Serum concentrations of Thymidine kinase 1 measured using a novel antibody-based assay in patients with Hodgkin Lymphoma
Background: Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) is an intracellular protein associated with DNA synthesis, expressed during the G1 phase and remained elevated through the M phase, with a potential as a biomarker for cell proliferation. In this study, we explore the possible use of TK1 in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL).Methods: Serum concentrations of TK1 (S-TK1) were measured in 46 newly diagnosed HL patients using prospectively collected biobanked serum samples. The samples were analyzed using a novel antibody-based TK1 immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results: The concentrations of S-TK1 were elevated in HL patients compared with healthy controls (median 0.32 mu g/L vs. 0.24 mu g/L, P = 0.003). A further increase in S-TK1 was observed during the treatment. The S-TK1 concentrations were higher in patients with advanced stage disease, low B-Hb, elevated P-LD and in those with B-symptoms. A high ESR correlated with low S-TK1.Conclusions: The study results suggest that S-TK1, measured using a novel antibody-based assay, has the potential to be a biomarker in HL. However, while S-TK1 levels are elevated at baseline compared with healthy controls, a limited number of patients and comparatively short follow-up time render reliable -conclusions difficult
Evaluation of Internal and Superficial Self-Healing of Cracks in Concrete with Crystalline Admixtures
Reinforced concrete structures are prone to cracking. The development of cementitious matrices with the capacity for self-healing soon after these cracks appear represents savings with inspections and repairs of the structures. Self-healing can be stimulated with the use of crystalline admixtures. Such materials easily react with water and increase the density of C-S-H (hydrated-calcium-silicate), forming insoluble deposits blocking existing pores and cracks. In this research, self-healing in concrete cracks was evaluated using three di erent crystalline admixtures, submitted to two and six wetting–drying cycles. The e ciency of self-healing was evaluated by optical microscopy and using the chloride di usion test, which allowed calculating the predicted useful life of the concretes. The results highlight two important findings: (i) in optical microscopy, crystalline admixtures were not e cient in promoting self-healing on the surface of cracks in any of the studied concretes; (ii) the passage of chlorides by di usion was lower for concretes with crystalline admixtures compared to the reference, showing better internal healing of these materials and, consequently, greater prediction of the concrete’s useful life

20 GHz instantaneous bandwidth RF spectrum analyzer with high time-resolution
International audienceWe report on the experimental demonstration of a multi-gigahertz bandwidth RF spectrum analyzer exhibiting a resolution below 20 MHz, based on spectral hole burning in a rare-earth ion-doped crystal. To be compatible with demanding real-time spectrum monitoring applications, our demonstrator is designed to reach a high time resolution. For this purpose, we implemented the so-called "rainbow" architecture in which the spectral components of the incoming signal are angularly separated by the crystal, and are then acquired with a pixelated photodetector. The Tm 3+ :YAG crystal is programmed with a semiconductor DFB laser which frequency scan is servo-controlled and synchronized with the angular scan of a resonant galvanometric mirror, while a high-speed camera is used to acquire the spectra. In the perspective of future implementation within a system, the crystal is cooled below 4 K with a closed-cycle cryostat. With this setup, we have been able to monitor and record the spectrum of complex microwave signals over an instantaneous bandwidth above 20 GHz, with a time resolution below 100 µs, 400 resolvable frequency components and a probability of intercept of 100 %

DETERMINAÇÃO DAS CARACTERÍSTICAS DE TOXICIDADE AMBIENTAL DO PERCOLADO DE UM ATERRO DE RESÍDUOS INDUSTRIAIS PERIGOSOS (ESTUDO DE CASO)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental toxicity of hazardous industrial waste from landfill leachate of the one industrial solid waste center from the Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The physical and chemical characteristics, as well as the ecotoxicity with Daphnia magna and toxicity and mutagenicity with Allium cepa were determined. The results of the row leachate sample indicated that the physical and chemical characteristics are compatible with the limit values imputed for treated wastewaters. Absence of acute ecotoxicity was also detected, however a significant (P<0.01) larger frequency of micronuclei was verified when compared with the results of the negative control, suggesting a genotóxico effect of this wast, although not significant alterations in the mitotic index and root growth was observed.
