    New glass coatings for high insulating greenhouses without light losses - energy saving crop production and economic potentials

    More than 90% of the Dutch greenhouse area is covered with single glass. Energy losses through the covering are high during the heating period (winter) but energy requirements are also high during the cooling period (summer) in the case of semi-closed greenhouses. Until now, light losses of insulating coverings prevented growers from using double glass or plastic film. However, increasing energy prices allow new developments. Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture studied the possibilities to use modern glass coatings to increase light transmission and save energy. Several glass types (standard glass, 90+ glass, low-iron glass) were covered with different anti-reflection coatings from different producers. Double glasses were produced; their optical properties were determined. It was possible to produce double glasses with new coatings having a higher light transmission than traditional single greenhouse glass (83-85% for hemispherical (diffuse) light, compared to 82-83% for traditional single glass) and a k-value of 3.6 W m-2 K-1 (compared to7.6 W m-2 K-1 of a traditional single glass). Other double glasses were produced using a combination of anti-reflection and modern low-emission coatings, reaching an even lower k-value of ˜2.4 W m-2 K-1, however, showing a slight light loss (78.5% for hemispherical (diffuse) light). Calculations of greenhouse climate (temperature, humidity, CO2) and energy consumptions year-round were carried out with a validated dynamic climate model. Additionally the effects on tomato production (dry matter) were calculated for the different prototypes of coated and insulated glass. Double materials show the highest energy saving with 25-33%, depending on the composition but also low-emission coatings on single glass decrease the energy use with 15-20%. Economic calculations with current tomato and energy prices showed that single and double glasses with anti-reflection coating currently have the highest potential

    Fabrication of Iron Aluminide Coatings (Fe3Al and FeAl3) on Steel Substrate by Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) Process

    Iron aluminides (Fe3Al and FeAl3) coatings were fabricated on a steel substrate by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) method. Raw materials, Fe and Al powders, were mixed at two different stoichiometry ratios (3:1 and 1:3). The mixtures and the substrate were placed in a furnace at 950 °C to ignite the SHS process. Coating phases were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The microstructure of the coatings was analyzed with optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results confirmed that it is possible to produce Fe3Al and FeAl3 coatings on steel substrate using SHS method. In addition, the results show that the coatings were composed of two different phases and their microstructures were non-porous and dense. Wear resistance of the coatings were higher than that of the substrate

    The effect of ADC resolution on concurrent, multiband, direct RF sampling receivers

    Connectivity using interband frequencies in 4G and 5G radio access networks, for example, carrier aggregation or dual-connectivity, incurs high receiver complexity and power consumption, in particular, when implemented using multiple radio units. Employing concurrent, multiband, direct RF sampling in a single radio chain architecture reduces the RF component count, leading to lower receiver complexity and power consumption. For this architecture, as the composite signal from multiple concurrent bands is digitized by a common analog-to-digital converter (ADC), the bit resolution critically affects system performance. In this paper, the effect of ADC resolution on the error vector magnitude (EVM) and Block Error Rate (BLER) performance of a concurrent, multiband, direct RF sampling receiver is investigated. Simulation and hardware measurement of a tri-band Long Term Evolution (LTE) system supporting three simultaneously active channels at 888 MHz, 1.92 GHz and 2.52 GHz is evaluated when reducing the ADC resolution from 8 to 3 bits. Interband interference measurements demonstrate that the multiband, direct RF sampling, wideband LTE receiver remains 3GPP compliant at 4-bit ADC resolution with the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) desensitization over a single-band receiver limited to 9 dB in the 888 MHz band

    Characterization of air velocities near greenhouse internal mobile screens using 3D sonic anemometry

    In Dutch greenhouses, different screen types are used for different purposes (shading, energy saving, black-out, light emission, etc.). In order to quantify the energy and mass transfers through screens, characterization of air permeability through the screens is required. In the case of energy-saving screens, it is an essential parameter to estimate the energy saving of each screen. Air permeability can be measured under defined conditions in a laboratory. In order to select the appropriate equipment for air velocity measurements, the air velocity vector near screens in a practical situation in a greenhouse needs to be identified by measurements. Sonic anemometry techniques have been used extensively in different types of greenhouses: a) to study natural ventilation, with and without insect screens, and in different positions; b) to study airflow patterns in greenhouses with mechanical ventilation/pad and fan systems; c) to study airflow patterns induced by different types of heating systems, and d) for the estimation of crop evapotranspiration (i.e., eddy covariance). However, to the best of our knowledge, no research has been carried out to study the airflow near different types of screens in a greenhouse. Many Dutch growers are increasingly using various types of fans with different positions in the greenhouse for dehumidification and improved climate uniformity purposes. The effect of such fans on the air velocity near screens, and therefore the effect on energy and mass transfer, is unknown. For this purpose, air velocities near different types of screens in commercial greenhouses were measured using ultrasonic 3D anemometers. The results show that, in the absence of fans, air velocity near the screens is affected by vent opening. With vents closed, air velocities are hardly ever above 0.2 m s-1. Therefore, a simple air-suction device can be used to characterize permeability of screens at a very low Reynolds range.</p

    Evaluation of central auditory processing of azeri-persian bilinguals using dichotic listening tasks in first and second languages

    Objectives Sometimes there is no hearing impairment, but it is possible to have an auditory disorder. This is known as a central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). Speech dichotic tasks are useful tools to evaluate CAPD, but there is almost no tool to assess this for Azeri people in their native language. The aim of this study was to evaluate central auditory processing of Azeri participants by Azeri dichotic digit test (ADDT). Materials & Methods Participants were 52 normal Iranian Azeri students (mean age 23.27± 4.71; 26 females, 26 males) in the Department of Audiology, School of Rehabilitation Sciences, Iran University of Medical Science, Tehran, Iran in 2016. They were chosen by convenient sampling. ADDT was constructed and administered in free recall conditions along with a Persian dichotic digit test (PDDT). After two to four weeks, reliability was performed. Results The mean of the right ear score of PDDT and ADDT was 98.90 and 99.09, respectively. ADDT was reliable in almost all scores. There was no significant difference in performance between men and women in any score of both tests (P>0.05). The results showed a significant difference between both ears� scores in PDDT (P<0.02) as well as in ADDT (P=0.00). The right ear advantage was seen in both tests. Conclusion All participants performed significantly better on digits presented in the right ear than the left ear in both tests.     A discriminant analysis model of psychosocial predictors of problematic internet use and cannabis use disorder in university students

    Researchers have found similarities and differences between behavioral and drug addictions. The present study was designed to explore which of a series of psychosocial predictors of addictive behaviors could differentiate problematic Internet use (PIU) and Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) in a sample of University students. A total of 144 participants (76 males, mean age = 23.03 years ± 2.83) were separated into three groups: those presenting with PIU (18 females, Mean age = 22.27 years), those presenting with CUD (22 female, Mean age = 22.73 years), and a control group (28 female, Mean age = 24.04 years). Participants completed the Internet Abusive Use Questionnaire (IAUQ), the Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11), the Multidimensional Distress Tolerance Scale (MDTS), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), and the Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire-10 (RTQ-10). The classification analysis results showed that 68.8% of the control group, 70.8% of the PIU group, and 81.3% of the CUD group were correctly classified in their respective groups. In addition, the results of the discriminant function analysis showed that there was a significant difference between members of the PIU and CUD groups in the degree of family support (0.45), significant other (0.33), tolerance of physical discomfort (0.30), reappraisal (0.42), and cognitive confidence (0.35). The findings provide evidence that specific psychosocial predictors can discriminate PIU from CUD. [Abstract copyright: © 2021 The Author(s).

    Protocol for measuring light transmission of horticultural screens

    The light transmission is an important property for horticultural screens. For energy screens in particular, an accurate measurement of the light transmission is important because these screens are often used during the day, in the winter period when radiation is limited. For shading screens the shading factor is an important factor. To enable a fair comparison between horticultural screens Wageningen UR in collaboration with screen producers Ludvig Svensson, Novavert and Bonar, developed a new protocol for measuring the transmission of horticultural screens. The protocol is based on the earlier developed protocol for measuring the light transmission of greenhouse covering materials, which was developed by TNO and Wageningen UR. The protocol covers the measurement of the transmission of horticultural screens for photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in terms of hemispherical transmission. The scope of the protocol is limited to transparent screens with hemisferical transmittance greater than 10% and does not include the measurement of blackout screens. The protocol is regarded as the standard by the parties involved. The transmission measured can serve as a basis for comparing horticultural screens and can be used in calculating the performance of greenhouses

    Single-cell delineation of lineage and genetic identity in the mouse brain

    During neurogenesis, mitotic progenitor cells lining the ventricles ofthe embryonic mouse brain undergo their final rounds of cell division, giving rise to a wide spectrum of postmitotic neurons and glia(1,2). The link between developmental lineage and cell-type diversity remains an open question. Here we used massively parallel tagging of progenitors to track clonal relationships and transcriptomic signatures during mouse forebrain development. We quantified clonal divergence and convergence across all major cell classes postnatally, and found diverse types of GABAergic neuron that share a common lineage. Divergence of GABAergic clones occurred during embryogenesis upon cell-cycle exit, suggesting that differentiation into subtypes is initiated as a lineage-dependent process at the progenitor cell level

    Prevalence of Cannabis Lifetime Use in Iranian High School and College Students: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analyses,and Meta-Regression

    Cannabis is the most widely used substance in the world. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of cannabis lifetime use (CLU) in high school and college students of Iran and also to determine factors related to changes in prevalence. A systematic review of literature on cannabis use in Iran was conducted according to MOOSE guideline. Domestic scientific databases, PubMed/Medline, ISI Web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar, relevant reference lists, and relevant journals were searched up to April, 2014. Prevalences were calculated using the variance stabilizing double arcsine transformation and confidence intervals (CIs) estimated using the Wilson method. Heterogeneity was assessed by Cochran's Q statistic and I-2 index and causes of heterogeneity were evaluated using meta-regression model. In electronic database search, 4,000 citations were retrieved, producing a total of 33 studies. CLU was reported with a random effects pooled prevalence of 4.0 (95 CI = 3.0 to 5.0). In subgroups of high school and college students, prevalences were 5.0 (95 CI = 3.0 to -7.0) and 2.0 (95 CI = 2.0 to -3.0), respectively. Meta-regression model indicated that prevalence is higher in college students (beta = 0.089, p < .001), male gender (beta = 0.017, p < .001), and is lower in studies with sampling versus census studies (beta = -0.096, p < .001). This study reported that prevalence of CLU in Iranian students are lower than industrialized countries. In addition, gender, level of education, and methods of sampling are highly associated with changes in the prevalence of CLU across provinces
