    Os órgãos culturais brasileiros, de forma compartilhada com outras entidades do poder público e a sociedade civil, devem reconhecer e assumir a responsabilidade pelo patrimônio geológico. A terra, desde os primórdios da humanidade, revela ricos valores e significados culturais. O Iphan tem atuado na preservação de sítios de valor geológico e paleontológico por meio do tombamento de sítios e coleções e agora amplia sua ação por meio da instituição de um novo instrumento, a Paisagem Cultural Brasileira. Os geoparques são um importante modelo nos quais o Iphan pode exercer suas atribuições legais e atuar de forma compartilhada, amparado no reconhecimento internacional.Brazilian cultural institutions, in conjunction with other public authority entities and with the civil society, should recognize and take responsibility for the geological heritage. The Earth has revealed many rich cultural values and meanings since mankind's origin. Iphan has put into action the preservation of geological and archeological sites by means of declaring sites and collections as listed historical heritage items, and it now amplifies its action by establishing a new instrument - the Brazilian Cultural Landscape. The geoparks are an important model where Iphan may exercise its legal assignments and actuate on a shared manner, supported by the international recognition granted by UNESCO

    The city of Rio de Janeiro is known by its natural beauties. The mountains and the sea make the city the postcard ofBrazil. The sculpture of the carioca landscape is closely related to the augen gneiss, very resistant rock to the weatheringand, for this reason, it stands out in the relief. It gives form for Sugar Loaf and Corcovado, for example. Augen gneisswas used in the construction of most of the historical buildings of the city, including museums and churches, manyof them were built in the 19th century. It was used in the sculpture of ornaments, facades and frames of doors andwindows. The exploitation of the augen gneiss was presented by Jean Baptiste Debret in his book "Voyage Pittoresque etHistorique au Brésil". A picture of quarry is presented at Morro da Glória and describes the extraction method by slavelabor. He informes that the augen gneiss is softer, less expensive and more easily exploited. It was destined, mainly, tothe parts of the buildings that should be sculpted. This rock is still present in an important event of the history of thebrazilian arts. Pedra do Sal, a stairway sculpted in the augen gneiss Downtown, was the place that African people metin the past to tell their histories, to do religious cults and to sing.     Assessment of interventions in fuel management zones using remote sensing

    Every year, wildfires strike the Portuguese territory and are a concern for public entities and the population. To prevent a wildfire progression and minimize its impact, Fuel Management Zones (FMZs) have been stipulated, by law, around buildings, settlements, along national roads, and other infrastructures. FMZs require monitoring of the vegetation condition to promptly proceed with the maintenance and cleaning of these zones. To improve FMZ monitoring, this paper proposes the use of satellite images, such as the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, along with vegetation indices and extracted temporal characteristics (max, min, mean and standard deviation) associated with the vegetation within and outside the FMZs and to determine if they were treated. These characteristics feed machine-learning algorithms, such as XGBoost, Support Vector Machines, K-nearest neighbors and Random Forest. The results show that it is possible to detect an intervention in an FMZ with high accuracy, namely with an F1-score ranging from 90% up to 94% and a Kappa ranging from 0.80 up to 0.89.This work is supported by NOVA LINCS (UIDB/04516/2020) and ALGORITMI (UIDB/00319/2020) with the financial support of FCT- Fundação para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, through national funds; This work is also supported by the project Floresta Limpa (PCIF/MOG/0161/2019

    Performance of lactate in discriminating bacterial meningitis from enteroviral meningitis

    The cytological and biochemical examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been used for the presumed diagnosis of bacterial meningitis until the final microbiological results are achieved. We assessed the ability of CSF lactate in comparison with other CSF parameters to discriminate bacterial and enteroviral community acquired meningitis. We included 1,187 CSF samples of acute community-acquired meningitis, being 662 cases of bacterial and 525 of enteroviral meningitis. Lactate concentration (mg/dL), leukocyte count/mm3 , protein (mg/dL), and glucose (mg/dL) were compared between bacterial and viral meningitis. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess diagnostic performance. CSF leukocytes, CSF protein and CSF lactate were significantly higher in bacterial meningitis cases (P<0.0001). CSF glucose was significantly lower in bacterial meningitis cases (P<0.0001). CSF lactate showed the best predictive ability with an area under the curve of 0.944 (95% CI 0.929 – 0.959). Considering a cut off of CSF lactate of 30 mg/dL, the sensitivity and specificity for bacterial meningitis were 84.1% and 99%, respectively. In the cytological and biochemical CSF analysis, CSF lactate was the most accurate marker for bacterial meningitis

    DEFINIÇÃO DE PAINEL DE INDICADORES DE DESEMPENHO PARA INSTITUIÇÕES COMUNITÁRIAS DE ENSINO SUPERIOR

    O estudo objetiva desenvolver um painel de indicadores de desempenho para auxiliar no processo de gestão das instituições comunitárias de ensino superior. Este estudo está baseado em uma abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa, utilizando grupo focal com gestores de uma IES comunitária, no sentido de propor um conjunto de indicadores elencados dentro de 4 (quatro) constructos: (I) Ensino; (II) Pesquisa; (III) Extensão; (IV) Gestão. A avaliação do grau de importância dos indicadores propostos no painel ocorreu por meio de aplicação de questionário a 9 (nove) gestores de IES comunitárias, sendo 3 (três) pertencentes ao Sistema ACAFE; 2 (duas) de IES associadas ao COMUNG; e 4 (quatro) confessionais. Estabeleceu-se como ponto de corte, os indicadores que atingiram uma média inferior a 3,5, excluindo-se do painel 4 indicadores. A principal contribuição deste estudo é a elaboração de um painel de indicadores de desempenho com 118 indicadores associados a 4 (quatro) constructos e 14 (quatorze) sub-constructos, podendo ser aplicado em Instituições de Ensino Superior comunitárias, alinhando ao planejamento estratégico de longo prazo

    Partial replication in the database state machine

    This paper investigates the use of partial replication in the Database State Machine approach introduced ear- lier for fully replicated databases. It builds on the or- der and atomicity properties of group communication primitives to achieve strong consistency and proposes two new abstractions: Resilient Atomic Commit and Fast Atomic Broadcast. Even with atomic broadcast, partial replication re- quires a termination protocol such as atomic commit to ensure transaction atomicity. With Resilient Atomic Commit our termination protocol allows the commit of a transaction despite the failure of some of the par- ticipants. Preliminary performance studies suggest that the additional cost of supporting partial replica- tion can be mitigated through the use of Fast Atomic Broadcast

    O longo período da pandemia da Covid-19 trouxe muitos transtornos de muitos tipos. Talvez um dos mais graves vamos encontrar nas atividades escolares. Por razões de má administração diante de uma situação inusitada, os gestores da Educação tomaram várias decisões que se mostraram problemáticas. A situação mais difícil veio com o ensino a distância, do tipo home office. O acesso aos necessários equipamentos não ocorreu, por causa da pobreza de algumas famílias e a falta de suporte do governo. Da parte dos professores, não houve um treinamento para o uso dos equipamentos, nem ajuda para como transformar as aulas presenciais em aulas à distância. Esse artigo tem por objetivo fazer uma breve reflexão sobre a situação vivenciada pelos docentes, trazendo dois depoimentos que mostram a problemática com ênfase nas dificuldades de ação pedagógica de dois professores do Ensino Fundamental, de dois estados diferentes do Brasil- Bahia e Minas Gerais. Esse artigo também ressalta que a situação pandêmica, pelo menos por um momento, fez saltar aos olhos dos mais atentos, a ausência de investimentos na educação do país, enquanto que outros seguiram culpando o professor pelas mazelas educacionais. A discussão aqui proposta é baseada em autores como Bourdieu (2014, 7ed.), Cagliari (2003), entre outros

    The transcribed ultraconserved region uc.160+ enhances processing and A-to-I editing of the miR-376 cluster : hypermethylation improves glioma prognosis

    Transcribed ultraconserved regions (T-UCRs) are noncoding RNAs derived from DNA sequences that are entirely conserved across species. Their expression is altered in many tumor types, and, although a role for T-UCRs as regulators of gene expression has been proposed, their functions remain largely unknown. Herein, we describe the epigenetic silencing of the uc.160+ T-UCR in gliomas and mechanistically define a novel RNA-RNA regulatory network in which uc.160+ modulates the biogenesis of several members of the miR-376 cluster. This includes the positive regulation of primary microRNA (pri-miRNA) cleavage and an enhanced A-to-I editing on its mature sequence. As a consequence, the expression of uc.160+ affects the downstream, miR-376-regulated genes, including the transcriptional coregulators RING1 and YY1-binding protein (RYBP) and forkhead box P2 (FOXP2). Finally, we elucidate the clinical impact of our findings, showing that hypermethylation of the uc.160+ CpG island is an independent prognostic factor associated with better overall survival in lower-grade gliomas, highlighting the importance of T-UCRs in cancer pathophysiology.Peer reviewe

    Origin and distribuition of sciatic nerves of the Galea

    O preá do semiárido nordestino (Galea spixii Wagler, 1831) é um roedor pertencente à família Caviidae. Pouca literatura é encontrada sobre essa espécie em relação a sua morfologia e seu comportamento ambiental e reprodutivo. Com o objetivo de entender a morfologia geral, em foco, na inervação do membro pélvico dessa espécie, neste trabalho, foi explorado o nervo isquiático, o qual é o maior de todos os nervos do organismo. Foram utilizados 10 preás (cinco machos e cinco fêmeas) que vieram a óbito por causas naturais, oriundos do Centro de Multiplicação de Animais Silvestres da Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido (CEMAS/UFERSA). Os animais foram fixados após o óbito em solução aquosa de formaldeído 10% e, após 48 horas de imersão nessa solução, foram dissecados para exposição do nervo isquiático. Dessa forma, os dados obtidos foram compilados em tabelas e expressos em desenhos esquemáticos e fotografias. Os pares de nervos isquiáticos originaram-se de raízes ventrais de L6L7S1 (70%) e de L7S1S2 (30%) e distribuíram-se pelos músculos glúteo profundo, bíceps femural, semitendinoso e semimembranoso.The Galea of the semi-arid northeast (Galea spixii Wagler, 1831) is a rodent belonging to the family Caviidae. Little literature is found on this species in relation to morphology, environmental and reproductive behavior. With a view to understanding the general morphology, particularly, in the innervation of the pelvic limb of this species, ponder the sciatic nerve, which is the largest of all the nerves of the body. 10 cavies were used (five males, five females) that they had died of natural causes, originating from breeders scientific, legally licensed by IBAMA, the UFRSA, Mossoró, RN. The animals were fixed after the death in an aqueous solution of formaldehyde 10% and after 48 hours of immersion in it, were dissected to expose the sciatic nerve. Thus, the data were compiled in tables and expressed in drawings and photographs. The pairs of sciatic nerves were derived from ventral roots L6L7S1 (70%) and L7S1S2 (30%) and were distributed by the deep gluteal muscles, biceps femural, semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles
