SFDL: MVC Applied to Workflow Design

    Get PDF
Process management based on workflow systems is a growing trend in collaborative environments. One of the most notorious areas of improvement is that of user interfaces, especially since business process definition languages do not address efficiently the point of contact between workflow engines and human interactions. With that in focus, we propose the MVC pattern design to workflow systems. To accomplish this, we have designed a new dynamic view definition language called SFDL, oriented towards the easy interoperability with the different workflow definition languages, while maintaining enough flexibility to be represented in different formats and being adaptable to several environments. To validate our approach, we have carried out an implementation in a real banking scenario, which has provided continuous feedback and enabled us to refine the proposal. The work is fully based on widely accepted and used web standards (XML, YAML, JSON, Atom and REST). Some guidelines are given to facilitate the adoption of our solution

The aim of this work was to study effects of ketotifen fumarate (KF) on prevention of tissue damage in testes of rats with experimental autoimmune orchitis (EAO) and on the contralateral testis in a model of prolonged testicular cord torsion (TCT). Rats with EAO or TCT were injected intraperitoneally once daily with KF or saline solution (vehicle group). Incidence and severity of testicular damage were evaluated by histopathology using an EAO score or a Johnsen score. Mast cells (MC) were identified by histochemistry and quantified. In EAO model, KF significantly reduced severity of histopathological testicular damage compared to rats in the vehicle group. KF also reduced the number of testicular MC compared to vehicle group. Similarly, in TCT model, multifocal damage of the contralateral testis was observed 30 days after testicular torsion characterized by sloughing of the germinal epithelium, seminiferous tubule atrophy, and interstitial edema. Focal signs of inflammation and fibrosis of seminiferous tubular walls were also observed. In contrast, sections of contralateral testis of rats injected with KF and killed 30 days after surgery showed normal histological features. A significant decrease in the number of MC was observed in rats treated with KF compared to untreated animals. In conclusion, we demonstrated that treatment with KF reduced testicular inflammatory process and MC infiltrates in both EAO and TCT models. The results suggest a promising treatment for infertile male patients with testicular pathologies associated with inflammation and germ cell loss.Fil: Moreno, Diego Javier. Maximal functions and the control of weighted inequalities for the fractional integral operator

    Get PDF
We study weak-type (1, 1) weighted inequalities for the fractional integral operator Iα. We show that the fractional maximal operator Mα controls these inequalities when the weight is radially decreasing. However, we exhibit some counterexamples which show that Mα is not appropriate for this control on general weights. We do provide, nevertheless, some positive results related to this problem by considering other suitable maximal functions

The buttocks have been a symbol of attraction, sexuality and eroticism since ancient times and therefore, they have an important role in defining the posterior body contour. More and more people are talking about and understand the meaning and the role that buttocks play in modeling and physical beauty. The three dimensional gluteoplasty (3-DGP) is an innovative technique that allows us to change volume, shape and firmness, not only in the buttocks but also in the adjacent regions such as the thighs and trochanters, becoming an ideal tool to answer the frequent reasons of consultation of our patients about this particular area of the body: ..

Host-Specific Enzyme-Substrate Interactions in SPM-1 Metallo-beta-Lactamase are Modulated by Second Sphere Residues

    Get PDF
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most virulent and resistant non-fermenting Gram-negative pathogens in the clinic. Unfortunately, P. aeruginosa has acquired genes encoding metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs), enzymes able to hydrolyze most beta-lactam antibiotics. SPM-1 is an MBL produced only by P. aeruginosa, while other MBLs are found in different bacteria. Despite similar active sites, the resistance profile of MBLs towards beta-lactams changes from one enzyme to the other. SPM-1 is unique among pathogen-associated MBLs in that in that it contains "atypical" second sphere residues (S84, G121). Codon randomization on these positions and further selection of resistance-conferring mutants was performed. MICs, periplasmic enzymatic activity, Zn(II) requirements, and protein stability was assessed. Our results indicated that identity of second sphere residues modulates the substrate preferences and the resistance profile of SPM-1 expressed in P. aeruginosa. The second sphere residues found in wild type SPM-1 give rise to a substrate selectivity that is observed only in the periplasmic environment. These residues also allow SPM-1 to confer resistance in P. aeruginosa under Zn(II)-limiting conditions, such as those expected under infection. By optimizing the catalytic efficiency towards beta-lactam antibiotics, the enzyme stability and the Zn(II) binding features, molecular evolution meets the specific needs of a pathogenic bacterial host by means of substitutions outside the active site.Fil: Gonzalez, Lisandro Javier. Full text link

Public lighting represents a large part of the energy consumption of towns and cities. Efficient management of public lighting can entail significant energy savings. This work presents a smart system for managing public lighting networks based on wireless communication and the DALI protocol. Wireless communication entails significant economic savings, as there is no need to install new wiring and visual impacts and damage to the facades of historical buildings in city centers are avoided. The DALI protocol uses bidirectional communication with the ballast, which allows its status to be controlled and monitored at all times. The novelty of this work is that it tackles all aspects related to the management of public lighting: a standard protocol, DALI, was selected to control the ballast, a wireless node based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard with a DALI interface was designed, a network layer that considers the topology of the lighting network has been developed, and lastly, some user-friendly applications for the control and maintenance of the system by the technical crews of the different towns and cities have been developed

Causes of mortality among adults with Down syndrome before and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain

Background: The life expectancy of people with Down syndrome (DS) is limited by Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related deaths, mainly due to respiratory infections. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic could have changed known, past trends in mortality in this population. We analysed the differences in causes of mortality between individuals with DS deceased before and after the onset of the pandemic. Method: This is a cross-sectional study of adults with DS recruited at a tertiary, university outpatient clinic in Madrid, Spain. Demographic and clinical data were retrospectively collected from their medical records, including information on their deaths, if any. Results: Five hundred seventy-two adults were included in the study, and 67 (11.7%) died. The main cause of death was respiratory infections, which occurred in 36 participants [9 (45.0%) before, and 27 (58.7%) after the appearance of COVID-19]. No significant differences were found in the determinants of pre-pandemic and post-pandemic death after adjusting for age and AD, except for an association between the use of psychotropic medication and death in the post-pandemic period (odds ratio: 2.24; 95% confidence interval: 1.04–4.82). Vaccination against COVID-19 showed a marked protective effect against mortality (odds ratio: 0.0002; 95% confidence interval: 6.7e10−6 to 0.004). Conclusions: The appearance of COVID-19 has not impacted the overall trend of increase in mean age of death of adults with DS in our milieu, probably thanks to the very important protective effect of vaccination, which supports prioritising people with DS in future immunisation campaigns. The association between psychotropic medication use and mortality requires further explorationThis work was supported by a grant to Beatriz Sánchez (grant no. 2021b-2088) and Diego Real de Asúa (grant no. 2021a-2069) from the Fondation Jérôme Lejeun
