Linking a Pharmaceutical Chemistry Workshop to Pharmacy Practice

This paper describes the design and implementation of a workshop to enhance pharmacy students’ appreciation of the importance of chemistry for pharmacy practice. The workshop was designed to form part of the practical work of two modules taught in the second year of the MPharm degree. In this mandatory workshop, second year pharmacy students were required to spot in the dispensary drugs based on their chemical properties like chirality, their origin and chemical structure. The lecturers involved in the workshop showed examples of the application of chemistry in the day to day work of the dispensary (e.g. calculating the dose for a patient in millimoles or how small modifications from a natural product can change its ability to cross the blood-brain-barrier). Feedback from participating students was collected via two survey instruments to examine the impact of the intervention. The survey results showed a clear shift towards a more positive perception by students of the chemistry taught in the MPharm curriculum

Experiencia realizada durante el curso 1977-1978, en la clase de ingles de tercero de B.U.P

La presente experiencia se inició cuando un grupo de alumnos leyó ocasionalmente un artículo periodístico acerca del tema de la cogestión en la escuela. Posteriormente, el profesor entraría en contacto con el autor de dicho artículo y, después de diversas conversaciones, decidió llevar el sistema a la práctica. Así, estuvo realizando durante un año una primera experiencia piloto con un solo grupo, llegando a establecer unas excelentes relaciones de trabajo. Se dió una actitud muy positiva en la clase hacia el tema, y los alumnos reaccionaron entusiasmadamente. Finalizado el segundo curso de B.U.P.decidieron mantener el sistema durante el próximo año. La importancia de dicho sistema radica en el hecho de que el profesor cambió su posición autoritaria respecto al grupo por una posición de facilitación y ayuda en la tarea del mismo. La ausencia de exámenes, así como el hecho de que el marco global fuese el mismo para todos los alumnos, intentaban eliminar la competitividad entre los estudiantes y, a la vez, estimular el aprendizaje por propio interés. Se decidió dividir a los cuarenta alumnos en ocho grupos, correspondientes a otros tantos niveles de conocimiento. Dado que tres horas por semana eran opcionales, el trabajo semanal se distribuyó de la siguiente forma: 1er. día: lectura por grupos (literatura inglesa y americana) 2º: día: trabajo de clase en dos diferentes niveles. 3er: día: presentación de la clase por parte de uno de los grupos. Es interesante observar que la lista de deseos y objetivos mencionados por los alumnos al iniciarse el curso presentó una ordenación valorativa distinta al finalizar el mismo.This experience began when a group of students saw a newspaper article about La cogestión en la escuela. The teacher got in touch with the author of the article and after several conversations it was decided to put the system into practice. The author had been teaching the trial group for one year and had established a good working relationship. There was a very positive attitude in the class towards the subject and the pupils reacted enthusiastically to the idea. At the end of the course 2 B.U.P. they decided on the system of working for the following year. The importance of this system was considered to be the fact that the teacher gave up his position of authority within the group to become an adviser and helper. The absence of exams and the same global mark for all the pupils was intented to eliminate competition among the students and to stimulate learning for its own pleasure. It was decided to divide the group of 40 into 8 groups which corresponded roughly to their level of knowledge. As they had 3 hours per week available the working week was distributed in the following way. day First: group reading (English and American novels) day Second: class work at two different levels day Third: presentation of a class by one of the groups. It is interesting to note that the aims and objectives mentioned by the pupils at the beginning of the course assumed a very different order by the end of the course

Phonon confinement and plasmon-phonon interaction in nanowire based quantum wells

Resonant Raman spectroscopy is realized on closely spaced nanowire based quantum wells. Phonon quantization consistent with 2.4 nm thick quantum wells is observed, in agreement with cross-section transmission electron microscopy measurements and photoluminescence experiments. The creation of a high density plasma within the quantized structures is demonstrated by the observation of coupled plasmon-phonon modes. The density of the plasma and thereby the plasmon-phonon interaction is controlled with the excitation power. This work represents a base for further studies on confined high density charge systems in nanowires

Augusto e historiografías periféricas: estudio de la figura de Augusto en la historiografía catalana

Resumen: Este trabajo es un estudio sobre la figura de Augusto en la historiografía catalana, desde los cronicones monásticos del siglo XII hasta las reivindicaciones nacionalistas del siglo XX. En el recorrido por este largo periodo veremos cómo Augusto pasa de ser parte de un mero sistema de datación, relacionado con el nacimiento de Cristo, a convertirse en una seña de identidad debido a la circunstancia (fortuita) de residir por un tiempo en Tarraco, y por tanto, gobernar su Imperio desde tierras catalanas. En el camino, Augusto atraviesa por momentos tanto de completo silencio historiográfico como de absoluto desprecio hasta alcanzar aquella consideración atemporal y acrítica tan propia de lo clásico. La cuestión a dilucidar es si este tratamiento del personaje se realiza en paralelo a la historiografía oficial española o en contraposición a ella.Palabras clave: Augusto, historiografía catalana.Abstract: This paper studies the figure of Augustus in Catalan historiography, from the monastic chronicles of the 12th century to the 20th century nationalistic claims. The survey of this long period allows us to see how Augustus goes from being part of a system of dating, relating to the birth of Christ, to becoming a symbol of identity, due to the (fortuitous) circumstance of having stayed briefly in Tarraco, ruling his empire from Catalonia. During this process, Augustus experienced both moments of absolute historiographical silence and of complete disdain. However, he finally reached a timeless and uncritical consideration typical of the classics. The key element is to establish whether this treatment of his character is performed in parallel to the official Spanish historiography or opposed to it.Key words: Augustus, Catalan historiography

Nota sobre Antigüedad, nacionalismo(s) e historiografía: dos estudios de caso en las historiografías vasca y catalana

El artículo presenta una investigación en curso sobre el papel de Grecia y Roma antiguas en determinadas historiografías nacionales en los siglos XVIII y XIX, combinando un acercamiento propiamente historiográfico con el estudio de Grecia y Roma como modelos políticos y culturales. El análisis sucinto de dos casos, el fallido proyecto de una Historia nacional por los ilustrados vascos y el tratamiento de la Historia Antigua en la historiografía catalana en el siglo XIX ilustran los problemas y dificultades de esta investigación.Como resultado, es posible seguir la evolución del patriotismo, el surgimiento del nacionalismo y el desarrollo de historiografías alternativas en Espana y otros países y cómo la Antigüedad es utilizada para apoyar determinadas posiciones políticas y culturales

Exciton Footprint of Self-assembled AlGaAs Quantum Dots in Core-Shell Nanowires

Quantum-dot-in-nanowire systems constitute building blocks for advanced photonics and sensing applications. The electronic symmetry of the emitters impacts their function capabilities. Here, we study the fine structure of gallium-rich quantum dots nested in the shell of GaAs-AlGaAs core-shell nanowires. We used optical spectroscopy to resolve the splitting resulting from the exchange terms and extract the main parameters of the emitters. Our results indicate that the quantum dots can host neutral as well as charges excitonic complexes and that the excitons exhibit a slightly elongated footprint, with the main axis tilted with respect to the growth axis. GaAs-AlGaAs emitters in a nanowire are particularly promising for overcoming the limitations set by strain in other systems, with the benefit of being integrated in a versatile photonic structure
