ELF propagation in the plasmasphere based on satellite observations of discrete and continuous forms

    Get PDF
The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a nonhomogeneous anisotropic medium is examined from the point of view of geometrical optics. In particular, the propagation of ELF waves in the magnetosphere is described in terms of the electron and ion densities and the intensity and inclination of the earth's magnetic field. The analysis of the variations of wave normal angle along the ray path is extended to include the effects of ions. A comparison of the relative importance of each of the above parameters in controlling the orientation of the wave normals is made in the region of the magnetosphere where most of the ion whistlers have been detected

Large-scale study of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system in Fornax

We present a Washington C and Kron-Cousins R photometric study of the globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster. A large areal coverage of 1 square degree around NGC 1399 is achieved with three adjoining fields of the MOSAIC II Imager at the CTIO 4-m telescope. Working on such a large field, we can perform the first indicative determination of the total size of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system. The estimated angular extent, measured from the NGC 1399 centre and up to a limiting radius where the areal density of blue globular clusters falls to 30 per cent of the background level, is 45 +/- 5 arcmin, which corresponds to 220 - 275 kpc at the Fornax distance. The bimodal colour distribution of this globular cluster system, as well as the different radial distribution of blue and red clusters, up to these large distances from the parent galaxy, are confirmed. The azimuthal globular cluster distribution exhibits asymmetries that might be understood in terms of tidal stripping of globulars from NGC 1387, a nearby galaxy. The good agreement between the areal density profile of blue clusters and a projected dark-matter NFW density profile is emphasized.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in A&

Different alterations of glomerular filtration rate and their association with uric acid in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes or with overweight/obesity

    Get PDF
GFR alterations were different between youths with T1D and with OW/OB. Higher uric acid, older age, and puberty were related to lower GFR values in OW/OB children. Longitudinal studies will determine if low GFR is consequence of a rapid GFR decline in pediatric patients with OW/OB.

    Get PDF

Association of glomerular hyperfiltration with serum chemokine levels and metabolic features in prepubertal children with overweight/obesity

Background and aims Glomerular hyperfiltration (GH) is proposed as one of the earliest events in obesity (OB)-associated renal disease. Children with GH and type-1 diabetes showed increased chemokine levels. Chemokine associations with glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and metabolic features in prepubertal children with overweight (OW)/OB are unknown. Methods and results Cross-sectional study. 75 prepubertal children (aged: 9.0 ± 1.7 years) with OW/OB were studied. Clinical and metabolic characteristics (including non-esterified fatty acids, NEFA) and GFR (combined Zappitelli equation) were assessed. GH was defined as GFR >135 ml/min.1.73 m2. Serum levels of regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted (RANTES)/CCL5, interleukin-8 (IL-8)/CXCL8 and monokine-induced by interferon-γ (MIG)/CXCL9 were measured by ELISA. Age- and sex-adjusted correlations and differences were tested. 48% of the cohort was female and 13% were OW, 54% OB and 33% severe OB. Prepubertal children with GH showed lower z-BMI (−12%), NEFA (−26%) and uric acid (−22%) than those without GH (all p 0.05). Adjusted correlations were significant for RANTES and z-BMI (r = 0.26; p < 0.05) and for MIG with z-BMI (r = −0.26; p < 0.05) and with NEFA (r = 0.27; p < 0.05). Conclusion GH was not associated with higher chemokine levels in prepubertal children with OW/OB. Decreased rather than elevated GFR values were correlated with obesity and worse metabolic profiles. Chemokines levels in children with severe OB suggest a regulation of the immune response. Follow-up studies are needed to address the clinical implications of these findings. Phase separation in a chaotic flow

The phase separation between two immiscible liquids advected by a bidimensional velocity field is investigated numerically by solving the corresponding Cahn-Hilliard equation. We study how the spinodal decomposition process depends on the presence -or absence- of Lagrangian chaos. A fully chaotic flow, in particular, limits the growth of domains and for unequal volume fractions of the liquids, a characteristic exponential distribution of droplet sizes is obtained. The limiting domain size results from a balance between chaotic mixing and spinodal decomposition, measured in terms of Lyapunov exponent and diffusivity constant, respectively.Comment: Minor changes - Version accepted for publication - Physical Review Letter
