Magnetic effects at the interface between nonmagnetic oxides
The electronic reconstruction at the interface between two insulating oxides
can give rise to a highly-conductive interface. In analogy to this remarkable
interface-induced conductivity we show how, additionally, magnetism can be
induced at the interface between the otherwise nonmagnetic insulating
perovskites SrTiO3 and LaAlO3. A large negative magnetoresistance of the
interface is found, together with a logarithmic temperature dependence of the
sheet resistance. At low temperatures, the sheet resistance reveals magnetic
hysteresis. Magnetic ordering is a key issue in solid-state science and its
underlying mechanisms are still the subject of intense research. In particular,
the interplay between localized magnetic moments and the spin of itinerant
conduction electrons in a solid gives rise to intriguing many-body effects such
as Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions, the Kondo effect, and
carrier-induced ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors. The
conducting oxide interface now provides a versatile system to induce and

Common Origin for Surface Reconstruction and the Formation of Chains of Metal Atoms
During the fracture of nanocontacts gold spontaneously forms freely suspended
chains of atoms, which is not observed for the iso-electronic noble metals Ag
and Cu. Au also differs from Ag and Cu in forming reconstructions at its
low-index surfaces. Using mechanically controllable break junctions we show
that all the 5d metals that show similar reconstructions (Ir, Pt and Au) also
form chains of atoms, while both properties are absent in the 4d neighbor
elements (Rh, Pd, Ag), indicating a common origin for these two phenomena. A
competition between s and d bonding is proposed as an explanation
Pentagonal nanowires: a first-principles study of atomic and electronic structure
We performed an extensive first-principles study of nanowires in various
pentagonal structures by using pseudopotential plane wave method within the
density functional theory. Our results show that nanowires of different types
of elements, such as alkali, simple, transition and noble metals and inert gas
atoms, have a stable structure made from staggered pentagons with a linear
chain perpendicular to the planes of the pentagons and passing through their
centers. This structure exhibits bond angles close to those in the icosahedral
structure. However, silicon is found to be energetically more favorable in the
eclipsed pentagonal structure. These quasi one dimensional pentagonal nanowires
have higher cohesive energies than many other one dimensional structures and
hence may be realized experimentally. The effect of magnetic state are examined
by spin-polarized calculations. The origin of the stability are discussed by
examining optimized structural parameters, charge density and electronic band
structure, and by using analysis based on the empirical Lennard-Jones type
interaction. Electronic band structure of pentagonal wires of different
elements are discussed and their effects on quantum ballistic conductance are
mentioned. It is found that the pentagonal wire of silicon exhibits metallic

Origin of anomalously long interatomic distances in suspended gold chains
The discovery of long bonds in gold atom chains has represented a challenge
for physical interpretation. In fact, interatomic distances frequently attain
3.0-3.6 A values and, distances as large as 5.0 A may be seldom observed. Here,
we studied gold chains by transmission electron microscopy and performed
theoretical calculations using cluster ab initio density functional formalism.
We show that the insertion of two carbon atoms is required to account for the
longest bonds, while distances above 3 A may be due to a mixture of clean and

Resonant X-ray Scattering in Manganites - Study of Orbital Degree of Freedom -
Orbital degree of freedom of electrons and its interplay with spin, charge
and lattice degrees of freedom are one of the central issues in colossal
magnetoresistive manganites. The orbital degree of freedom has until recently
remained hidden, since it does not couple directly to most of experimental
probes. Development of synchrotron light sources has changed the situation; by
the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) technique the orbital ordering has
successfully been observed . In this article, we review progress in the recent
studies of RXS in manganites. We start with a detailed review of the RXS
experiments applied to the orbital ordered manganites and other correlated
electron systems. We derive the scattering cross section of RXS where the
tensor character of the atomic scattering factor (ASF) with respect to the
x-ray polarization is stressed. Microscopic mechanisms of the anisotropic
tensor character of ASF is introduced and numerical results of ASF and the
scattering intensity are presented. The azimuthal angle scan is a unique
experimental method to identify RXS from the orbital degree of freedom. A
theory of the azimuthal angle and polarization dependence of the RXS intensity
is presented. The theoretical results show good agreement with the experiments
in manganites. Apart from the microscopic description of ASF, a theoretical
framework of RXS to relate directly to the 3d orbital is presented. The
scattering cross section is represented by the correlation function of the
pseudo-spin operator for the orbital degree of freedom. A theory is extended to
the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and methods to observe excitations of

Measurement of tau polarization in e+ e- annihilation at sqrt{s}=58 GeV
The polarization of tau leptons in the reaction e+ e- --> tau+ tau- has been
measured using a e+e- collider, TRISTAN, at the center-of-mass energy of 58
GeV. From the kinematical distributions of daughter particles in tau --> e nu
nu-bar, mu nu nu-bar, rho nu or pi(K) nu decays, the average polarization of
tau- and its forward-backward asymmetry have been evaluated to be 0.012 +-
0.058 and 0.029 +- 0.057, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Genetic analysis of typical wet-type age-related macular degeneration and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy in Japanese population
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common cause of blindness in the elderly. Caucasian patients are predominantly affected by the dry form of AMD, whereas Japanese patients have predominantly the wet form of AMD and/or polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). Although genetic association in the 10q26 (ARMS2/HTRA1) region has been established in many ethnic groups for dry-type AMD, typical wet-type AMD, and PCV, the contribution of the 1q32 (CFH) region seem to differ among these groups. Here we show a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the ARMS2/HTRA1 locus is associated in the whole genome for Japanese typical wet-type AMD (rs10490924: \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}

GWAS of bipolar disorder
Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified several susceptibility loci for bipolar disorder (BD) and shown that the genetic architecture of BD can be explained by polygenicity, with numerous variants contributing to BD. In the present GWAS (Phase I/II), which included 2964 BD and 61 887 control subjects from the Japanese population, we detected a novel susceptibility locus at 11q12.2 (rs28456, P=6.4 × 10−9), a region known to contain regulatory genes for plasma lipid levels (FADS1/2/3). A subsequent meta-analysis of Phase I/II and the Psychiatric GWAS Consortium for BD (PGC-BD) identified another novel BD gene, NFIX (P best=5.8 × 10−10), and supported three regions previously implicated in BD susceptibility: MAD1L1 (P best=1.9 × 10−9), TRANK1 (P best=2.1 × 10−9) and ODZ4 (P best=3.3 × 10−9). Polygenicity of BD within Japanese and trans-European-Japanese populations was assessed with risk profile score analysis. We detected higher scores in BD cases both within (Phase I/II) and across populations (Phase I/II and PGC-BD). These were defined by (1) Phase II as discovery and Phase I as target, or vice versa (for ‘within Japanese comparisons’, Pbest~10−29, R2~2%), and (2) European PGC-BD as discovery and Japanese BD (Phase I/II) as target (for ‘trans-European-Japanese comparison,’ Pbest~10−13, R2~0.27%). This ‘trans population’ effect was supported by estimation of the genetic correlation using the effect size based on each population (liability estimates~0.7). These results indicate that (1) two novel and three previously implicated loci are significantly associated with BD and that (2) BD ‘risk’ effect are shared between Japanese and European populations
Real-Time Imaging of Rabbit Retina with Retinal Degeneration by Using Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography
Background: Recently, a transgenic rabbit with rhodopsin Pro 347 Leu mutation was generated as a model of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which is characterized by a gradual loss of vision due to photoreceptor degeneration. The purpose of the current study is to noninvasively visualize and assess time-dependent changes in the retinal structures of a rabbit model of retinal degeneration by using speckle noise-reduced spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Methodology/Principal Findings: Wild type (WT) and RP rabbits (aged 4–20 weeks) were investigated using SD-OCT. The total retinal thickness in RP rabbits decreased with age. The thickness of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) and between the external limiting membrane and Bruch’s membrane (ELM–BM) were reduced in RP rabbits around the visual streak, compared to WT rabbits even at 4 weeks of age, and the differences increased with age. However, inner nuclear layer (INL) thickness in RP rabbits did not differ from that of WT during the observation period. The ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness in RP rabbits increased near the optic nerve head but not around the visual streak in the later stages of the observation period. Hyper-reflective change was widely observed in the inner segments (IS) and outer segments (OS) of the photoreceptors in the OCT images of RP rabbits. Ultrastructural findings in RP retinas included the appearance of small rhodopsin-containing vesicles scattered in the extracellular space around the photoreceptors
