Analysis of Scramjet Flight Trajectories with Oxygen Enrichment
Scramjets are proposed as a second stage for a multi-stage access-to-space system. At present the upper limit of scramjet operation is expected to be Mach 12-14. Use of oxygen enrichment is a possible method for increasing the speed and altitude of scramjet operation. This paper involves mission analysis of scramjets using oxygen enrichment. It follows on from Smart & Tetlow [5], in which trajectory studies of a threestage rocket-scramjet-rocket access-to-space system were conducted. These calculations indicated that the net thrust (scramjet thrust - vehicle drag) of a hypersonic vehicle with three scramjet engine modules was reduced to very low levels above Mach 12. The current work examines the use of oxygen enrichment in the scramjet to increase net thrust above Mach 10. Results of the study indicate that an important effect of oxygen enrichment is to allow scramjet powered vehicle operation at higher altitude
Extending Native Winter Pasture Use with Spring Grazing Practices
Improving profitability will help sustain the economic viability of ranch operations. Feed costs typically represent well over half of annual cow-calf production costs. Two things, 1) grazing strategies aimed at increasing the proportion of feed supplied through grazing and 2) decreasing reliance on high-cost harvested forages, have the potential to improve profit
Strain induced half-metal to semiconductor transition in GdN
We have investigated the electronic structure and magnetic properties of GdN
as a function of unit cell volume. Based on the first-principles calculations
of GdN, we observe that there is a transformation in conduction properties
associated with the volume increase: first from halfmetallic to semi-metallic,
then ultimately to semiconducting. We show that applying stress can alter the
carrier concentration as well as mobility of the holes and electrons in the
majority spin channel. In addition, we found that the exchange parameters
depend strongly on lattice constant, thus the Curie temperature of this system
can be enhanced by applying stress or doping impurities.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
A 3D view of the Hyades stellar and sub-stellar population
Our scientific goal is to provide a 3D map of the nearest open cluster to the
Sun, the Hyades, combining the recent release of Gaia astrometric data,
ground-based parallaxes of sub-stellar member candidates and photometric data
from surveys which cover large areas of the cluster.
We combined the second Gaia release with ground-based H-band parallaxes
obtained with the infrared camera on the 2-m robotic Liverpool telescope to
astrometrically identify stellar and sub-stellar members of the Hyades, the
nearest open cluster to the Sun.
We find 1764 objects within 70 degree radius from the cluster center from the
Gaia second data release, whose kinematic properties are consistent with the
Hyades. We limit our study to 30 pc from the cluster center (47.03+/-0.20 pc)
where we identify 710 candidate members, including 85 and 385 in the core and
tidal radius, respectively. We determine proper motions and parallaxes of eight
candidate brown dwarf members and confirm their membership. Using the 3D
positions and a model-based mass-luminosity relation we derive a luminosity and
mass function in the 0.04 to 2.5 Msun range. We confirm evidence for mass
segregation in the Hyades and find a dearth of brown dwarfs in the core of the
cluster. From the white dwarf members we estimate an age of 640
Myr.
We identify a list of members in the Hyades cluster from the most massive
stars down to the brown dwarfs. We produce for the first time a 3D map of the
Hyades cluster in the stellar and sub-stellar regimes and make available the
list of candidate members.Comment: 27 pages, 2 appendices, 12 figures and 7 tables in main text,

Re-evaluation of cosmic ray cutoff terminology
The study of cosmic ray access to locations inside the geomagnetic field has evolved in a manner that has led to some misunderstanding and misapplication of the terminology originally developed to describe particle access. This paper presents what is believed to be a useful set of definitions for cosmic ray cutoff terminology for use in theoretical and experimental cosmic ray studies
‘RE/TRS’ is a Girl’s Subject: Talking about Gender and the Discourse of ‘Religion’ in UK Educational Spaces
This article addresses what appears to be a retrenchment into narrower forms of identification and an increased suspicion of difference in the context of educational policy in the UK – especially in relation to ‘Religious Education’. The adoption of standardized management protocols – ‘managerialism’ – across most if not all policy contexts including public educational spaces reduces spaces for encountering or addressing genuine difference and for discovering something new and different. A theory of the ‘feminization of religion’ associated historically with Barbara Welter, provides some useful insights as to why this might be, suggesting that those in British society who would prefer to see greater separation from ‘religion’ in ‘secular’ schools may well also be caught up in forms of gender stereotyping
Parallaxes of Five L Dwarfs with a Robotic Telescope
We report the parallax and proper motion of five L dwarfs obtained with observations from the robotic Liverpool Telescope. Our derived proper motions are consistent with published values and have considerably smaller errors. Based on our spectral type versus absolute magnitude diagram, we do not find any evidence for binaries among our sampleor, at least no comparable mass binaries. Their space velocities locate them within the thin disk, and based on the model comparisons, they have solar-like abundances. For all five objects, we derived effective temperature, luminosity, radius, gravity, and mass from an evolutionary model (CBA00) and our measured parallax; moreover, we derived their effective temperature by integrating observed optical and near-infrared spectra and model spectra (BSH06 or BT-Dusty) at longer wavelengths to obtain bolometric flux using the classical Stefan-Boltzmann law. Generally, the three temperatures for one object derived using two different methods with three models are consistent, although at lower temperature (e.g., for L4) the differences among the three temperatures are slightly larger than those at higher temperature (e.g., for L1).Peer reviewe
Classical generalized constant coupling model for geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets
A generalized constant coupling approximation for classical geometrically
frustrated antiferromagnets is presented. Starting from a frustrated unit we
introduce the interactions with the surrounding units in terms of an internal
effective field which is fixed by a self consistency condition. Results for the
magnetic susceptibility and specific heat are compared with Monte Carlo data
for the classical Heisenberg model for the pyrochlore and kagome lattices. The
predictions for the susceptibility are found to be essentially exact, and the
corresponding predictions for the specific heat are found to be in very good
agreement with the Monte Carlo results.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 2 columns. Discussion about the zero T value of

Modelling and simulation of operation and maintenance strategy for offshore wind farms based on multiagent system
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Maintenance of offshore wind turbines is a complex and costly undertaking which acts as a barrier to the development of this source of energy. Factors such as the size of the turbines, the size of the wind farms, their distance from the coast and meteorological conditions make it difficult for the stakeholders to select the optimal maintenance strategy. With the objective of reducing costs and duration of such operations it is important that new maintenance techniques are investigated. In this paper we propose a hybrid model of maintenance that is based on multi-agent systems; this allows for the modelling of systems with dynamic interactions between multiple parts. A multi-criteria decision algorithm has been developed to allow analysis and selection of different maintenance strategies. A cost model that includes maintenance action cost, energy loss and installation of monitoring system cost has been presented. For the purposes of this research we have developed a simulator using NetLogo software and have provided experimental results. The results show that employing the proposed hybrid maintenance strategy could increase wind farm productivity and reduce maintenance cost.Acknowledgement is made to European Union for the support of this research through the

Aerobic Training Intensity for Improved Endothelial Function in Heart Failure Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Objective. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) is widely utilised to assess endothelial function and aerobic exercise improves FMD in heart failure patients. The aim of this meta-analysis is to quantify the effect of aerobic training intensity on FMD in patients with heart failure. Background. A large number of studies now exist that examine endothelial function in patients with heart failure. We sought to add to the current literature by quantifying the effect of the aerobic training intensity on endothelial function. Methods. We conducted database searches (PubMed, Embase, ProQuest, and Cochrane Trials Register to June 30, 2016) for exercise based rehabilitation trials in heart failure, using search terms exercise training, endothelial function, and flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Results. The 13 included studies provided a total of 458 participants, 264 in intervention groups, and 194 in nonexercising control groups. Both vigorous and moderate intensity aerobic training significantly improved FMD. Conclusion. Overall both vigorous and moderate aerobic exercise training improved FMD in patients with heart failure
