Towards a fantastic ecofictional? two readings of the monstrous plant in contemporary cinema

Como «productos del nuevo régimen de mediación de las tesis medio-ambientalistas» (Chelebourg, 2012),1 las «ecoficciones fantásticas» analizadas (Stranger Things y Annihilation) amplían nuestra visión de lo real, constituyendo una acertada crítica de la visión estrictamente mecanicista del mundo (Morton, 2019)Understanding along with Ponnau, Grivel, Mellier or Soldini, among others, the fantastic as «sentiment», and together with Belville (2013) the paradoxical, protean and mutable appearance of the monstrous as a figure inextricably linked to the stories of the strange and the narratives of the disturbing, I will start from two examples of monstrous inter-species hybridization to analyze what, in this way, contemporary fantastic cinema resorts to the vegetal as «between-two» or «interstitial monstrosity» (Veliz, 2021). This generic porosity reveals a new «sensitive relationship» to the world in which the viewer wonders «if what we believe in pure imagination could become true» (Roas, 2001: 32). As «products of the new regime of mediation of environmental theses» (Chelebourg, 2012), the «fantastic eco-fictions» analyzed (Stranger Things and Annihilation) broaden our vision of reality, constituting an accurate criticism of the strictly mechanistic vision of the world (Morton, 2019)

Imaginarios europeos.

In this study, I discuss the highly symbolic figure of Marianne, the fi'eedomfighter who appears on both sides of the Pyrenees. Thereby I analyse the 'female' from a complementary and interdisciplinary perspective to provide, thus, an insight into a world which appears more and more open and plural.

Written art... is, above all, a re-writing of art whose main objective is to focus on certain phenomena that, in the words of the editor, are "most responsible for the new notion of the artistic". Among them, the will to integrate the different means of artistic expression stands out, as well as the questioning of the hierarchy of the arts, which entails the acceptance and practice of the arts considered "minor". In short, the understanding of art as praxis, and of this vital praxis as a continuous battle against the institutionalization of art.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
This study has been totally funded by Consejeria de Salud, Junta de Andalucia (Fundacion Publica Andaluza Progreso y Salud, Proyecto AP-0105-2016). Funding has been received for data collection, analysis and interpretation of data and manuscript writing. Background: Nursing homes are likely to become increasingly important as end-of-life care facilities. Previous studies indicate that individuals residing in these facilities have a high prevalence of end-of-life symptoms and a significant need for palliative care. The aim of this study was to develop an end-of-life care program for nursing homes in Spain based on previous models yet adapted to the specific context and the needs of staff in nursing homes in the country. Methods: A descriptive study of a complex intervention procedure was developed. The study consisted of three phases. The first phase was a prospective study assessing self-efficacy in palliative care (using the SEPC scale) and attitudes towards end-of-life care (using the FATCOD-B scale) among nursing home staff before and after the completion of a basic palliative care training program. In the second phase, objectives were selected using the Delphi consensus technique, where nursing home and primary care professionals assessed the relevance, feasibility, and level of attainment of 42 quality standards. In phase 3, interventions were selected for these objectives through two focus group sessions involving nursing home, primary care, and palliative care professionals. Results: As a result of the training, an improvement in self-efficacy and attitudes towards end-of-life care was observed. In phase 2, 14 standards were selected and grouped into 5 objectives: to conduct a comprehensive assessment and develop a personalized care plan adapted to the palliative needs detected; to provide information in a clear and accessible way; to request and record advance care directives; to provide early care with respect to loss and grief; to refer patients to a specialized palliative care unit if appropriate, depending on the complexity of the palliative care required. Based on these objectives, the participants in the focus group sessions designed the 22 interventions that make up the program. Conclusions: The objectives and interventions of the NUHELP program constitute an end-of-life care program which can be implemented in nursing homes to improve the quality of end-of-life care in these facilities by modifying their clinical practice, organization, and relationship with the health system as well as serving as an example of an effective health intervention program.Consejeria de Salud, Junta de Andalucia (Fundacion Publica Andaluza Progreso y Salud) AP-0105-201

Hepatic and serum branched-chain fatty acid profile in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: A case–control study

    Get PDF
Objective Alterations in the hepatic lipidome are a crucial factor involved in the pathophysiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum and hepatic profile of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) in patients with different stages of NAFLD. Methods This was a case–control study performed in 27 patients without NAFLD, 49 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver, and 17 patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, defined by liver biopsies. Serum and hepatic levels of BCFAs were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The hepatic expression of genes involved in the endogenous synthesis of BCFAs was analyzed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results A significant increase in hepatic BCFAs was found in subjects with NAFLD compared with those without NAFLD; no differences were observed in serum BCFAs between study groups. Trimethyl BCFAs, iso-BCFAs, and anteiso-BCFAs were increased in subjects with NAFLD (either nonalcoholic fatty liver or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis) compared with those without NAFLD. Correlation analysis showed a relationship between hepatic BCFAs and the histopathological diagnosis of NAFLD, as well as other histological and biochemical parameters related to this disease. Gene expression analysis in liver showed that the mRNA levels of BCAT1, BCAT2, and BCKDHA were upregulated in patients with NAFLD. Conclusions These results suggest that the increased production of liver BCFAs might be related to NAFLD development and progression. This work was funded by the Institute of Health “Carlos III” (ISCIII) and cofunded by the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional-FEDER (grant number PI20/00505).
