The Failure of the Aetolian Deditio as a Didactic Cultural Clash in the Histories of Polybius (20.9-10)

This paper examines the Aetolian deditio in fidem of 191 as described by Polybius 20.9-10. Erich Gruen influentially interpreted Polybius’ description as inconsistent and exaggerated, on the grounds that Greeks and Romans from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC had a common understanding of πίστις and fides and that Polybius’ own evidence on deditio was inconsistent. This paper reasserts the older view: that Greeks generally then had a hazy knowledge of Roman culture, including the practice of deditio, and that—even if weight be granted to factors such as the Roman commander’s personal character and ambitions or the historian’s supposed dislike of the Aetolians or his deployment of a degree of dramatic licence or a possible ‘hardening’ in the Romans’ general practice—this passage properly emphasises a genuine cultural clash, thereby promoting Polybius’ fundamental paideia-objective of teaching Greek readers, above all Greek politicians, how to respond competently to the realities of Roman power.Fil: Moreno Leoni, Álvaro Matías. Large-scale analysis of Zipf's law in English texts

    Get PDF
Despite being a paradigm of quantitative linguistics, Zipf's law for words suffers from three main problems: its formulation is ambiguous, its validity has not been tested rigorously from a statistical point of view, and it has not been confronted to a representatively large number of texts. So, we can summarize the current support of Zipf's law in texts as anecdotic. We try to solve these issues by studying three different versions of Zipf's law and fitting them to all available English texts in the Project Gutenberg database (consisting of more than 30000 texts). To do so we use state-of-the art tools in fitting and goodness-of-fit tests, carefully tailored to the peculiarities of text statistics. Remarkably, one of the three versions of Zipf's law, consisting of a pure power-law form in the complementary cumulative distribution function of word frequencies, is able to fit more than 40% of the texts in the database (at the 0.05 significance level), for the whole domain of frequencies (from 1 to the maximum value) and with only one free parameter (the exponent)

    Transcription, intuition, mediation

The article explores the relationship between transcription and intuition in the architect’s work. Oiza’s interpretation on Le Corbusier’s definition of architecture shows mediation as obvious form of relationship between the proposed terms. This mediation becomes the primary mission of the architect. Consideration of two early examples of homes developed by Le Corbusier shows this approach as a plea in defense of the role of the architect. The current interest of this approach allows to analyze contemporary works, such as Maison à Bordeaux by Rem Koolhaas. The different consideration given by architect and engineer regarding a detail of the housing, and shown on faxes from work, allows for reflection in this way.Peer Reviewe

Artistic patronage in the Modern Age: The Vélez marquisate and the church of San Antonio de Padua in Mazarrón (Murcia)

También se han aportado nuevos datos mediante el análisis de documentación inéditaThe church of Saint Anthony of Padua (Mazarrón, Murcia), dated from the end of the 15th century to the middle of the 16th century, was built due to the influence and power that the Velez marquisate had on Mazarrón by the exploitation of alum ore. The temple underwent several reforms and extensions over time, modifying its simple original structure to give it the characteristics that define the building today. In this paper we aim to study the patronage of such marquisate on the temple, especially from the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 18th century. We have proved that this patronage was not completely true, and the building work was not totally sponsored. In addition to other aspects, this paper also studies the chronology and the artistic and historic development of the church, which has not been properly studied and whose books of factory have not been preserved. We have also added unpublished information verified with already known source

The natural evolution of web 2.0, populated by prosumers (persons who consumes and produces media, e.g. blogs), has generated a new economic, social and cultura l scene. In this context, the formation and continuous evolution of a specific blogosphere (hyperlinked blog community) from students of the graphic subjects in the Architecture Schools is a fact. Its potential, yet to be developed, is extraordinary , as vehicle for dissemination, as working tool and as meeting place for graphical references . This work is focused on the Group Blogs emerged in the propaedeutic courses (the subject of Drawing, Analysis and Ideation - D.A.I.) in the ETSAM. Its structure , content, editors, interaction, internal functioning, evolution and integration with physical class are here analyzed. The navigation data (the real use by students and external visitors) are contrasted with its theoretical goals to evaluate those blogs . The findings should serve to develop those blogs (or to make others) as a better tool and as a productive community of shared knowledge
