    General bounds on limited broadcast domination

    Limited dominating broadcasts were proposed as a variant of dominating broadcasts, where the broadcast function is upper bounded by a constant k . The minimum cost of such a dominating broadcast is the k -broadcast dominating number. We present a uni ed upper bound on this parameter for any value of k in terms of both k and the order of the graph. For the speci c case of the 2-broadcast dominating number, we show that this bound is tight for graphs as large as desired. We also study the family of caterpillars, providing a smaller upper bound, which is attained by a set of such graphs with unbounded order.Preprin

    The Effects of Rhodiola Crenulata Extract on Proliferation and Differentiation in Glioblastoma Multiforme

    Purpose: Purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of rhodiola crenulata plant extract on glioblastoma in vitro. Methods: U-87MG glioblastoma multiforme cell line was utilized for evaluation in this study. Cells were treated with 100ug/ml or 200ug/ml of rhodiola crenulata and compared to ethanol vehicle control. Proliferation was measured at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours after treatment utilizing an MTS proliferation assay. To further assess proliferation a clonogenicity assay was conducted. These cells were treated with ethanol vehicle control, 100ug/ml of rhodiola, radiation, or combined rhodiola/radiation treatment. To evaluate differentiation the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a protein marker of differentiation, was assessed with immunocytochemistry. Results: Effects on proliferation were initially noted at 48hours after treatment and observed through the 96-hour period. The effects on proliferation were noted in both treatment groups. At 96-hours after treatment significant difference was noted between the 100ug/ml of rhodiola and control group (p=0.0065) and significant difference noted between the 200ug/ml of rhodiola and control group (p=0.0006). Cell clonogenicity was reduced in the cells treated with 100ug/ml of rhodiola. The decreased number of colonies was significant when comparing the radiation treated cells with 100ug/ml rhodiola treated cells (p=0.0030). GFAP was overexpressed in the rhodiola treatment group when compared to expression in the control group (Figure 1). Conclusion: Rhodiola crenulata extract effectively decreases proliferation and increases differentiation of glioblastoma cells in vitro. Further work is required to fully understand the extent and full effects rhodiola crenulata has glioblastoma cells

    On geodesic and monophonic convexity

    In this paper we deal with two types of graph convexities, which are the most natural path convexities in a graph and which are defined by a system P of paths in a connected graph G: the geodesic convexity (also called metric convexity) which arises when we consider shortest paths, and the monophonic convexity (also called minimal path convexity) when we consider chordless paths. First, we present a realization theorem proving, that there is no general relationship between monophonic and geodetic hull sets. Second, we study the contour of a graph, showing that the contour must be monophonic. Finally, we consider the so-called edge Steiner sets.     Cartilla de actividades para la enseñanza de la lectoescritura en niños con trastornos de déficit de atención e hiperactividad (TDAH), en segundo año de Educación Básica

    The purpose of this article is to indicate a booklet of activities for the teaching of reading and writing in students in the second year of Basic General Education (GBS) with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (TDAH). Methodologically, it was framed in a participatory action research with a qualitative approach where a diagnosis is made for subsequent planning and execution of the proposal. Thus, the subjects participating in this research were parents, classroom teachers, psychologists from the Department of Student Counseling (DECE) and students; who contributed significantly to the application of research techniques such as interviews, documentary analysis and anecdotal records, based on scripts of questions for subsequent analysis. It was concluded that the participants have a lack of knowledge about ADHD and a lack of training in didactics and methodology, as well as parents do not know the effective ways to support their children, resulting in an education with learning barriers. Therefore, it is important to design an activity booklet for the teaching of literacy that meets the educational needs for a quality, warm and inclusive education.  El presente artículo tiene como propósito indicar una cartilla de actividades para la enseñanza de la lectoescritura en estudiantes de segundo año de Educación General Básica (EGB) con Trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad (TDAH). Metodológicamente se enmarcó en una investigación acción – participativa con enfoque cualitativo donde se realiza un diagnóstico para posterior planificación y ejecución de la propuesta. De esta manera, los sujetos participantes en dicha investigación fueron padres de familia, docente de aula, psicólogo del Departamento de Consejería Estudiantil (DECE) y estudiantes; quienes aportaron significativamente a la aplicación de técnicas de investigación como entrevista, análisis documental y registro anecdótico, basado en guiones de preguntas para su posterior análisis. Se concluyó que los participantes tienen desconocimiento sobre el TDAH y escasez formación en didáctica y metodología, como también los padres de familia desconocen las formas eficaces de apoyar a sus hijos, dando como consecuencia una educación con barreras de aprendizaje. Por lo que, es importante diseñar una cartilla de actividades para la enseñanza de la lectoescritura que atienda a las necesidades educativas para una educación de calidad, calidez e inclusiva

    Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) in Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy (TPRK)

    To evaluate the usage of plasma rich in growth factor (PRGF) in transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TPRK) in low and moderate myopia, patients who underwent myopic and astigmatism TPRK with PRGF were involved in this retrospective, observational study. Subjects underwent a surgical procedure between February 2019 and June 2019. A three-month follow-up was recorded. Pain score was assessed with a visual analogue scale (0–10) and re-epithelialization time recorded. A total of 48 eyes from 24 patients were recruited. Mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was 20/20.31 (0.00 ± 0.02 LogMAR). A total of 98% of eyes did not change corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) lines. Two percent of eyes lost one line of CDVA. Preoperative spherical equivalent was −2.67 ± 1.37 D and after three months changed to −0.21 ± 0.34 D, and 2% of eyes changed 0.50 D or more between one and three months. Pain score was 3.29 ± 0.61 (3 to 6) score points at day one and 0.08 ± 0.27 score points at day seven. Finally, re-epithelialization time was 2.50 ± 1.20 days. PRGF addition to conventional refractive treatment such as TPRK seems to alleviate immediate postoperative pain and positively contribute to corneal re-epithelization time.publishersversionPeer reviewe

    Identification Of Actionable Genetic Targets In Primary Cardiac Sarcomas

    Background: Primary cardiac tumors are extremely rare; most are myxomas with a benign prognosis. However, primary sarcomas are highly aggressive and treatment options are limited. Radical surgery is often not feasible and conventional therapies provide only modest results. Due to the rare nature of primary cardiac tumors, there are no proper randomized studies to guide treatment. Their complexity requires alternative approaches in order to improve treatment efficacy. Methods: We isolated DNA from 5 primary cardiac sarcomas; the quality of DNA from 3 of them was sufficient to perform high-resolution single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array analysis. Results: In the present study, molecular karyotyping revealed numerous segmental chromosomal alterations and amplifications affecting actionable genes that may be involved in disease initiation and/or progression. These include chromosomal break flanking AKT2 in undifferentiated pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma, chromosomal break in promoter of TERT, and gain of CDK4 and amplification of MDM2 in inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. We detected segmental break flanking MOS in high-grade myxofibrosarcoma. In addition, the high number of chromosomal aberrations in high-grade myxofibrosarcoma may cause multiple tumor-specific epitopes, supporting the study of immunotherapy treatment in this type of aggressive tumor. Conclusion: Our results provide a genetic rationale that supports an alternative, personalized therapeutic management of primary cardiac sarcomas

    Evolutionary history of the SARS-CoV-2 Gamma variant of concern (P.1): a perfect storm

    Our goal was to describe in more detail the evolutionary history of Gamma and two derived lineages (P.1.1 and P.1.2), which are part of the arms race that SARS-CoV-2 wages with its host. A total of 4,977 sequences of the Gamma strain of SARS-CoV-2 from Brazil were analyzed. We detected 194 sites under positive selection in 12 genes/ORFs: Spike, N, M, E, ORF1a, ORF1b, ORF3, ORF6, ORF7a, ORF7b, ORF8, and ORF10. Some diagnostic sites for Gamma lacked a signature of positive selection in our study, but these were not fixed, apparently escaping the action of purifying selection. Our network analyses revealed branches leading to expanding haplotypes with sites under selection only detected when P.1.1 and P.1.2 were considered. The P.1.2 exclusive haplotype H_5 originated from a non-synonymous mutational step (H3509Y) in H_1 of ORF1a. The selected allele, 3509Y, represents an adaptive novelty involving ORF1a of P.1. Finally, we discuss how phenomena such as epistasis and antagonistic pleiotropy could limit the emergence of new alleles (and combinations thereof) in SARS-COV-2 lineages, maintaining infectivity in humans, while providing rapid response capabilities to face the arms race triggered by host immuneresponses

    Remote Substituent Effects on the Stereoselectivity and Organocatalytic Activity of Densely Substituted Unnatural Proline Esters in Aldol Reactions

    The organocatalytic activities of highly substituted proline esters obtained through asymmetric [3+2] cycloadditions of azomethine ylides derived from glycine iminoesters have been analyzed by 19F NMR and through kinetic isotope effects. Kinetic rate constants have been determined for unnatural proline esters incorporating different substituents. It has been found that exo-L and endo-L unnatural proline methyl esters yield opposite enantiomers in aldol reactions between cyclic ketones and aromatic aldehydes. The combined results reported in this study show subtle and remote effects that determine the organocatalytic behavior of these synthetic but readily available amino acid derivatives.
