a new AIDS event or death; with a hazard ratio per 100 cells/µl (95% CI) of: 0.35 (0.30-0.40) for counts <200 cells/µl, 0.81 (0.71-0.92) for counts 200 to <350 cells/µl, 0.74 (0.66-0.83) for counts 350 to <500 cells/µl, and 0.96 (0.92-0.99) for counts ≥500 cells/µl. A higher CD4 cell count became even more beneficial over time for patients with CD4 cell counts <200 cells/µl.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the low mortality rate, the risk of a new AIDS event or death follows a CD4 cell count gradient in patients with viral suppression. A higher CD4 cell count was associated with the greatest benefit for patients with a CD4 cell count <200 cells/µl but still some slight benefit for those with a CD4 cell count ≥500 cells/µl

The impacts avoided with a 1.5 °C climate target: a global and regional assessment
The 2015 Paris Agreement commits countries to pursue efforts to limit the increase in global mean temperature to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. We assess the consequences of achieving this target in 2100 for the impacts that are avoided, using several indicators of impact (exposure to drought, river flooding, heat waves and demands for heating and cooling energy). The proportion of impacts that are avoided is not simply equal to the proportional reduction in temperature. At the global scale, the median proportion of projected impacts avoided by the 1.5 °C target relative to a rise of 4 °C ranges between 62 and 95% across sectors: the greatest reduction is for heat wave impacts. The 1.5 °C target results in impacts that would be between 27 and 62% lower than with the 2 °C target. For each indicator, there are differences in the proportions of impacts avoided between regions depending on exposure and the regional changes in climate (particularly precipitation). Uncertainty in the proportion of impacts that are avoided for a specific sector depends on the range in the shape of the relationship between global temperature change and impact, and this varies between sectors

Higher rates of triple-class virological failure in perinatally HIV-infected teenagers compared with heterosexually infected young adults in Europe
Objectives The aim of the study was to determine the time to, and risk factors for, triple-class virological failure (TCVF) across age groups for children and adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV infection and older adolescents and adults with heterosexually acquired HIV infection. Methods We analysed individual patient data from cohorts in the Collaboration of Observational HIV Epidemiological Research Europe (COHERE). A total of 5972 participants starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) from 1998, aged 500 HIV-1 RNA copies/mL despite >= 4 months of use. TCVF was defined as cumulative failure of two NRTIs, an NNRTI and a bPI. Results The median number of weeks between diagnosis and the start of ART was higher in participants with perinatal HIV infection compared with participants with heterosexually acquired HIV infection overall [17 (interquartile range (IQR) 4-111) vs. 8 (IQR 2-38) weeks, respectively], and highest in perinatally infected participants aged 10-14 years [49 (IQR 9-267) weeks]. The cumulative proportion with TCVF 5 years after starting ART was 9.6% [95% confidence interval (CI) 7.0-12.3%] in participants with perinatally acquired infection and 4.7% (95% CI 3.9-5.5%) in participants with heterosexually acquired infection, and highest in perinatally infected participants aged 10-14 years when starting ART (27.7%; 95% CI 13.2-42.1%). Across all participants, significant predictors of TCVF were those with perinatal HIV aged 10-14 years, African origin, pre-ART AIDS, NNRTI-based initial regimens, higher pre-ART viral load and lower pre-ART CD4. Conclusions The results suggest a beneficial effect of starting ART before adolescence, and starting young people on boosted PIs, to maximize treatment response during this transitional stage of development
