    Search for pair-produced resonances decaying to jet pairs in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV

    Results are reported of a general search for pair production of heavy resonances decaying to pairs of hadronic jets in events with at least four jets. The study is based on up to 19.4 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. Limits are determined on the production of scalar top quarks (top squarks) in the framework of R-parity violating supersymmetry and on the production of color-octet vector bosons (colorons). First limits at the LHC are placed on top squark production for two scenarios. The first assumes decay to a bottom quark and a light-flavor quark and is excluded for masses between 200 and 385 GeV, and the second assumes decay to a pair of light-flavor quarks and is excluded for masses between 200 and 350 GeV at 95% confidence level. Previous limits on colorons decaying to light-flavor quarks are extended to exclude masses from 200 to 835 GeVWe congratulate our colleagues in the CERN accelerator departments for the excellent performance of the LHC and thank thetechnical and administrative staffs at CERN and at other CMS institutes for their contributions to the success of the CMS effort.     Mixed Protein Carriers for Modulating DNA Release

    Aqueous mixtures of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes undergo associative phase separation, resulting in coacervation, gelation, or precipitation. This phenomenon has been exploited in forming DNA gel particles by interfacial diffusion. We report here the formation of DNA gel particles by mixing solutions of double-stranded DNA with aqueous solutions containing two cationic proteins, lysozyme and protamine sulfate. The effect of the lysozyme/protamine ratio on the degree of DNA entrapment, surface morphology, swelling−deswelling behavior, and kinetics of DNA release has been investigated. By mixing the two proteins, we obtain particles that display higher loading efficiency and loading capacity values, in comparison to those obtained in single-protein systems. Examination of the release profiles has shown that in mixed protein particles, complex, dual-stage release kinetics is obtained. The overall release profile is dependent on the lysozyme/protamine ratio. The obtained profiles, or segments of them, are accuratelly fitted using the zero-order and first-order models, and the Weibull function. Fluorescence microscopy studies have suggested that the formation of these particles is associated with the conservation of the secondary structure of DNA.     This article analyses of one of the few titles by Gustavo Martín Garzo corresponding to the microfiction genre: Todas las madres del mundo (previously published as Pequeño manual de las madres del mundo). Critics have paid little attention to this book, probably because its author is identified with the writing of novels, genre to which its most celebrates titles belong. However, as we try to demonstrate in the following pages, Todas las madres del mundo addresses a recurring theme in all Martín Garzo’s work: motherhood. For doing so, the author uses a brief, nodal writing, in which the concept of ‘book’ does not work as a simple compilation of stories or an editorial convention, but rather constitutes a pattern of relational and topological reading. The result is a thematic cycle of short narrative pieces, similar to a catalog or a bestiary, which is an ideal option to deal with the complexity of motherhood from unusual points of view –sometimes weird or dark, but with a hue of humour.El artículo aborda el análisis de uno de los pocos títulos de Gustavo Martín Garzo correspondientes al género de la microficción: Todas las madres del mundo (previamente publicado como Pequeño manual de las madres del mundo). La crítica ha dedicado poca atención a este libro, probablemente porque se identifica a su autor con la escritura de novelas, género al que pertenecen sus títulos más celebrados. Sin embargo, como tratamos de demostrar en las siguientes páginas, Todas las madres del mundo aborda un tema recurrente en toda la obra de Martín Garzo, la maternidad. Para ello, el autor recurre a una escritura breve y nodal, donde la categoría de “libro” no funciona como una mera recopilación de relatos o una convención editorial, sino que constituye una forma de lectura topológica y relacional. Se conforma así un ciclo temático de piezas narrativas breves, similar a un catálogo o un bestiario, lo que resulta una opción idónea para abordar la complejidad de la experiencia de la maternidad abordada desde ángulos insólitos y a veces poco complacientes, pero no faltos de humor

    Minimal approach to neuro-inspired information processing

Despite the efforts, little is known on how we encode, maintain and retrieve information. One of the hypothesis assumes that transient states are generated in our intricate network of neurons when the brain is stimulated by a sensory input. Based on this idea, powerful computational schemes have been developed. These schemes, known as machine-learning techniques, include artificial neural networks, support vector machine and reservoir computing, among others. In this paper, we concentrate on the reservoir computing (RC) technique using delay-coupled systems. Unlike traditional RC, where the information is processed in large recurrent networks of interconnected artificial neurons, we choose a minimal design, implemented via a simple nonlinear dynamical system subject to a self-feedback loop with delay. This design is not intended to represent an actual brain circuit, but aims at finding the minimum ingredients that allow developing an efficient information processor. This simple scheme not only allows us to address fundamental questions but also permits simple hardware implementations. By reducing the neuro-inspired reservoir computing approach to its bare essentials, we find that nonlinear transient responses of the simple dynamical system enable the processing of information with excellent performance and at unprecedented speed. We specifically explore different hardware implementations and, by that, we learn about the role of nonlinearity, noise, system responses, connectivity structure, and the quality of projection onto the required high-dimensional state space.     Search for supersymmetry in electroweak production with photons and large missing transverse energy in pp collisions at √s=8TeV

    Artículo escrito por un elevado número de autores, solo se referencian el que aparece en primer lugar, el nombre del grupo de colaboración, si le hubiere, y los autores pertenecientes a la UAMResults are reported from a search for supersymmetry with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking in electroweak production. Final states with photons and large missing transverse energy ( ETmiss) were examined. The data sample was collected in pp collisions at √s=8TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to 7.4fb-1. The analysis focuses on scenarios in which the lightest neutralino has bino- or wino-like components, resulting in decays to photons and gravitinos, where the gravitinos escape undetected. The data were obtained using a specially designed trigger with dedicated low thresholds, providing good sensitivity to signatures with photons, ETmiss, and low hadronic energy. No excess of events over the standard model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted using the model of general gauge mediation. With the wino mass fixed at 10GeV above that of the bino, wino masses below 710GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.
