fMRI protocol optimization for simultaneously studying small subcortical and cortical areas at 7 T
Most fundamental cognitive processes rely on brain networks that include both cortical and subcortical structures. Studying such networks using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) requires a data acquisition protocol that provides blood-oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) sensitivity across the entire brain. However, when using standard single echo, echo planar imaging protocols, researchers face a tradeoff between BOLD-sensitivity in cortex and in subcortical areas. Multi echo protocols avoid this tradeoff and can be used to optimize BOLD-sensitivity across the entire brain, at the cost of an increased repetition time. Here, we empirically compare the BOLD-sensitivity of a single echo protocol to a multi echo protocol. Both protocols were designed to meet the specific requirements for studying small, iron rich subcortical structures (including a relatively high spatial resolution and short echo times), while retaining coverage and BOLD-sensitivity in cortical areas. The results indicate that both sequences lead to similar BOLD-sensitivity across the brain at 7 T
Stability Studies for Photovoltaic Integration using Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Experiments
The electrical power network is gradually migrating from a centralized
generation approach to a decentralized generation with high shares of renewable
energy sources (RES). However, power systems with low shares of synchronous
generation and consequently low total system inertia, are vulnerable to power
imbalances. Such systems can experience frequency stability problems, such as
high frequency excursions and higher rates of change of frequency even under
small disturbances. This phenomenon is intensified when the grid under
investigation has low or no interconnections (islanded) and thus the challenge
for stable operation becomes more significant for the operators. This work
focuses on how the frequency stability is affected when a photovoltaic (PV)
inverter is integrated into a real non-interconnected distribution grid in
Cyprus. In order to capture the realistic interactions of this integration,
stability experiments in a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environment are performed
with the aim to provide insightful results for the grid operator.Comment: The 12th Mediterranean Conference on Power Generation, Transmission,

Exercise-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation in Twelve European Countries Results of the European Cardiac Rehabilitation Registry
AIM: Results from EuroCaReD study should serve as a benchmark to improve guideline adherence and treatment quality of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in Europe.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 2.054 CR patients in 12 European countries were derived from 69 centres. 76% were male. Indication for CR differed between countries being predominantly ACS in Switzerland (79%), Portugal (62%) and Germany (61%), elective PCI in Greece (37%), Austria (36%) and Spain (32%), and CABG in Croatia and Russia (36%). A minority of patients presented with chronic heart failure (4%). At CR start, most patients already were under medication according to current guidelines for the treatment of CV risk factors. A wide range of CR programme designs was found (duration 3 to 24weeks; total number of sessions 30 to 196). Patient programme adherence after admission was high (85%). With reservations that eCRF follow-up data exchange remained incomplete, patient CV risk profiles experienced only small improvements. CR success as defined by an increase of exercise capacity >25W was significantly higher in young patients and those who were employed. Results differed by countries. After CR only 9% of patients were admitted to a structured post-CR programme.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical characteristics of CR patients, indications and programmes in Europe are different. Guideline adherence is poor. Thus, patient selection and CR programme designs should become more evidence-based. Routine eCRF documentation of CR results throughout European countries was not sufficient in its first application because of incomplete data exchange. Therefore better adherence of CR centres to minimal routine clinical standards is requested
Search for extraterrestrial antineutrino sources with the KamLAND detector
We present the results of a search for extraterrestrial electron
antineutrinos ('s) in the energy range using the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of
4.53 kton-year, we identify 25 candidate events. All of the candidate events
can be attributed to background, most importantly neutral current atmospheric
neutrino interactions, setting an upper limit on the probability of B
solar 's converting into 's at
(90% C.L.), if we assume an undistorted shape. This limit
corresponds to a solar flux of or an event
rate of above the energy threshold
. The present data also allows us to set more
stringent limits on the diffuse supernova neutrino flux and on the annihilation
rates for light dark matter particles.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
A compact ultra-clean system for deploying radioactive sources inside the KamLAND detector
We describe a compact, ultra-clean device used to deploy radioactive sources
along the vertical axis of the KamLAND liquid-scintillator neutrino detector
for purposes of calibration. The device worked by paying out and reeling in
precise lengths of a hanging, small-gauge wire rope (cable); an assortment of
interchangeable radioactive sources could be attached to a weight at the end of
the cable. All components exposed to the radiopure liquid scintillator were
made of chemically compatible UHV-cleaned materials, primarily stainless steel,
in order to avoid contaminating or degrading the scintillator. To prevent radon
intrusion, the apparatus was enclosed in a hermetically sealed housing inside a
glove box, and both volumes were regularly flushed with purified nitrogen gas.
An infrared camera attached to the side of the housing permitted real-time
visual monitoring of the cable's motion, and the system was controlled via a
graphical user interface.Comment: Revised author affiliations, corrected typos, made minor improvements

Measurement of the 8B Solar Neutrino Flux with the KamLAND Liquid Scintillator Detector
We report a measurement of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate from
8B solar neutrinos based on a 123 kton-day exposure of KamLAND. The
background-subtracted electron recoil rate, above a 5.5 MeV analysis threshold
is 1.49+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.17(syst) events per kton-day. Interpreted as due to a
pure electron flavor flux with a 8B neutrino spectrum, this corresponds to a
spectrum integrated flux of 2.77+/-0.26(stat)+/-0.32(syst) x 10^6 cm^-2s^-1.
The analysis threshold is driven by 208Tl present in the liquid scintillator,
and the main source of systematic uncertainty is due to background from
cosmogenic 11Be. The measured rate is consistent with existing measurements and
with Standard Solar Model predictions which include matter enhanced neutrino
oscillation.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Detection of humoral and cellular immune response to anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 vaccine in breastfeeding women and naïve and previously infected individuals
This study explored humoral and cellular responses to anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in breastfeeding women and naïve and seropositive individuals in the first six months after vaccination.Sixty-one volunteers vaccinated with two doses of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine were enrolled in the study. In-house developed ELISA was used for the quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RBD-specific antibodies. Cell surface marker expression and intracellular IFN-γ analysis were carried out by flow cytometry. The concentrations of IFN-γ, IL-6 and TNF were determined by ELISA. A significant rise in anti-RBD IgG antibody levels was observed 14 days after the first vaccine dose (p < 0.0001) in serum and milk. The expression of CD28 on CD4+ T cells was significantly higher compared to baseline (p < 0.05). There was a significant increase (p ≤ 0.05) in B cell lymphocyte subset after revaccination, and increased percentage of CD80+ B cells. The expression of IFN-γ in peripheral blood lymphocytes, CD3+ T cells and serum was significantly increased (p < 0.05). No significant difference in immune response was observed between breastfeeding women and other study participants. The anti-SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine-induced measurable and durable immune response in breastfeeding women and in naïve and previously infected individuals
[11C]-l-Methionine positron emission tomography in the management of children and young adults with brain tumors
Only a few Methyl-[11C]-l-methionine (MET) positron emission tomography (PET) studies have focused on children and young adults with brain neoplasm. Due to radiation exposure, long scan acquisition time, and the need for sedation in young children MET-PET studies should be restricted to this group of patients when a decision for further therapy is not possible from routine diagnostic procedures alone, e.g., structural imaging. We investigated the diagnostic accuracy of MET-PET for the differentiation between tumorous and non-tumorous lesions in this group of patients. Forty eight MET-PET scans from 39 patients aged from 2 to 21 years (mean 15 ± 5.0 years) were analyzed. The MET tumor-uptake relative to a corresponding control region was calculated. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) was performed to determine the MET-uptake value that best distinguishes tumorous from non-tumorous brain lesions. A differentiation between tumorous (n = 39) and non-tumorous brain lesions (n = 9) was possible at a threshold of 1.48 of relative MET-uptake with a sensitivity of 83% and a specificity of 92%, respectively. A differentiation between high grade malignant lesions (mean MET-uptake = 2.00 ± 0.46) and low grade tumors (mean MET-uptake = 1.84 ± 0.31) was not possible. There was a significant difference in MET-uptake between the histologically homogeneous subgroups of astrocytoma WHO grade II and anaplastic astrocytoma WHO grade III (P = 0.02). MET-PET might be a useful tool to differentiate tumorous from non-tumorous lesions in children and young adults when a decision for further therapy is difficult or impossible from routine structural imaging procedures alone
Results from the first use of low radioactivity argon in a dark matter search
Liquid argon is a bright scintillator with potent particle identification
properties, making it an attractive target for direct-detection dark matter
searches. The DarkSide-50 dark matter search here reports the first WIMP search
results obtained using a target of low-radioactivity argon. DarkSide-50 is a
dark matter detector, using two-phase liquid argon time projection chamber,
located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The underground argon is
shown to contain Ar-39 at a level reduced by a factor (1.4 +- 0.2) x 10^3
relative to atmospheric argon. We report a background-free null result from
(2616 +- 43) kg d of data, accumulated over 70.9 live-days. When combined with
our previous search using an atmospheric argon, the 90 % C.L. upper limit on
the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section based on zero events found in
the WIMP search regions, is 2.0 x 10^-44 cm^2 (8.6 x 10^-44 cm^2, 8.0 x 10^-43
cm^2) for a WIMP mass of 100 GeV/c^2 (1 TeV/c^2 , 10 TeV/c^2).Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev.
First Results from KamLAND: Evidence for Reactor Anti-Neutrino Disappearance
KamLAND has been used to measure the flux of 's from distant
nuclear reactors. In an exposure of 162 tonyr (145.1 days) the ratio of
the number of observed inverse -decay events to the expected number of
events without disappearance is for energies 3.4 MeV. The deficit of events is
inconsistent with the expected rate for standard propagation at
the 99.95% confidence level. In the context of two-flavor neutrino oscillations
with CPT invariance, these results exclude all oscillation solutions but the
`Large Mixing Angle' solution to the solar neutrino problem using reactor
sources.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
