Rotary Friction Welding of Copper Rods by Utilizing Lathe Machine

    Get PDF
Due to unavailability of rotary friction welding machine in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, a study to use conventional lathe machine for rotary friction welding of copper rods is done. A setup of a conventional lathe machine with 7.5kW power of motor was used. Rotational speed was selected as 2000 rpm, since this speed was the maximum speed of the machine and can heat the copper rods to a high temperature. The characteristics of microstructure and microhardness in rotary friction welding of copper rods by utilizing conventional lathe machine were examined. The microstructure test showed processed copper rod had smaller grain size compared to unprocessed copper rod due to recrystallization and recovery of microstructure. The hardness of processed copper was lower than that of the unprocessed copper due to annealing effect. This conventional lathe machine failed to join the copper rods. The major problem was due to high amplitude of vibration because of length of the coppers themselves and length of tailstock quill, the part that connected to stationary chuck. However, all tests were able to heat the copper rods to high temperatures until red heat occurred. So, there is a possibility for this machine to perform rotary friction welding of copper rods

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Combustion: Challenges and Proposed Solutions

    Get PDF
Engine and car manufacturers are experiencing the demand concerning fuel efficiency and low emissions from both consumers and governments. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is an alternative combustion technology that is cleaner and more efficient than the other types of combustion. Although the thermal efficiency and emission of HCCI engine are greater in comparison with traditional engines, HCCI combustion has several main difficulties such as controlling of ignition timing, limited power output, and weak cold-start capability. In this study a literature review on HCCI engine has been performed and HCCI challenges and proposed solutions have been investigated from the point view of Ignition Timing that is the main problem of this engine. HCCI challenges are investigated by many IC engine researchers during the last decade, but practical solutions have not been presented for a fully HCCI engine. Some of the solutions are slow response time and some of them are technically difficult to implement. So it seems that fully HCCI engine needs more investigation to meet its mass-production and the future research and application should be considered as part of an effort to achieve low-temperature combustion in a wide range of operating conditions in an IC engine

    JAVA COASTAL COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT MODEL

    Get PDF
Abstract: Speaking of the northern coastal communities of Java (Pantura), the first thing that comes to mind is the fishing community. The fishing community has always been an interesting object to learn. This is because the condition of the fishing area is different from the natural resources (SDA) of the sea owned by the northern coast of Java. The fishing area is always synonymous with poverty and backwardness in the midst of abundant marine wealth. However, this hypothesis is not entirely true, because not all northern coastal areas of Java are in that condition. This is of course because each region has different policies and concerns from the government of the shelter, but the most important factor is the willingness and determination of the local people in the northern coast to empower themselves. Keywords: Empowerment, Communities, Coastal, Jav

ABSTRACT: Since the emergence of Islam in Indonesia, scholars’ enthusiasm in interpreting the Qur’ān in the Indonesian context had developed significantly and produced many books of interpretation. However, studies on Indonesian books of interpretation had not revealed the special characteristics of Indonesian interpreters’ thoughts on Tafsīr in relation to the dialectics of the Qur’ān and social, cultural, political, and historical context of interpretation. One of those works on Tafsīr is ‘Tafsīr al-Fātihah’ written by an exponent of al-Qur’ān and Tafseer and a charismatics scholar from Bumiayu, KH. Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith. He had emphasized many times in his preachings and teachings about some fundamental values included in Surah al-Fātihah. Some of those values had been interpreted by KH. Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith based on the Indonesian context at the time. Departing from this condition, the writer means to conduct this research in finding the answers of some questions as followings: (1) How is KH. Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith’s interpretation on Al-Fātihah? (2) How is contextualization in interpretation on Al-Fātihah conducted by KH. Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith? (3) How is the compatibility of KH. Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith’s interpretation with current context? This study used the content analysis method and hermeneutics-philosophy approach to reveal the ideas of KH. Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith in his book of interpretation and the influence of his social and historical context. The results of this study are: (1) Tafsīr al-Fātihah consists of three fundamental themes, are: wahdāniyatullāh (verse 1-4), ikrār bi’ibādatillāh (verse 5), and du’āul hidāyah (verse 6-7); (2) Contextual interpretation is found in 6th verse of Al-Fātihah that explained about du’āul hidāyah. Ideal-moral of this verse is ‘tolerance’ and has been interpreted as the prohibition of fanatism and enforcement to any other religion; (3) Contextual interpretation of KH. Abu Nur Jazuli Amaith found its relevance and urgency with the Indonesian context in this disruption era, in which diversity, difference, and importance are not found only in this real life, but also in virtual life

Population status, threats, and evolutionary conservation genetics of Bengal tigers in the Sundarbans of Bangladesh

The Sundarbans is a Tiger Conservation Landscape of global priority that supports one of the most important tiger populations across their current range. In Bangladesh, Sundarbans is the last stronghold of the critically endangered tiger, therefore conserving this flagship species will help to ensure the long-term future of the Sundarbans which has been providing significant economic and ecosystem services to human communities for centuries. However, scientific information is lacking on many aspects of the Sundarbans tigers, including population and genetic status, and detailed patterns of tiger and prey poaching. The objectives of this study were therefore to improve the knowledge base to help design better management strategies for long-term persistence of the Sundarbans tigers. As a consequence of challenges faced in applying conventional census methods in the Sundarbans mangrove habitat, a non-invasive genetic approach was applied to collect samples that were then screened using polymorphic microsatellite markers to estimate density and population size of tigers within the spatially explicit capture-recapture model. DNA analyses provided reasonable population estimates, indicating that a non-invasive genetic approach is a viable method for monitoring tigers and can be applied to monitor tiger populations elsewhere. Bayesian and Maximum likelihood inferences using mitochondrial DNA sequences supported a polyphyletic relationship between tiger population in the Sundarbans and the populations in central India. Together, microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA analyses revealed a signal of fine-scale genetic structure and significant genetic differentiation on a spatial scale which is probably the consequence of limited tiger dispersal due to the presence of wide rivers in the Sundarbans landscape. Systematic field survey across sample areas detected a range of snaring methods used to catch tiger prey and evidence of killing tigers by poisoning prey carcasses with the Carbofuran pesticide. Spatial analysis showed that poachers selected sites that tended to be further away from guard posts, and close to river banks. Based on these results, a range of future management interventions were recommended including the reduction of water-based commercial and resource collection activities to allow tiger dispersal, and regulation of Carbofuran and snare materials to better tackle tiger and prey poaching in the Sundarbans
