Towards the development of a smart flying sensor: illustration in the field of precision agriculture

    Get PDF
Sensing is an important element to quantify productivity, product quality and to make decisions. Applications, such as mapping, surveillance, exploration and precision agriculture, require a reliable platform for remote sensing. This paper presents the first steps towards the development of a smart flying sensor based on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The concept of smart remote sensing is illustrated and its performance tested for the task of mapping the volume of grain inside a trailer during forage harvesting. Novelty lies in: (1) the development of a position-estimation method with time delay compensation based on inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors and image processing; (2) a method to build a 3D map using information obtained from a regular camera; and (3) the design and implementation of a path-following control algorithm using model predictive control (MPC). Experimental results on a lab-scale system validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology

The cyclical behavior of bank capital buffers in an emerging economy: size do matters

Using a panel of Colombian banks and quarterly data between 1996:1 and 2010:3, we study the relationship between short-run adjustments in bank capital buffers and the business cycle. We follow a partial adjustment framework and control for several variables that have been identified as important determinants of bank capital buffers in previous studies, and find that bank capital buffers vary overthe business cycle. We are able to identify a negative co-movement of capital buffers and and the business cycle. However, we also find that capital buffers of small and large banks behave asymmetrically during the business cycle. While the former appear to be constant over time, once the appropriate set of control variables is used, the latter present a countercyclical behavior. Our results suggest the possible need of the implementation of regulatory policy measures in developing countries.Bank capital bu§ers; Credit risk; Regulation; Colombia

A Structural Parametrization of the Brain Using Hidden Markov Models Based Paths in Alzheimer's Disease

    Get PDF
The usage of biomedical imaging in the diagnosis of dementia is increasingly widespread. A number of works explore the possibilities of computational techniques and algorithms in what is called Computed Aided Diagnosis. Our work presents an automatic parametrization of the brain structure by means of a path generation algorithm based on Hidden Markov Models. The path is traced using information of intensity and spatial orientation in each node, adapting to the structural changes of the brain. Each path is itself a useful way to extract features from the MRI image, being the intensity levels at each node the most straightforward. However, a further processing consisting of a modification of the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix can be used to characterize the textural changes that occur throughout the path, yielding more meaningful values that could be associated to the structural changes in Alzheimer's Disease, as well as providing a significant feature reduction. This methodology achieves high performance, up to 80.3\% of accuracy using a single path in differential diagnosis involving Alzheimer-affected subjects versus controls belonging to the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).TIC218, MINECO TEC2008-02113 and TEC2012-34306 projects, Consejería de Economía, Innovación, Ciencia y Empleo de la Junta de Andalucía P09-TIC-4530 and P11-TIC-71

Enzyme production of D-gluconic acid and glucose oxidase : successful tales of cascade reactions

    Get PDF
This review mainly focuses on the use of glucose oxidase in the production of D-gluconic acid, which is a reactant of undoubtable interest in different industrial areas. The enzyme has been used in numerous instances as a model reaction to study the problems of oxygen supply in bioreactors. One of the main topics in this review is the problem of the generated side product, hydrogen peroxide, as it is an enzymeinactivating reagent. Different ways to remove hydrogen peroxide have been used, such as metal catalysts and use of whole cells; however, the preferred method is the coupling glucose oxidase with catalase. The different possibilities of combining these enzymes have been discussed (use of free enzymes, independently immobilized enzymes or co-immobilized enzymes). Curiously, some studies propose the addition of hydrogen peroxide to this co-immobilized enzyme system to produce oxygen in situ. Other cascade reactions directed toward the production of gluconic acid from polymeric substrates will be presented; these will mainly involve the transformation of polysaccharides (amylases, cellulases, etc.) but will not be limited to those (e.g., gluconolactonase). In fact, glucose oxidase is perhaps one of most successful enzymes, and it is involved in a wide range of cascade reactions. Finally, other applications of the enzyme have been reviewed, always based on the production of D-gluconic acid, which produces a decrease in the pH, a decrease in the oxygen availability or the production of hydrogen peroxide; in many instances, cascade reactions are also utilized. Thus, this review presents many different cascade reactions and discusses the advantages/drawbacks of the use of co-immobilized enzymes

Complex network modelling of EEG band coupling in dyslexia: An exploratory analysis of auditory processing and diagnosis

Complex network analysis has an increasing relevance in the study of neurological disorders, enhancing the knowledge of brain’s structural and functional organization. Network structure and efficiency reveal different brain states along with different ways of processing the informa- tion. This work is structured around the exploratory analysis of the brain processes involved in low-level auditory processing. A complex network analysis was performed on the basis of brain coupling obtained from electroencephalography (EEG) data, while different auditory stim- uli were presented to the subjects. This coupling is inferred from the Phase-Amplitude coupling (PAC) from different EEG electrodes to explore differences between control and dyslexic sub- jects. Coupling data allows the construction of a graph, and then, graph theory is used to study the characteristics of the complex networks throughout time for control and dyslexic subjects. This results in a set of metrics including clustering coefficient, path length and small-worldness. From this, different characteristics linked to the temporal evolution of networks and coupling are pointed out for dyslexics. Our study revealed patterns related to Dyslexia as losing the small- world topology. Finally, these graph-based features are used to classify between control and dyslexic subjects by means of a Support Vector Machine (SVM).This work was supported by projects PGC2018-098813-B-C32 (Spanish “Ministerio de Cien- cia, Innovación y Universidades”), UMA20-FEDERJA-086 (Consejería de econnomía y conocimiento, Junta de Andalucía) and by European Regional Development Funds (ERDF). The search for a dyslexia diagnosis based on exclusively objective methods is currently a challenging task. Usually, this disorder is analyzed by means of behavioral tests prone to errors due to their subjective nature; e.g. the subject’s mood while doing the test can affect the results. Understanding the brain processes involved is key to proportionate a correct analysis and avoid these types of problems. It is in this task, biomarkers like electroencephalograms can help to obtain an objective measurement of the brain behavior that can be used to perform several analyses and ultimately making a diagnosis, keeping the human interaction at minimum. In this work, we used recorded electroencephalograms of children with and without dyslexia while a sound stimulus is played. We aim to detect whether there are significant differences in adaptation when the same stimulus is applied at different times. Our results show that following this process, a machine learning pipeline can be built with AUC values up to 0.73.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech
