A comunicação entre o casal no contexto do cancro da mama

    Get PDF

A methodological approach to evaluate elderly-robot interactions

    Get PDF
The relevance in the study of interaction between elderly and robots may depend on the choice of activities that robots can be developed to perform and the assessment of their impact and importance for older people. This research requires coordinated research between computer engineers and specialists in the humanities and social sciences. Being a recent research area, it is particularly relevant to carefully select the behavioural variables to be analyzed, the methodology adopted and the instruments that allow for a rigorous evaluation. Based on these assumptions, the present study aims to develop Innovative Initiatives for the Promotion of Active Aging in the EUROACE Region. The authors propose an appropriate methodology and instruments to evaluate the impact of the human-robot interaction in the promotion of a more active aging in a group of elderly in a nursing home. The analyzed variables focus on the involvement of the elderly in the activities, their capacity for initiative and to establish social interactions, indicators of well-being and a proactive attitude. The methodology of the study is mixed (qualitative and quantitative), organized as an exploratory case study. Data collection is based on naturalistic observation but variables are quantitatively assessed in a pre/post-test design. The research design identified the narratives of the elderly and the staff of the institution regarding the needs and interests of each elderly person, classified the participants according to the levels of prevailing social interactions, involvement and initiative in activities, considered important variables for an active ageing and, in this sense, demonstrated its adequacy to be used to evaluate the results of the intervention using social assistive robots.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Designing a tangible interface for collaborative storytelling to access 'embodiment' and meaning making

    Get PDF
This work presents an ongoing study of the design and development of a physical interface that addresses storytelling. The current prototype is the result of several design iterations with four to five years old preschoolers and six preschool teachers. The interaction model was motivated by findings from research on tangible user interfaces as well as embodied cognition. Although research in these areas has revealed potential benefits of the use of physical interfaces, until now no extended in depth study of a prolonged use in the classroom of such interfaces has been carried. This work proposes to carry such an investigation, observing a group of preschoolers interacting with the interface for a period of six months.(undefined

Extremal dichotomy for uniformly hyperbolic systems

We consider the extreme value theory of a hyperbolic toral automorphism T:T2T2T: \mathbb{T}^2 \to \mathbb{T}^2 showing that if a H\"older observation ϕ\phi which is a function of a Euclidean-type distance to a non-periodic point ζ\zeta is strictly maximized at ζ\zeta then the corresponding time series {ϕTi}\{\phi\circ T^i\} exhibits extreme value statistics corresponding to an iid sequence of random variables with the same distribution function as ϕ\phi and with extremal index one. If however ϕ\phi is strictly maximized at a periodic point qq then the corresponding time-series exhibits extreme value statistics corresponding to an iid sequence of random variables with the same distribution function as ϕ\phi but with extremal index not equal to one. We give a formula for the extremal index (which depends upon the metric used and the period of qq). These results imply that return times are Poisson to small balls centered at non-periodic points and compound Poisson for small balls centered at periodic points.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure

Currículo Europeu para o Ensino Inclusivo da Linguagem Académica (EILA)

Este documento é a versão traduzida do currículo elaborado durante o período de realização do projeto EUCIM-TE. O documento original (em língua inglesa) pode ser consultado em www.eucim-te.eu.Educational systems of most European countries seem to be unable to respond adequately to the growing migration-induced multilingualism. At the moment, none of the European member states has developed an integrated approach to address linguistic diversity in teacher pre- and in-service training programmes. With it, there is a need to move from “compartmentalised” language support approaches to “mainstreamed” approaches where second language instruction is integrated across school years and subjects in the regular school curriculum. The European Union COMENIUS Project EUCIM-TE has proposed such a curriculum, as well as national adaptations for eight European contexts. The present document is the Portuguese version of this curriculum proposal, the so called IALT (Inclusive Academic Language Teaching) core curriculum, which aims improving pre- and in-service teacher training for work with pupils with an ethnic and linguistic minority background.Projecto financiado com o apoio da Comissão Europeia (Comenius Life Long Learning Programme - 141836-LLP-1-DE-COMENIUS-CMP)

This study aimed to determine whether marital intimacy mediates the association between posttraumatic growth (PTG) and anxious symptoms in women who had recently completed breast cancer treatments and breast cancer survivors

Teacher education curriculum for teaching immigrant students in Portuguese schools

Educational systems of most European countries seem to be unable to respond adequately to the growing migration-induced multilingualism. None of the European member states has developed an integrated approach to address linguistic diversity in teacher education programmes that will respond to the demands of inclusion, equity, and social justice for all learners. This paper presents a European proposal for a second language teacher education curriculum and the process of its adaptation for the Portuguese context. This curriculum intends to prepare content teachers to work with immigrant pupils in mainstream classrooms with a focus on academic language. After the contextualization of the issue of social and linguistic needs of these immigrant students, the authors present a brief overview of the European project curriculum for Inclusive Academic Language Teaching, followed by a discussion of the Portuguese proposal and its implementation caveats. The authors propose a module on Portuguese as a Non-Native Language (PNN L), which covers the issues of second language acquisition in the schooling project, didactical issues of teaching and learning (inclusive) academic language, inclusive academic language and school organization issues. A national proposal for Portugal also embraces the concept of the teacher as a critical reflective practitioner and of school as a learning community. The authors conclude that this European proposal responds to pressing necessities in Portugal for the education of these students and constitutes a viable response to their language needs, in spite of the many constraints in its application
