A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Finance from the NOVA – School of Business and EconomicsThis study’s proposal is to examine for the Portuguese market, the value relevance of unrealized fair value gains and losses of financial assets, namely for financial instruments at fair value through profit and loss (which includes held-for-trading securities) and for available-for-sale financial assets. The objective is to obtain a perception of how well stock prices and returns reflect the fair value changes of these two financial assets. For a sample of Portuguese listed companies in a 2005-2007 period, no significant evidence is found regarding the value relevance of both cumulative and incremental unrealized fair value gains and losses associated to the two analyzed financial instruments. Several underlying factors for these results are presented, based on prior research

Objective: Evaluate the life quality in adolescents who have idiopathic scoliosis and use the vest, as well as check the effectiveness of this therapeutic. Methods: Twenty nine individuals of both genders, with a medium age of 14,55 ± 1,70 years, have been submitted to a SRS-22r questionnaire to evaluate the life quality of these adolescents. Results: The scoliosis caractheristics and the utilization time of the vest are similar in both genders. In the entire sample there could be seen some significative differences in the curvature angles since the use of the vest until the actual moment (p=0,006). The female patients refer more painful symptoms, comparing with the male gender (p=0,033). The initial and final degree of curvature compromise the adolescent function (r=0,424 and r=0,433 respectively), and the utilization time of the vest reduces their state of mental health (r=-0,412). The satisfaction of the adolescentes with the therapy depends on their self image (r=0,456) and the type of scoliosis they have (r=0485). Conclusion: The adolescent idiopathic scoliosis can generate changes in the quality of life of these individuals, and the use of the vest has beneficial effects on reduce the of the angle of Cobb of the scoliosis curvatures

Development of a high resolution position sensor for atomic force microscopy

Tese de mestrado integrado, Engenharia Física , 2022, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de CiênciasThis work aims to develop a position sensor with nanometric resolution and its implementation in a scanner that performs displacements in a three-dimensional space, responsible for the tip-sample scanning in an atomic force microscope (AFM). The work will be developed in the laboratory of “Atomic Force Microscopy and related techniques” (AFMaRT) under the guidance of professors Mario S Rodrigues and Miguel V Vitorino. ´ All AFMs use piezoelectric elements to perform displacements in 3 dimensions with high spatial resolution. Consequently, the observables of the instrument are the voltages applied to the various piezoelectric elements, later converted to displacement of the sample/tip, after calibrating the scanner movement. Due to hysteresis and creep characteristics of piezoelectric elements this conversion is only approximated and is insufficient for some applications that require greater precision in the knowledge of the sample position relative to the probe. After a previous study of the state of the art, it was decided to develop position sensors using lasers and quadrant photodetectors. Laser-photodetector systems are mainly sensitive to angular variations. To take advantage of this fact, the idea is to focus 3 lasers on 3 reflecting cylinders solidary with the sample. The angles of the surfaces on which the 3 beams lasers are incident, depend on the position of the cylinders with respect to fixed lasers in an inertial reference frame. This system was mounted on a prototype of AFM already existing in the laboratory, requiring the development/adaptation of the existing scanner to facilitate integration of the sensors, which included redrawing the scanner and the sample’s holder. During this work, it was necessary to dimension the optical system, design ways of coupling to the scanner, design electronic circuits that allow reading sensors and characterize and calibrate the sensors

Preliminary results of olive mil wastewater treatment by immobilized microalgae

    Get PDF
The olive mill wastewater (OMW) is the principal industry residue extraction of olive oil. Generally is characterized by very high organic load, due to high levels of phenolic compounds and sugars, and have minimum levels of nitrogen compounds and low pH. A variety of biological processes and microorganisms have been tested to treat OMW, including bacteria, yeasts and fungi, where the effectiveness in reducing the toxicity varies greatly. Taking this into account, the aim of this work is to assess the potential of microalgae in the decrease of phenolic compounds in OMW. For this purpose, the effect of immobilized Chlorella vulgaris in OMW biotreatments has been tested in batch cultures. The effectiveness of the process has also been assessed by phytotoxicity, in germination trials of Lactuca sativa. Biotreatments have been performed with OMW dilutions of 35%, 50% and 60%. Results showed that C. vulgaris has the ability to remove phenolic compounds, achieving a final Phenolic Loss Index (PLI) of 73%. Regarding the phytotoxicity after biotreatment we can conclude that microalgae can reduce the toxicity of olive mill wastewaters also having the ability to degrade the phenolic compounds that inhibit the germination and growth of Lactuca sativa. Furthermore, the algae biomass obtained in this process could be valorized in other applications
