    New mites in the family caeculidae

    journal articleIn a collection of arachnids from the southwestern part of the United States made by the author and his wife, Dorothea, was a series of the little known mites of the family Caeculidae. These are fairly large mites measuring up to 1.6 mm. The common name of rake-legged mites is derived from the characteristic large spines on the front legs. Most of the specimens were taken in quite arid country from sweepings of shrubs and other low plants and from debris beneath. In addition to this material from the southwest, Dr. Willis J. Gertsch of the American Museum of Natural History very kindly loaned a collection from the southern part of the United States and from Puerto Rico. The types designated in this paper except as indicated otherwise are deposited in the zoological collection of the University of Utah

    journal articleIn a previous paper (1 ) the authors reported new records and gave descriptions and figures o f new species of terrestrial Isopods. Further studies of their collections reveal additional material of considerable interest, and some of the findings are recorded here. I t is believed that careful collecting in the southern and western part of the United States will bring to light many additional forms. The species described herein as new were taken largely while collecting arachnids and myriopods under logs, rocks or in leaf mold. Since relatively little is known regarding the distribution even of some of the better known forms, all unpublished records in the authors' collection are included. The types described as new in this paper are deposited in the Zoological Collections o f the University of Utah. Other species of Porcellio or allied genera which could not be assigned definitely at this time are held for future consideration. Several of these will likely prove new

    A comparative study of the urinogenital systems of an oviparous and two ovoviviparous species of the lizard genus sceloporus

    journal articleIn the comparative study of the urinogenital systems of the American lizards by Brooks (1906), all the species studied by him were oviparous. One of the genera, Sceloporus, is now known to contain ovoviviparous forms as well. The presence of both oviparity and ovoviviparity in the same genus suggested a comparison of the urinogenital systems in the two groups. Available for this study was a small series of S. microlepidotus disparilis Stejnegerf (13 females and 5 males), S. poinsetti Baird and Girard (3 females and 2 males), and S. olivaceus Smith (6 females and 4 males). The first two species are ovoviviparous (Mulaik 1936; Smith, 1936, p. 612) and the third, under which Brooks' S. floridanus was synonomized (Smith, 1939, p. I l l ) , is an oviparous form

    Implicit theories of a desire for fame

    The aim of the present studies was to generate implicit theories of a desire for fame among the general population. In Study 1, we were able to develop a nine-factor analytic model of conceptions of the desire to be famous that initially comprised nine separate factors; ambition, meaning derived through comparison with others, psychologically vulnerable, attention seeking, conceitedness, social access, altruistic, positive affect, and glamour. Analysis that sought to examine replicability among these factors suggested that three factors (altruistic, positive affect, and glamour) neither display factor congruence nor display adequate internal reliability. A second study examined the validity of these factors in predicting profiles of individuals who may desire fame. The findings from this study suggested that two of the nine factors (positive affect and altruism) could not be considered strong factors within the model. Overall, the findings suggest that implicit theories of a desire for fame comprise six factors. The discussion focuses on how an implicit model of a desire for fame might progress into formal theories of a desire for fame

    Sparse Exploratory Factor Analysis

    Sparse principal component analysis is a very active research area in the last decade. It produces component loadings with many zero entries which facilitates their interpretation and helps avoid redundant variables. The classic factor analysis is another popular dimension reduction technique which shares similar interpretation problems and could greatly benefit from sparse solutions. Unfortunately, there are very few works considering sparse versions of the classic factor analysis. Our goal is to contribute further in this direction. We revisit the most popular procedures for exploratory factor analysis, maximum likelihood and least squares. Sparse factor loadings are obtained for them by, first, adopting a special reparameterization and, second, by introducing additional [Formula: see text]-norm penalties into the standard factor analysis problems. As a result, we propose sparse versions of the major factor analysis procedures. We illustrate the developed algorithms on well-known psychometric problems. Our sparse solutions are critically compared to ones obtained by other existing methods

    Semi-sparse PCA

    It is well-known that the classical exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of data with more observations than variables has several types of indeterminacy. We study the factor indeterminacy and show some new aspects of this problem by considering EFA as a specific data matrix decomposition. We adopt a new approach to the EFA estimation and achieve a new characterization of the factor indeterminacy problem. A new alternative model is proposed, which gives determinate factors and can be seen as a semi-sparse principal component analysis (PCA). An alternating algorithm is developed, where in each step a Procrustes problem is solved. It is demonstrated that the new model/algorithm can act as a specific sparse PCA and as a low-rank-plus-sparse matrix decomposition. Numerical examples with several large data sets illustrate the versatility of the new model, and the performance and behaviour of its algorithmic implementation

    Can a leader be seen as too ethical? The curvilinear effects of ethical leadership

    Ethical leadership predicts important organizational outcomes such as decreased deviant and increased organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). We argued that due to the distinct nature of these two types of employee behaviors, ethical leadership decreases deviance in a linear manner (i.e., more ethical leadership leading to less deviance), but we expected ethical leadership to reveal a curvilinear relationship with respect to OCB. Specifically, we expected that, at lower levels, ethical leadership promotes OCB. However, at high levels, ethical leadership should lead to a decrease in these behaviors. We also examined a mechanism that explains this curvilinear pattern, that is, followers’ perceptions of moral reproach. Our predictions were supported in three organizational field studies and an experiment. These findings offer a better understanding of the processes that underlie the workings of ethical leadership. They also imply a dilemma for organizations in which they face the choice between limiting deviant employee behavior and promoting OCB
