Andrological Methods of Predicting the Pregnancy Outcome of an \u3ci\u3ein vitro\u3c/i\u3e Fertilization Program

    Get PDF
Current advances in fertility treatment emphasize extracorporeal procedures, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF)/embryo transfer. IVF is now used to treat several types of infertility, including male factor and idiopathic infertility. However, IVF is time consuming, costly, unpredictable, and often yields a low pregnancy rate. Thus, it would be valuable to devise laboratory procedures for better prediction of IVF outcome. The male infertility rate can be as high as 50%. Since sperm count and percent of motility alone do not appear to be strong predictors of IVF outcome especially when these parameters are not severely abnormal, a multivariable analysis of other parameters was made. In addition, because many IVF centers use swim-up preparations of semen samples for insemination, whole semen and swim-up samples obtained for IVF were analyzed. Major sperm motion characteristics (such as sperm mean velocity and linearity), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), creatine kinase (CK) activity in whole semen and sperm, hypoosmotic swelling test (HOST), and sperm morphology were evaluated

An Overview of ISS Human Research Data Sharing

    Get PDF
This presentation is an attempt to clarify several aspects of the current procedures, tools, and challenges of human data sharing for ISS flight activities. There are several binary variables to consider with respect to human spaceflight data sharing: Medical vs. Research, Active Flight vs. Non-Flight, Tactical vs. Supplemental, Prospective vs. Retrospective. This presentation will address each of these variables and how they determine which processes and mechanisms are used both to document and facilitate human data sharing. Some of these variables will likely be so obvious that they induce eye rolls. Please bear with us. We're trying to make these slides fairly rudimentary for a wide, (eventually) international audience. Other distinctions are made if data originated from a NASA vs. IP crewmember. Those distinctions will be made apparent when needed

How to increase agricultural entrepreneurial skills

    Get PDF
Because of socio-economic level, rapid change of international attention to globalization issue in various economic sectors such as agriculture is almost impossible and leads to the national and global economy. Based on the agriculture driven economic development of the country considered, the issue of entrepreneurship in agriculture would seem imperative. Entrepreneurship in the agricultural as an engine of economic development in this sector is considered. It can create jobs and economic growth, social welfare in agriculture plays an important role. Entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector improve the entrepreneurial skills and training process which contributes to the development of infrastructure agriculture as one of the main goals of the agricultural sector. This paper provides an overview of the method and the concept of entrepreneurship as one of the fundamental issues in the agriculture is pointed out. After introducing the concept to entrepreneurial skills in agriculture, techniques to enhance entrepreneurial skills in the agricultural sector in order to achieve the objectives of agricultural development will be discussed

Evaluation of the antifungal activity of the Iranian thyme essential oils on the postharvest pathogens of Strawberry fruits

    Get PDF
Postharvest diseases cause considerable losses to harvested fruits and vegetables during transportation and storage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal potential of Thymus danensis and Thymus carmanicus against four postharvest pathogenic fungi (Rhizopus stolonifer, Penicillium digitatum, Aspergillus niger and Botrytis cinerea) which can reduce the shelf life of strawberry fruit. The chemical composition of plant oils was determined by capillary gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Antifungal assays were carried out in vitro using PDA plates. Antifungal potential was found for 2 analysed essential oils. T. carmanicus oils have chemical compositions characterized by carvacrol (70%), p-cymene (12.4%) and γ-terpinene (2.5%) as the major components while the major constituents of the T. danensis were thymol (64.8%), α-terpinene (11.3%) and p-cymene (7.9%). Thymus sp. oils showed inhibitory effect even at low concentration (300 μl/L) against B. cinerea and R. stolonifer and showed inhibitory effect against A. niger and P. digitatum at 600 μl/L. Both essential oils tested in vivo at the preliminary concentration exhibited inhibitory activityagainst the four pathogens.Key words: Thymus danensis, Thymus carmanicus, antifungal activity

Level of information & communication technology (ICT) usage among ESL teachers in Malaysia

    Get PDF
The current study attempted to identify the level of (ICT) usage among ESL teachers, the difference between the level of ICT usage based on gender and age, the teachers’ perception towards ICT usage and the barriers faced by teachers. This study was a quantitative study using the descriptive survey approach. The total number of participants was 90 ESL student teachers. Data collection involved the use of a questionnaire and the results were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings showed that the level of ICT among teachers was moderate to high. The findings also revealed that females used ICT more than males and younger teachers used ICT more than older teachers. In addition, the level of perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness was moderate to high and high respectively. The findings also indicated that the level of barrier among teachers was low

A Variable Metric Variant of the Karmarkar Algorithm for Linear Programming

    Get PDF
The most time-consuming part of the Karmarkar algorithm for linear programming is the projection of a vector onto the nullspace of a matrix that changes at each iteration. We present a variant of the Karmarkar algorithm that uses standard variable-metric techniques in an innovative way to approximate this projection. In limited tests, this modification greatly reduces the number of matrix factorizations needed for the solution of linear programming problems

Detection of bovine coronavirus by RT-PCR in a field study

    Get PDF
In the present study we used RT-PCR assay for detecting of BCoV, targeting a 730 bp fragment of the nucleocapsid (N) gene of BCoV with published primers that could amplify all BCoV strains. We evaluated presence of BCoV in diarrheic and nondiarrheic samples. 108 faecal samples from diarrheic calves and 80 faecal samples from nondiarrheic calves collected. In 13 of 108 diarrheic samples both ELISA and RT-PCR detected BCoV. In 4 of 80 samples second group (non diarrheic) BCoV was detected by RT-PCR only not capture ELISA. This report is the first detection of BCoV in Iran. The results suggest that RT-PCR is more sensitive than ELISA method to detect BCoV, especially in subclinical cases. Because these animals shed a low amount of virus in faeces we need to apply sensitive techniques, such as RT-PCR, nested PCR and real time RT-PCR
