    Chemical Gardens Under Mars Conditions: Imaging Chemical Garden Growth In Situ in an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope

The microscope chamber simulates the surface of Mars. We demonstrate that chemical gardens can form under the conditions of temperature and pressure existing on Mars in the presence of liquid water, silicates, and metal salts. Using chemical gardens from aluminum salts, tubes were formed where the external surface is formed principally by silicate and the inner surface is predominantly aluminum oxide-hydroxide.     We present the updated British Association for Sexual Health and HIV guidelines for HIV post-exposure prophylaxis following sexual exposure (PEPSE). This document includes a review of the current data to support the use of PEPSE, considers how to calculate the risks of infection after a potential exposure, and provides recommendations on when PEPSE should and should not be considered. We also review which medications to use for PEPSE, provide a checklist for initial assessment, and make recommendations for monitoring individuals receiving PEPSE. Special scenarios, cost-effectiveness of PEPSE, and issues relating to service provision are also discussed. Throughout the document, the place of PEPSE within the broader context of other HIV prevention strategies is considered

    Protocol for the CHEST Australia trial: A phase II randomised controlled trial of an intervention to reduce time-to-consult with symptoms of lung cancer

    © 2015, BMJ Publishing Group. All rights reserved. Introduction: Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, with 1.3 million new cases diagnosed every year. It has one of the lowest survival outcomes of any cancer because over two-thirds of patients are diagnosed when curative treatment is not possible. International research has focused on screening and community interventions to promote earlier presentation to a healthcare provider to improve early lung cancer detection. This paper describes the protocol for a phase II, multisite, randomised controlled trial, for patients at increased risk of lung cancer in the primary care setting, to facilitate early presentation with symptoms of lung cancer. Methods/analysis: The intervention is based on a previous Scottish CHEST Trial that comprised of a primary-care nurse consultation to discuss and implement a self-help manual, followed by selfmonitoring reminders to improve symptom appraisal and encourage help-seeking in patients at increased risk of lung cancer. We aim to recruit 550 patients from two Australian states: Western Australia and Victoria. Patients will be randomised to the Intervention (a health consultation involving a self-help manual, monthly prompts and spirometry) or Control (spirometry followed by usual care). Eligible participants are long-term smokers with at least 20 pack years, aged 55 and over, including ex-smokers if their cessation date was less than 15 years ago. The primary outcome is consultation rate for respiratory symptoms. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval has been obtained from The University of Western Australia's Human Research Ethics Committee (RA/4/1/6018) and The University of Melbourne Human Research Committee (1 441 433). A summary of the results will be disseminated to participants and we plan to publish the main trial outcomes in a single paper. Further publications are anticipated after further data analysis.     Serious mental health diagnoses in children on the child protection register: a record linkage study.

    Children with experience of maltreatment, abuse or neglect are known to have a higher prevalence of poor mental health. Child Protection Services identify children most at risk of harm and in need of intervention. Mental healthcare usage in this population is not well understood as registration data is not routinely linked to health records. We undertook data linkage to describe the population on the register, their mental healthcare usage and to calculate age- and sex-specific incidence rates of mental health outcomes. We analysed records from the Aberdeen City Council Child Protection Register and for mental health prescribing and referrals to child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) for the NHS Grampian region between 1st January 2012 and 31st December 2022. We identified 1,498 individuals with a Child Protection Register registration, of which 70% were successfully matched to health records. 20% of registrations occurred before birth and the median age of registration was 3 years. 10.1% of children with a registration ever received a mental health prescription, 5.1% for treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and 1.7% for treatment of depression. 18.9% received a referral to specialist outpatient Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Age- and sex- standardised incidence rates for mental health prescribing and referrals are higher for children with a child protection registration compared to the general population. Children identified as being at significant risk of harm and involved with child protection services are at greater risk of seeking or receiving professional mental health support than their peers. Clinical services should investigate additional ways to support this population’s mental well-being as a priority. Efforts to reduce the exposure of children to potentially harmful environments at a societal level should also be pursued

    Phenotyping of field-grown wheat in the UK highlights contribution of light response of photosynthesis and flag leaf longevity to grain yield

    Improving photosynthesis is a major target for increasing crop yields and ensuring food security. Phenotyping of photosynthesis in the field is critical to understand the limits to crop performance in agricultural settings. Yet, detailed phenotyping of photosynthetic traits is relatively scarce in field-grown wheat, with previous studies focusing on narrow germplasm selections. Flag leaf photosynthetic traits, crop development, and yield traits were compared in 64 field-grown wheat cultivars in the UK. Pre-anthesis and post-anthesis photosynthetic traits correlated significantly and positively with grain yield and harvest index (HI). These traits included net CO2 assimilation measured at ambient CO2 concentrations and a range of photosynthetic photon flux densities, and traits associated with the light response of photosynthesis. In most cultivars, photosynthesis decreased post-anthesis compared with pre-anthesis, and this was associated with decreased Rubisco activity and abundance. Heritability of photosynthetic traits suggests that phenotypic variation can be used to inform breeding programmes. Specific cultivars were identified with traits relevant to breeding for increased crop yields in the UK: pre-anthesis photosynthesis, post-anthesis photosynthesis, light response of photosynthesis, and Rubisco amounts. The results indicate that flag leaf longevity and operating photosynthetic activity in the canopy can be further exploited to maximize grain filling in UK bread wheat
