A near-field scanned microwave probe for spatially localized electrical metrology
We have developed a near-field scanned microwave probe with a sampling volume
of approximately 10 micron in diameter, which is the smallest one achieved in
near-field microwave microscopy. This volume is defined to confine close to 100
percent of the probe net sampling reactive energy, thus making the response
virtually independent on the sample properties outside of this region. The
probe is formed by a 4 GHz balanced stripline resonator with a few-micron tip
size. It provides non-contact, non-invasive measurement and is uniquely suited
for spatially localized electrical metrology applications, e.g. on
semiconductor production wafers.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Appl. Phys. Let
The norm-1-property of a quantum observable
A normalized positive operator measure has the
norm-1-property if \no{E(X)}=1 whenever . This property reflects
the fact that the measurement outcome probabilities for the values of such
observables can be made arbitrary close to one with suitable state
preparations. Some general implications of the norm-1-property are
investigated. As case studies, localization observables, phase observables, and
phase space observables are considered.Comment: 14 page
Localization and Capacitance Fluctuations in Disordered Au Nano-junctions
Nano-junctions, containing atomic-scale gold contacts between strongly
disordered leads, exhibit different transport properties at room temperature
and at low temperature. At room temperature, the nano-junctions exhibit
conductance quantization effects. At low temperatures, the contacts exhibit
Coulomb-Blockade. We show that the differences between the room-temperature and
low temperature properties arise from the localization of electronic states in
the leads. The charging energy and capacitance of the nano-junctions exhibit
strong fluctuations with applied magnetic field at low temperature, as
predicted theoretically.Comment: 20 pages 8 figure
Are we on the same page? Knowledge boundaries and transactive memory system development in cross-functional teams
One of the key challenges that organizations face when trying to integrate knowledge across different functions is the need to overcome knowledge boundaries between team members. In cross-functional teams, these boundaries, associated with different knowledge backgrounds of people from various disciplines, create communication problems, necessitating team members to engage in complex cognitive processes when integrating knowledge toward a joint outcome. This research investigates the impact of syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic knowledge boundaries on a teamâs ability to develop a transactive memory system (TMS)âa collective memory system for knowledge coordination in groups. Results from our survey show that syntactic and pragmatic knowledge boundaries negatively affect TMS development. These findings extend TMS theory beyond the information-processing view, which treats knowledge as an object that can be stored and retrieved, to the interpretive and practice-based views of knowledge, which recognize that knowledge (in particular specialized knowledge) is localized, situated, and embedded in practice
Superconducting Quantum Point Contacts
We review our experiments on the electronic transport properties of atomic
contacts between metallic electrodes, in particular superconducting ones.
Despite ignorance of the exact atomic configuration, these ultimate quantum
point contacts can be manipulated and well characterized in-situ. They allow
performing fundamental tests of the scattering theory of quantum transport. In
particular, we discuss the case of the Josephson effect
Longitudinal-Transverse Separations of Structure Functions at Low for Hydrogen and Deuterium
We report on a study of the longitudinal to transverse cross section ratio,
, at low values of and , as determined from
inclusive inelastic electron-hydrogen and electron-deuterium scattering data
from Jefferson Lab Hall C spanning the four-momentum transfer range 0.06 GeV. Even at the lowest values of , remains
nearly constant and does not disappear with decreasing , as expected. We
find a nearly identical behaviour for hydrogen and deuterium.Comment: 4 pages, 2 gigure
'A habitual disposition to the good': on reason, virtue and realism
Amidst the crisis of instrumental reason, a number of contemporary political philosophers including JĂŒrgen Habermas have sought to rescue the project of a reasonable humanism from the twin threats of religious fundamentalism and secular naturalism. In his recent work, Habermas defends a post-metaphysical politics that aims to protect rationality against encroachment while also accommodating religious faith within the public sphere. This paper contends that Habermasâ post-metaphysical project fails to provide a robust alternative either to the double challenge of secular naturalism and religious fundamentalism or to the ruthless instrumentalism that underpins capitalism. By contrast with Habermas and also with the ânew realismâ of contemporary political philosophers such as Raymond Geuss or Bernard Williams, realism in the tradition of Plato and Aristotle can defend reason against instrumental rationality and blind belief by integrating it with habit, feeling and even faith. Such metaphysicalâpolitical realism can help develop a politics of virtue that goes beyond communitarian thinking by emphasising plural modes of association (not merely âcommunityâ), substantive ties of sympathy and the importance of pursuing goodness and mutual flourishing
Comparison of the Disease Activity Score Using Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate and C-reactive Protein in African Americans with Rheumatoid Arthritis
The Disease Activity Score based on 28 joints (DAS28) has been increasingly used in clinical practice and research studies of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Studies have reported discordance between DAS28 based on erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) versus C-reactive protein (CRP) in RA patients. However such comparison is lacking in African-Americans with RA
