The present study aims at exploring the under-investigated interface between SA and L2 phonological development by assessing the impact of a 3-month SA programme on the pronunciation of a group of 23 Catalan/Spanish learners of English (NNSs) by means of phonetic measures and perceived FA measures. 6 native speakers (NS) in an exchange programme in Spain provided baseline data for comparison purposes. The participants were recorded performing a reading aloud task before (pre-test) and immediately after (post-test) the SA. Another group of 37 proficient non-native listeners, also bilingual in Catalan/Spanish and trained in English phonetics, assessed the NNS' speech samples for degree of FA. Phonetic measures consisted of pronunciation accuracy scores computed by counting pronunciation errors (phonemic deletions, insertions and substitutions, and stress misplacement). Measures of perceived FA were obtained with two experiments. In experiment 1, the listeners heard a random presentation of the sentences produced by the NSs and by the NNSs at pre-test and post-test and rated them on a 7-point Likert scale for degree of FA (1 = “native” , 7 = “heavy foreign accent”). In experiment 2, they heard paired pre-test/post-test sentences (i.e. produced by the same NNS at pre-test and posttest) and indicated which of the two sounded more native-like. Then, they stated their judgment confidence level on a 7-point scale (1 = “unsure”, 7 = “sure”). Results indicated a slight, non-significant improvement in perceived FA after SA. However, a significant decrease was found in pronunciation accuracy scores after SA. Measures of pronunciation accuracy and FA ratings were also found to be strongly correlated. These findings are discussed in light of the often reported mixed results as regards pronunciation improvement during short-term immersion

Ethics in social sciences: reflections on research practices in an anthropological study of indigenous knowledge

    Get PDF
This paper initially presents the features of some ethic research codes within Social Sciences and, particularly, those guidelines concerning the scientific analysis of local and indigenous knowledge systems. Secondly, we present a new analytical perspective on the ethical assessment of research projects; this perspective focuses on the analysis of the methodological strategy, and incorporates the notions of risk/damage, confidentiality, free, prior and informed consent, vulnerability, autonomy, and intellectual property. Furthermore, we apply this analytical model to the research procedures deployed in a study about the transmission of local knowledge relative to textile activities within two indigenous communities. This exercise allows us to review some aspects of our analysis that were not considered previously. The discussion of current regulations regarding scientific ethic codes as well as international conventions that apply to the treatment of local indigenous knowledge systems, and the description and deployment of the model to a concrete case, will allow us to identify some of the nodal points of the analysis of the ethical considerations involved in social science research.

    Get PDF

This is the case with referential coherence found in phrases such as: «el dicho día e mes e año susodicho», «la cual dicha donación», «el dicho Alonso Segovia», «la tal revocación», «la escriptura ya sitada», «el referido zercado». The aim of this paper is to analyze a corpus of Notarial documents that will contribute to the description of the phenomenon alongside the development of those structures as a cohesive resource of which the editor of documents will become increasingly conscious. Finally, we compare our results with those obtained from medieval documents as well as current legal documents in order to assess the adherence to tradition of this textual model and set some chronological stages in the development of the phenomenon

Migrant families are key to observe the dynamic relationship between social groups and their territories. We have analyzed different aspects of the migration process of a large group of people in Argentina that currently dwell in a lowland’s peri-urban location (Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area) but whose genealogical origins are placed in Jujuy Province rural highlands (Humahuaca and Tilcara Departments). This paper presents a brief communication about our results and findings of a long-term research on agricultural practices and knowledge deployed in both geographical areas, which are united by a considerable migrant flow intensified during the last three decades. Regularities and changes in family farming type of organization and food knowledge and practices, are key to understand the cultural heritage firmly rooted in these families and the strength and sustainability of the migration process.Fil: Castro, Mora del Pilar. This article presents an analysis of different aspects of the migration process of a large group of people in Argentina, who originally come from the rural uplands (Jujuy Province) but who currently dwell in a lowlands peri-urban area (Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area). In particular, it presents some of the results of a long-term research project on food practices deployed in both geographical zones, which are united by a considerable migrant flow that intensified during the last three decades. From an anthropological perspective, it analyses the features of the nutritional transition of this social group regard to changes in its food knowledge and cultural heritage. It suggests that this qualitative factor can contribute to a better understanding of the health issues that have been faced by this group.Fil: Castro, Mora del Pilar. Pragmatics of notarial document: The mimetic character of the notarial texts

    Get PDF
In this paper we analyse a diachronic corpus of 29 notarial documents from Malaga dating from between 1497 and 1551. All documents, coming from the collections of the Historical Archive of Malaga, share a series of common formal and structural features due to the fact that they belong to the same historical and discourse traditions (Diskurstraditionen). The aim of this research is to analyse the linguistic elements which define this type of text (notarial documents). On the one hand, we pay attention to the typological features. Our objective is to examine the features which correspond to the language, textual and culture awareness of the public notary highly conscious of the need to construct the notarial documents in a ruled and professional way On the other hand, we focus our study on the analysis of the pragmatic features related to two different points of view: the pragmatic features of the speaker and those of the receiver. The examples we analyse show a great complexity associated to the essence of the message.peerReviewe
