Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are open courses made available online at no cost to the user and designed
to scale up, allowing for a large number of participants. As such, they are a disruptive new development which has
the potential to widen access to higher education since they contribute to social inclusion, the dissemination of
knowledge and pedagogical innovation. However, assuring quality learning opportunities to all cannot be simply
reduced to allowing free access to higher education. On the contrary, it implies assuring equitable opportunities for
every participant to succeed in their learning experience. This goal depends on the quality of the learning design. To
be successful, a massive open online learning experience has to empower learners and to facilitate a networked
learning environment. In fact, MOOCs are designed to serve a high heterogeneity of profiles, with many differences
regarding learning needs and preferences, prior knowledge, contexts of participation and diversity of online platforms.
Personalization can play a key role in this process. In this article, the authors describe the iMOOC pedagogical model
and its later derivative, the sMOOC model, and explain how they contributed to the introduction of the principles
of diversity and learner equity to MOOC design, allowing for a clear differentiation of learning paths and also of
virtual environments, while empowering participants to succeed in their learning experiences. Using a design-based
research approach, a comparative analysis of two course iterations each representing each model is also presented
and discussed.
Type I interferons in tuberculosis: Foe and occasionally friend
Tuberculosis remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and, despite its clinical significance, there are still significant gaps in our understanding of pathogenic and protective mechanisms triggered by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Type I interferons (IFN) regulate a broad family of genes that either stimulate or inhibit immune function, having both host-protective and detrimental effects, and exhibit well-characterized antiviral activity. Transcriptional studies have uncovered a potential deleterious role for type I IFN in active tuberculosis. Since then, additional studies in human tuberculosis and experimental mouse models of M. tuberculosis infection support the concept that type I IFN promotes both bacterial expansion and disease pathogenesis. More recently, studies in a different setting have suggested a putative protective role for type I IFN. In this study, we discuss the mechanistic and contextual factors that determine the detrimental versus beneficial outcomes of type I IFN induction during M. tuberculosis infection, from human disease to experimental mouse models of tuberculosis

Despite being a widespread reality, the theme of female and foreign criminality has received little
attention from the scientific community.
The existing theoretical frameworks suggest that the Portuguese justice system applies a hegemonic
"lens" that seems to result in prejudice towards the minority groups. Therefore, circumstance of being a "Foreign
Woman", which combines the factors of race and gender, seems to represent an increased risk status of even
more punishment when inserted in the penitentiary system. On one hand, they belong to a class of offenders that
breaks the social values of a patriarchal society and, on the other hand, they are persona non grata in a
nationalistic society that shows little motivation towards their integration.
Based on these assumptions, the present study aims to understand how the Portuguese legal and
criminal system appears reflected in the non-resident foreign women discourses as a result of the actions taken
by the criminal control systems.
The data was through semi-structured interviews to 43 women of foreign nationalities incarcerated in
Portugal, in order to try to understand how they view their life stories in terms of past, present and future. In the
specific context of this thesis, we analyzed the reports of nine foreign inmates, non-residents, by using qualitative
methodologies - Grounded Theory - in all dimensions that refer to their contact with the Portuguese legal system
and jail.
The analysis of these women’s narratives provides two dimensions in the categorization of the penal
system: structure and judicial application as well as resources offered and interaction/interrelation with internal
and external elements (e.g. family) of the criminal control system. From the obtained results, we can point out
the negative image associated with the Portuguese judicial system, not only because of its susceptibility to racist
prejudices but also due to the lengthy evaluations of the probation periods, which are different in the various
establishments. Although some negative aspects (e.g. medical negligence and conflicted relationships) cloud
their experience, these women rate the prison environment positively, pointing out the opportunities offered and
the good conduct of the staff especially in regards to surveillance
Fast screening for diagnostic of heart ischemic episodes
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Doutor em Química SustentávelCardiovascular diseases (CVD) are top-killer chronic diseases, accounting for al-most half of the European deaths in 2010 (Eurostat data). Most recent statistics in Portuguese territory confirm this scenario, with cardiovascular diseases killing about 11 persons per 100000 inhabitants. Reducing these numbers is urgent and requires early, quick and efficient diagnostic of the specific heart condition.
Thus, the main goal of this proposal is to develop a low cost sensing-devices based on newly synthesized sensory biomaterials for screening cardiac bi-omarkers in point-of-care. These were applied to screen the conventional bi-omarkers of clinical interest, all peptides in nature. These include troponin T (TnT), creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB) and myoglobin (Myo). This was achieved by means of novel and low cost biosensing materials that were designed to display good selectivity to each biomarker, assembled on nanostructured sens-ing units and tested on serum samples. The design of novel biosensing materials consisted on synthesizing plastic antibodies by means of novel molecular im-printing (MI) and enzymatic approaches. Nanostructured sensing units were as-sembled by modifying the surface of standard conductive materials with the pre-viously indicated biomaterials. Standard conductive supports selected for this purpose were carbon and gold.
Overall, it is expected that the emerging biosensing materials and platforms out coming from this project may contribute for the development of new non-inva-sive or minimally invasive methods with clinical application in the early screen-ing of chronic diseases and fast-screening in point-of-care (POC) of acute events
