    Supervision in coaching: Systematic literature review

    Coaching supervision as a field of knowledge is at an early stage of development, even in comparison to the discipline of coaching. To support and stimulate further progress of the field, this fully inclusive literature review aims to create a comprehensive map of the themes and directions in contemporary publications on coaching supervision. Through the synthesis of findings in 68 selected sources we identified four main themes: clarifying the concept of coaching supervision; the state of theoretical development demonstrated in the literature; the value attributed to supervision; and the nature of the current use of the supervision in the field. Based on our analysis we generate potential directions for further research, conceptualisation and theory building

    The Mediterranean Sea as a barrier to gene flow: evidence from variation in and around the F7 and F12 genomic regions

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Mediterranean has a long history of interactions among different peoples. In this study, we investigate the genetic relationships among thirteen population samples from the broader Mediterranean region together with three other groups from the Ivory Coast and Bolivia with a particular focus on the genetic structure between North Africa and South Europe. Analyses were carried out on a diverse set of neutral and functional polymorphisms located in and around the coagulation factor VII and XII genomic regions (F7 and F12).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Principal component analysis revealed a significant clustering of the Mediterranean samples into North African and South European groups consistent with the results from the hierarchical AMOVA, which showed a low but significant differentiation between groups from the two shores. For the same range of geographic distances, populations from each side of the Mediterranean were found to differ genetically more than populations within the same side. To further investigate this differentiation, we carried out haplotype analyses, which provided partial evidence that sub-Saharan gene flow was higher towards North Africa than South Europe.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>As there is no consensus between the two genomic regions regarding gene flow through the Sahara, it is hard to reach a solid conclusion about its role in the differentiation between the two Mediterranean shores and more data are necessary to reach a definite conclusion. However our data suggest that the Mediterranean Sea was at least partially a barrier to gene flow between the two shores.</p

    Molecular Variation in Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Gene (eNOS) in Western Mediterranean Populations

    Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS or NOS3) is the main responsible for nitric oxide (NO) production in vascular system and different polymorphisms have been identified in epidemiological studies. Trying to test the eNOS genetic variation in general populations we studied the 27-bp VNTR in intron 4 and G894T substitution in exon 7 markers in 6 Western Mediterranean populations (3 from Iberian Peninsula, 1 from North Africa, and 2 from Sardinia) and a sample from Ivory Coast. The VNTR frequencies in Western Mediterranean and Ivory Coast fit well into the ranges previously described for Europeans and Sub-Saharans respectively, and a typical African allele has been detected in polymorphic frequencies in the Berber sample. The G894T substitution presents the highest frequencies described for the T allele in the North Mediterranean populations. Linkage disequilibrium is present between both markers in all populations except in the Ivory Coast sample. The variation found for these polymorphisms indicates that they may be a useful tool for population studies even at microgeographical level

    Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-size exclusion chromatography (UPLC-SEC) as an efficient tool for the rapid and highly informative characterisation of biopolymers

    Starch has a complex molecular structure, with properties dependent on the relative chain lengths and branching structure of its constituent molecules, which varies due to variation in starch biosynthetic genes. Here we present the application of ultra-high performance size exclusion chromatography to the separation of starch chains from plant seeds. Several methods, have been used to analyse chain length distributions in starch, all with limitations in terms of analysis time, sample preparation and molecular weight range. Here we demonstrate that chain length distributions can be obtained with dramatically reduced analysis time using ultra-high performance size exclusion chromatography. The method may also show improvements in resolution of some fine structural features. Understanding links between starch fine structure and biosynthetic genes will allow bioengineering of starches with tailored properties. This technique may have application to the size separation and resolution of a range of biopolymers of value to the food, drink and pharmaceutical industries

    Rapidly mutating Y-STRs in rapidly expanding populations: Discrimination power of the Yfiler Plus multiplex in northern Africa

    The male-specific northern African genetic pool is characterised by a high frequency of the E-M81 haplogroup, which expanded in very recent times (2-3 kiloyears ago). As a consequence of their recent coalescence, E-M81 chromosomes often cannot be completely distinguished on the basis of their Y-STR profiles, unless rapidly-mutating Y-STRs (RM Y-STRs) are analysed. In this study, we used the Yfiler® Plus kit, which includes 7 RM Y-STRs and 20 standard Y-STR, to analyse 477 unrelated males coming from 11 northern African populations sampled from Morocco, Algeria, Libya and Egypt. The Y chromosomes were assigned to monophyletic lineages after the analysis of 72 stable biallelic polymorphisms and, as expected, we found a high proportion of E-M81 subjects (about 46%), with frequencies decreasing from west to east. We found low intra-population diversity indexes, in particular in the populations that experienced long-term isolation. The AMOVA analysis showed significant differences between the countries and between most of the 11 populations, with a rough differentiation between northwestern Africa and northeastern Africa, where the Egyptians Berbers from Siwa represented an outlier population. The comparison between the Yfiler® and the Yfiler® Plus network of the E-M81 Y chromosomes confirmed the high power of discrimination of the latter kit, thanks to higher variability of the RM Y-STRs: indeed, the number of chromosomes sharing the same haplotype was drastically reduced from 201 to 81 and limited, in the latter case, to subjects from the same population

    Molecular Variation at Functional Genes and the History of Human Populations – Data on Candidate Genes for Cardiovascular Risk in the Mediterranean

    A screening of 22 DNA polymorphisms has been performed in western Mediterranean populations (Iberian Peninsula, Morocco, and Central Mediterranean Islands). The analyzed markers correspond to polymorphic sites in several candidate genes for cardiovascular disease including apolipopoteins and their receptors (APOA1, APOB, APOE, APOC1, APOC2, LPA, and LDLR), genes implied in the hemostasis regulation (Factor VII, and -fibrinogen, and platelet-integrin, tissue plasminogen activator, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1), and the angiotensin converting enzyme gene. The results are presented of a partial analysis carried out in following population samples: 6 from the Iberian Peninsula, 2 from Morocco, and 3 from Central Islands. The degree of interpopulation diversity was significant and consistent with data from other kind of genetic polymorphisms. The apportionment of the allele frequency variance supported a geographic structure into three main regions: Central Mediterranean Islands, the Iberia Peninsula and North Africa. The genetic distance pattern is compatible with a south-to-north North African influence in the Iberian Peninsula and a remarkable gene flow from sub-Saharan Africa into Morocco. Epidemiologicaly, North Africa is characterized by high frequencies of LPA PNR alleles with high number of repeats (protective for cardiovascular risk) and high frequencies of the APOE*E4 allele (risk factor) as compared with European populations

    Latin Americans show wide-spread Converso ancestry and imprint of local Native ancestry on physical appearance

    Historical records and genetic analyses indicate that Latin Americans trace their ancestry mainly to the intermixing (admixture) of Native Americans, Europeans and Sub-Saharan Africans. Using novel haplotype-based methods, here we infer sub-continental ancestry in over 6,500 Latin Americans and evaluate the impact of regional ancestry variation on physical appearance. We find that Native American ancestry components in Latin Americans correspond geographically to the present-day genetic structure of Native groups, and that sources of non-Native ancestry, and admixture timings, match documented migratory flows. We also detect South/East Mediterranean ancestry across Latin America, probably stemming mostly from the clandestine colonial migration of Christian converts of non-European origin (Conversos). Furthermore, we find that ancestry related to highland (Central Andean) versus lowland (Mapuche) Natives is associated with variation in facial features, particularly nose morphology, and detect significant differences in allele frequencies between these groups at loci previously associated with nose morphology in this sample.Instituto Multidisciplinario de Biología Celula

    The population of barred galaxies in the local universe I. Detection and characterisation of bars

    (Abridge) Bars are very common in the centre of the disc galaxies, and they drive the evolution of their structure. A volume-limited sample of 2106 disc galaxies extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 was studied to derive the bar fraction, length, and strength as a function of the morphology, size, local galaxy density, light concentration, and colour of the host galaxy. The bars were detected using the ellipse fitting method and Fourier analysis method. The ellipse fitting method was found to be more efficient in detecting bars in spiral galaxies. The fraction of barred galaxies turned out to be 45%. A bar was found in 29% of the lenticular galaxies, in 55% and 54% of the early- and late-type spirals, respectively. The bar length (normalised by the galaxy size) of late-type spirals is shorter than in early-type or lenticular ones. A correlation between the bar length and galaxy size was found with longer bars hosted by larger galaxies. The bars of the lenticular galaxies are weaker than those in spirals. Moreover, the unimodal distribution of the bar strength found for all the galaxy types argues against a quick transition between the barred and unbarred statues. There is no difference between the local galaxy density of barred and unbarred galaxies. Besides, neither the length nor strength of the bars are correlated with the local density of the galaxy neighbourhoods. In contrast, a statistical significant difference between the central light concentration and colour of barred and unbarred galaxies was found. Bars are mostly located in less concentrated and bluer galaxies. These results indicate that the properties of bars are strongly related to those of their host galaxies, but do not depend on the local environment.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures.
