    Solid-liquid equilibria for the dimethyl ether plus carbon dioxide binary system

    A recently built experimental setup was employed for the estimation of the solid-liquid equilibria of alternative refrigerants systems. The behavior of dimethyl ether (DME) + carbon dioxide was measured down to temperatures of 131.6 K. To confirm the reliability of the apparatus, the triple point of the DME was measured. The triple point data measured revealed a good consistency with the literature. The results obtained for the mixtures were corrected by the Rossini method and interpreted by means of the Schröder equation. © 2010 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary

    Quantifying Volume Changing Perturbations in a Wave Chaotic System

    A sensor was developed to quantitatively measure perturbations which change the volume of a wave chaotic cavity while leaving its shape intact. The sensors work in the time domain by using either scattering fidelity of the transmitted signals or time reversal mirrors. The sensors were tested experimentally by inducing volume changing perturbations to a one cubic meter mixed chaotic and regular billiard system. Perturbations which caused a volume change that is as small as 54 parts in a million were quantitatively measured. These results were obtained by using electromagnetic waves with a wavelength of about 5cm, therefore, the sensor is sensitive to extreme sub-wavelength changes of the boundaries of a cavity. The experimental results were compared with Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation results, and good agreement was found. Furthermore, the sensor was tested using a frequency domain approach on a numerical model of the star graph, which is a representative wave chaotic system. These results open up interesting applications such as: monitoring the spatial uniformity of the temperature of a homogeneous cavity during heating up / cooling down procedures, verifying the uniform displacement of a fluid inside a wave chaotic cavity by another fluid, etc.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figure

    Performance of parallel FDTD method for shared- and distributed-memory architectures: Application tobioelectromagnetics

    This work provides an in-depth computational performance study of the parallel finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The parallelization is done at various levels including: shared- (OpenMP) and distributed- (MPI) memory paradigms and vectorization on three different architectures: Intel's Knights Landing, Skylake and ARM's Cavium ThunderX2. This study contributes to prove, in a systematic manner, the well-established claim within the Computational Electromagnetic community, that the main factor limiting FDTD performance, in realistic problems, is the memory bandwidth. Consequently a memory bandwidth threshold can be assessed depending on the problem size in order to attain optimal performance. Finally, the results of this study have been used to optimize the workload balancing of simulation of a bioelectromagnetic problem consisting in the exposure of a human model to a reverberation chamber-like environment

    Solid-liquid equilibria for nitrous oxide+ fluoromethane and triple point measurements for refrigerants

    To evaluate the Solid-Liquid Equilibria (SLE) of alternative refrigerants systems, an experimental set-up was employed. The behaviour of the nitrous oxide + fluoromethane (N2O + R41) binary system was measured down to temperatures of 126.5 K. The triple point temperature of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and of seven of the most widely applied alternative refrigerants, namely fluoromethane (R41), difluoromethane (R32), trifluoromethane (R23), pentafluoroethane (R125), 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R134a), 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (R143a) and 1,1-difluoroethane (R152a), were also measured. All triple point data measured revealed a generally good consistency with the literature. The results obtained for the mixtures were corrected by the Rossini method and interpreted by means of the Schröder equation. © 2012 Old City Publishing, Inc

    Alternative biofuels:PVTx measurements for DME + propane

    This study presents the experimental results for the dimethyl ether (DME) ? propane system obtained using the Burnett method. The apparatus was calibrated using helium. PVTx measurements were taken for four isotherms (344, 354, 364, and 375 K), performing 16 Burnett expansions in pressures ranging from about 3,000 to 70 kPa. The second and third virial coefficients were derived from experimental results. The experimental uncertainty in the second and third virial coefficients was estimated to be within ±5 cm 3/mol and ±1,000 cm6/mol2,respectively

    Race-free estimated glomerular filtration rate equation in kidney transplant recipients:development and validation study

    OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of a newly developed race-free kidney recipient specific glomerular filtration rate (GFR) equation with the three current main equations for measuring GFR in kidney transplant recipients.DESIGN: Development and validation study SETTING: 17 cohorts in Europe, the United States, and Australia (14 transplant centres, three clinical trials).PARTICIPANTS: 15 489 adults (3622 in development cohort (Necker, Saint Louis, and Toulouse hospitals, France), 11 867 in multiple external validation cohorts) who received kidney transplants between 1 January 2000 and 1 January 2021.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The main outcome measure was GFR, measured according to local practice. Performance of the GFR equations was assessed using P 30 (proportion of estimated GFR (eGFR) within 30% of measured GFR (mGFR)) and correct classification (agreement between eGFR and mGFR according to GFR stages). The race-free equation, based on creatinine level, age, and sex, was developed using additive and multiplicative linear regressions, and its performance was compared with the three current main GFR equations: Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation, Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) 2009 equation, and race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation. RESULTS: The study included 15 489 participants, with 50 464 mGFR and eGFR values. The mean GFR was 53.18 mL/min/1.73m 2 (SD 17.23) in the development cohort and 55.90 mL/min/1.73m 2 (19.69) in the external validation cohorts. Among the current GFR equations, the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation showed the lowest performance compared with the MDRD and CKD-EPI 2009 equations. When race was included in the kidney recipient specific GFR equation, performance did not increase. The race-free kidney recipient specific GFR equation showed significantly improved performance compared with the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation and performed well in the external validation cohorts (P 30 ranging from 73.0% to 91.3%). The race-free kidney recipient specific GFR equation performed well in several subpopulations of kidney transplant recipients stratified by race (P 30 73.0-91.3%), sex (72.7-91.4%), age (70.3-92.0%), body mass index (64.5-100%), donor type (58.5-92.9%), donor age (68.3-94.3%), treatment (78.5-85.2%), creatinine level (72.8-91.3%), GFR measurement method (73.0-91.3%), and timing of GFR measurement post-transplant (72.9-95.5%). An online application was developed that estimates GFR based on recipient's creatinine level, age, and sex (https://transplant-prediction-system.shinyapps.io/eGFR_equation_KTX/). CONCLUSION: A new race-free kidney recipient specific GFR equation was developed and validated using multiple, large, international cohorts of kidney transplant recipients.     PVT properties of an alternative biofuel: dimethyl ether

    Dimethyl ether is an important chemical material and it has many engineering applications. It is a clean and economical alternative fuel and an ozone-friendly refrigerant. In this work, its PVT properties have been object of study. In particular, the experimental work was performed both in the two-phase region and in the superheated vapor region phase by means of the isochoric method. The isochoric measurements were carried out at temperatures from 219 K to 363 K and at pressures from 22 kPa up to 1,740 kPa. A total of 159 points, both in the two phase (71 points) and in the superheated vapor region (88 points) were obtained. The present experimental PVT data contribute to the deeper knowledge of the behaviour of the fluid both in the superheated vapour and in the saturation pressure region and to the development of a new equation of state
