The study of the agricultural changes that took place since the Islamic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 711 AD has mainly focused on the spreading of agricultural irrigation. Yet it is quite surprising to encounter few works dedicated to other agricultural practices that were equally relevant within the productive context of any preindustrial economy, such as animal husbandry. Research on the main practices of husbandry and its management have received little attention due in part to virtually unfounded a priori assumptions, such as the existence of dissociation and competition between this farming subsector and irrigation agriculture. The following study aims to reexamine evidence on the role of domestic animal farming and management in the Andalusi agricultural economy. First, a critical analysis is presented of the causes of the sparse attention paid to the study of the animal economy in al-Ándalus. Second, the paramount importance of animal husbandry within pre-mechanized farming contexts is shown along with the crucial role of a by-product such as animal manure for the maintenance of fertility in irrigated agricultural land. Lastly, we offer an agroecological interpretation of results obtained from the analysis of assemblages of animal remains from Andalusi archaeological sites, aiming to offer a glimpse into the agricultural system of al-Ándalus and the role played by animal husbandry within it

A price mechanism in economies with asymmetric information

    Get PDF
In this paper we consider a pure exchange economy with a finite set of types of agents which have incomplete and asymmetric information on the states of nature. Our aim is to describe the equilibrium price formation and how the lack of information may affect the allocation of resources. For it, we adapt to an asymmetric information scenario a variant of the Shapley-Shubik game introduced by Dubey and Geanakoplos (2003).C72/ D51

After most researchers have agreed to interpret the bone anvils as artefacts used by blacksmiths to cut teeth on metal sickles, present lines of enquiry are focused on drawing the geographic and chronological scope of these tools. Following this path, this paper presents the results of archaeological and ethnographic surveys carried out in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). The new data recorded not only has enabled us to document the presence and temporal scope of the bone anvils on the island, but also, for the first time, the involvement of women in their use.

The Impact of Organizational Factors on E-Business Adoption: An Empirical Analysis

    Get PDF
Purpose: Provide empirical validation of the model developed by García-Moreno, García-Moreno, Nájera-Sánchez and Pablos-Heredero (2016) on the factors influencing the adoption of e-business in firms. Design/methodology/approach: Consideration is given to the method for measuring each one of the variables included in the model. Use has been made of the e-Business Watch database, which contains measures for the theoretical model’s three categories: firm, technology, and environment. Multinomial logistic regression models have been provided. Findings: The variables included have revealed significant statistical relationships for the model in question, although the intensity of the relationships differs. The variables related to the environment also reveal statistically significant relationships, whereby the attitude of trading partners appears to have a relevant and growing impact on e-business adoption. Research limitations/implications: Data come from just one database: the e-Business Watch database/enriched data from alternative databases could be included. Practical implications: The infrastructure of information and communications technologies (ICTs) is confirmed to be a determining factor in e-business development. Nevertheless, the effect of competitor rivalry has a more erratic influence that is encapsulated in a significant relationship in intermediate models, with a sharper increase in the likelihood of being in the category of customer-focused firms, and less internally focused. Social implications: The human capital linked to ICTs is a driving force behind the adoption of these practices. Albeit with a more moderate effect, note should also be taken of the capacity for entering into relationships with third parties within the scope of ICTs, with significant effects that become more robust as they are tested in models that seek to explain the probability of recording higher levels of e-business adoption. Originality/value: The article presents a first empirical analysis to apply the previous developed model published in this journal in 2016.Peer Reviewe

The fictional and transmedia representation of the urban space in the historical thriller: La Peste

    Get PDF
La Peste series (Movistar Plus+) represented a pre-pandemic benchmark in transmedia and hybrid (online and offline) fictional storytelling. This research delves into the keys for the construction of suspense through the development of interactive actions that place the public in a leading position in the story through the dialogue between geographical, fictional and expanded space. Therefore, we will examine the resignification of the city through the image built up by the participation of the viewer –in the series– and the user –in the transmedia actions–. We address both the study of the fictional and augmented space, taking into account the territory occupied by the different strata that made up the city in the sixteenth century, and the processes of expansion of the contents through interactive cartographies, movie maps, and Alternative Reality Games (ARG). As a result, we observe an expansion of the series through the metaphor of the map in an expedition that flits between past and present; fiction and reality; geographical space and cyberspace; the traditional medium –television series– and multiplatform formats, which produces at the same time a novel approach to the urban space of Seville from an experiential perspective
